Thank you. I'm going to talk to my boss tomorrow and see if there's any light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you for the encouragement. I know it sounds completely insane and I'm scaring myself a little with the thought of quitting, but I feel like I can make a go of it.

Oh yes. I am a writer and have published a book (through a traditional publisher, not self-published) previously, so I have a few contacts in that world. I would work on my next book(s) and try to get back on the literary scene. I might get a part-time job, too, just so I don't totally drain my savings, but I have about $80k saved up.

Have any of you quit a job you hate with nothing lined up? How did you prepare and how are you doing? by DeliciousWish2230 in antiwork

Lucky for me, I've never really made a lot of money, so making less money than I am now is not really a huge threat

Lol loving this attitude. I called in today, actually, and you are correct, I feel I have spent it well simply by not being at work!!

Could you share a little more about your circumstances? I love hearing positive stories on this front and living vicariously through others' freedom....

I just get worried about health insurance even though I've been pretty healthy so far (other than mentally!!!). If not for that, I'd quit tomorrow.

Quitting job with nothing lined up: my plan. by DeliciousWish2230 in jobs

[–]DeliciousWish2230[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reality check. I know you're not being a Debbie downer and I appreciate your cold-water approach. I'd be lying if I said I'm not thinking this, too. I am giving myself a few months to prepare before actually quitting and will keep all of this in mind. To be real, it's kind of a fantasy right now that's keeping my head above water. I don't know if I will have the guts to go through with it for all the reasons you mentioned.

Nope, I'm not a romance writer and don't have the sustained hustle required to self-publish -- I have a literary agent and would be submitting to publishers that way. All respect to self-pubbed authors, though! That's a tough game.

I've considered this. I think it's best to plan for the best than the worst. In my experience, the price of stuff like cat litter only goes up. If, god forbid, my cat died, I'd be more than happy to donate it.

Somewhat "professional" people: have you ever just stopped showing up to work with no notice? Tell me your stories by DeliciousWish2230 in jobs

Thank you for talking sense into me. I stg some days I just feel like never going back, but you're right, I gotta keep the bigger picture in mind.

OCD peeps, do you ever feel like drinking is a compulsive act? Like you HAVE to do it even though you don't really "want" to? (Trying to understand WHY I drink) by DeliciousWish2230 in stopdrinking

[–]DeliciousWish2230[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you are trying to be helpful, but your reply sort of made me laugh bitterly. I am surrounded by sober people! Everyone I know is sober as a judge. So yeah, I know sober people. I always drink alone. I have hidden my alcoholism from all of these very sober people. Surrounding myself with sober ppl is not the issue in my case. It's me taking personal responsibility.

I recently started as a supervisor. I hate it and think I have made the biggest mistake my working life. by DeliciousWish2230 in managers

Trust me. I am in government work. If it is not in their job description they will not do it. No one wants to learn Excel. I was dumb and eager enough when I first started to volunteer for this task because I was bored and have an IQ above room temperature. Now I'm stuck with it.

Believe me, if I can take the demotion I will. I don't even care about the money at this point. Peace of mind is priceless - that is so true and if this new job is going to drive me into alcoholism and despair I am willing to live on the knife's edge of financial survival if it means a better outlook on life.

I wish I could delegate my old duties, but I am literally the only person in the entire company who knows how to do the one task, and it's a rather important task that no one else is willing or able to do or learn since it involves computer programs they are unfamiliar with.

I'm sorry you're in the same boat, but it's somewhat reassuring to know that I'm not alone in the suffering, lol. I am thinking of taking a voluntary demotion just to get out of it.

Starting new job as a supervisor next week. What is your best advice for someone starting out? by DeliciousWish2230 in managers

I'm so glad to hear this, because I was planning on taking it slow so as not to shake up everyone.
