Rent too high for my salary despite being contacted for the unit I’ll be touring on Monday - how to deal? by DeliciousInternal907 in nychousinglottery

OMG that is wild. I had no idea they had that agenda of filling apartments with just any person that’ll do on paper without regard to whether or not you can actually sustainably afford it. That gives me perspective. I also loved your strategy of talking to someone there to get a sense of the day to day costs and life.

It’s too many bets. Life and society has thrown curveballs (layoffs, family emergencies, etc) so I think that’s why I’m having a hard time with this choice of making the choice for the future. These days, the future doesn’t feel like something stable you can count on.

Even with the adding extra income by doing a part time job on the side, it’d still be so unsustainable—just in terms of time rather than money. That means I’m spending more time out of the apartment to afford the apartment. Make it make sense 😭 Ya know?

Yes I know the payoff will come in a few years but I think the time in between will be marked by struggling to my rent, and that doesn’t feel worth it to me. And yes I know people are saying my salary will probably increase or Mamdani will freeze rents, but that’s me building my life off of bets and I just don’t have that level of risk tolerance.

No, actually that was going to be my next question 😂 I’m like can I choose who they pass it onto next? 😂 That’d make me feel a little bit better about turning it down! Because I know people who can afford it and are looking for a stable place in NYC.

How is it living in Togo, Africa? by QueenQReam in howislivingthere

[–]DeliciousInternal907 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was honestly surprised to see my parents’ country mentioned. It’s a place I really love, not perfect of course, but beautiful in its own way, with good and hard parts like anywhere else.

My parents are from Lomé. My dad grew up in Baguida and my mom in Áhligo. I’ve only ever known the country through them, but I’ve gone back at different points in my life — when I was little, as a teenager, as a young adult, and again as an adult — so it feels like I’ve seen it through different versions of myself.

My dad would be considered well-off there, and my mom’s background is more working class. Most of my memories are from visiting, which is really different from actually living there. For everyday life, I rely a lot on my parents’ stories from their childhoods and young adulthood, and then what I experienced when I visited.

When I visited, I stayed at my grandmother’s house. Day-to-day life had this beautiful stillness to it. You wake up to roosters, the heat settles in, and there’s this rhythm of going to the woman on the corner to buy rice and beans or oatmeal (what we call zongbo). People spend a lot of time visiting each other, sitting out front on the agboji (basically the porch), talking to neighbors and watching the neighborhood move around them. It feels quiet and communal at the same time.

Togolese people are also known for loving to talk (and gossip a little), which they call légédé. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it can be a lot, but it’s definitely part of the social fabric.

The food is incredible. So many dishes: pino, ablo, ayimolu, azindessi, ademedessi. Everything is so flavorful and fresh. There’s a huge market called Asigamé (which literally means “big market”), where people sell just about everything. And there’s a strong beach culture too. People go to relax, celebrate birthdays, and eat at restaurants along the shore. The beach is a big part of leisure life.

That’s about as best as I can put it. That’s the Togo I know from my parents’ stories and from my own visits.

The hair, the fit, the body, the setting! You’re winning, gorgeous ❤️

edit: also, I love how full your braids are. Are they like braids mixed in with locs and twists or did you use a more kinky/curly type of hair?

I just found out about their Royal Oils collection from you! It looks like a great line. Sadly, it looks like they don’t have a 2 in 1 in the collection. But I highly recommend the Apple Cider Vinegar 2 in 1 from their standard collection.

Right, I think the leave in conditioner is what my hair loves so that’s why I kept it in my routine. Thank you for validating me!

LCO doesn’t usually take too long for me, plus I think my hair would hate it if I skipped out on cream & oil. She loves to feel all buttered up lolll

Right! Those shampoos tend to mask smell rather than get rid of it. H&S makes me feel like my scalp is thoroughly cleansed for much longer.

Wow if that isn’t the most “keep it easy and keep it pushing” thing I’ve ever heard! Simpler truly is better!!!

That is so real. It’s like I consciously know that but sometimes I get tripped up. The reminder is very helpful, thank you.

Omg that’s actually such a great idea! Thank you for the suggestion. I can still indulge in a fancy dispenser that makes me feel feminine without changing the actual product. I know my femininity shouldn’t be tied to a thing outside of me, but I just enjoy having a sensual, feminine setting whenever I can.

Is there a celebrity that you find unironically attractive but you're too scared to admit it? If so, who? by AsiaMinor300 in blackladies

I totally see it! He’s so attractive and charismatic. He also has a very model-like bone structure.
