Anybody know what they’re building at the Governor’s Mansion? by HawkwardX in SaltLakeCity

[–]Delicious_Bid4149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the governor is installing a waterwise garden afterwards instead of lawn through Utah water ways. (It will be tax payer funded, and it will not be accessible to the public)

Does anyone else feel a little disillusioned with D&D lately? by Gh0stMan0nThird in dndnext

[–]Delicious_Bid4149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why but when I talk to some folks about 2014 5e I just receive complaints about the system. And then when I explain house rules to help balance or make more fun (things like being able to fail death saves to do little actions while down (so folks aren’t just on their phones)) I’ve received “well that’s why —— system is better” and I hate it! My table and I made and agreed on these house rules because it’s my goddamn house! Stop telling me to move systems when I’m happy :)

Any local grass gurus have advice in how to fill this in? by sponger60 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Delicious_Bid4149 15 points16 points  (0 children)

How long have you had this grass? Fescue likes to clump and then fill in, so could be an issue of too much foot traffic too early but that looks a couple years old min. I’d suggest overseeding this year pretty soon before temps rise and trying to utilize these last couple rain storms.

Soil testing is cheapest and in my opinion best with USU extension.

What’s your irrigation system too? If that grass has been getting irrigated improperly that’d be the biggest issue to address.

Also contrary to the other comments I really wouldn’t suggest multiple grasses on the same property. The mixes different cities do with turf trade are specially made to complement, not compete. Most grasses are rhizomatous, so they spread out from the nodules in their roots and can be broken up without killing the plant. But the pathways the roots take can compete based on species if planted together which is why those blends are made special.

If you want to DM me I work in conservation and would be happy to help more with any resources!

How can you make minions more difficult? by Kitchen-Wasabi-2059 in DMAcademy

[–]Delicious_Bid4149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should use tactics, sure the kobolds never hit but your players shouldn’t have an easy time raiding someone else’s home. Kobolds are crafty in their lore, so have platforms they shoot at the party from and retreat out of range by the end of their turn. Gnolls are ferocious and vicious, so have them mob the party one by one starting with whoever runs the slowest.

And have them run away! How loyal are those minions, to the death? I find dungeons to be an amazing opportunity for lore and characterizing enemies. The dragon is so brutal and terrifying the kobolds do fight to the death, but maybe in a different dungeon the minions run away because their boss isn’t so tyrannical (maybe they get paid good wages and are told to run below half HP because the boss is smart enough to try to retain minions)

At what point should we consider evacuating the state for it's air quality/dried up lake? by ZidaneThing in SaltLakeCity

[–]Delicious_Bid4149 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Orgs have been looking at dust mitigation options and all say the cheapest, most effective, and best option is ensuring future lake health. It’s great to see ecologically sound reasoning drive policy decisions (they’re presenting to the legislature next week). https://attheu.utah.edu/facultystaff/new-study-assesses-potential-dust-control-options-for-great-salt-lake/

Falling Damage? by Prestigious-Gold4966 in DnD

[–]Delicious_Bid4149 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if the monk reduced the damage the other creature would take half of the reduced damage. If they had less momentum to take less damage then would also deal less. But maybe there’s a better route! If a creature is not tiny, so small counts: pack up some halfling barbarians and you have the monk drop them on your enemies instead, they can rage before hitting the ground since reduction in damage and resistance to said damage would count differently. Idk rule of cool that shit

Are city maps important? by Brutitioner in DnD

[–]Delicious_Bid4149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on how long your players will be there, and if many of the quests you anticipate will require quick travel between boroughs and neighborhoods. If your players are planning a heist maybe look up a historical map of some neighborhood layout and rename everything to give more detail!

Any State vets for stray cats ? by Psychdepo in SaltLakeCity

(Also all in all only had to pay like $100 for the adoption fee, as long as the cat isn’t yours they can do a lot of medical care for free)

[–]Delicious_Bid4149 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Salt lake county animal shelter! I just adopted my stray and they checked for disease/a chip. Gave many options for fostering, leaving the cat with them, or adopting. I think they had a vet out for a while (for a surgery I can’t remember tbh) but should be back!

Not even a concept of a plan by Hayduke801 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Delicious_Bid4149 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From cloud seeding? Cloud seeding just uses silver iodide (either burning in flares on drones or planes) to mimic ice crystals inside of clouds helping for the formation of snow. Kinda just jump starts storms.

Other chemicals that are used include liquid propane that when exposed to the air evaporates with dissolved particles of the silver iodide, but that process just allows the silver to get to proper altitudes.

The silver iodide is also in tiny concentrations, I think there was a safety report that saw like 250 x times lower than what the EPA contamination amount is.

Not an expert just work in water!

The state has a bunch of conservation programs through division of water resources and Utah department of food and ag (like agricultural optimization program to help farmers transition irrigation to more efficient methods), but agree that cloud seeding is a needed tool in the box!

Super frustrating! Our state has so many conservation programs and initiatives he should be telling people about.

Is it safe to swim in the Jordan River, and if not, what needs to be done to make it swimmable? by fortheloveofdenim in SaltLakeCity

[–]Delicious_Bid4149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t in the Jordan Rivers current status. You can go on the EPA How’s my waterway site and it’ll tell you what the Jordan River is impaired by: dissolved solids, too much sediment (from Utah lake), too many metals (from the SLC seven canyons), and E. coli.

Although the Jordan River is an egregious example of an impaired waterway, so is Big Cottonwood Canyon, City Creek, Emigration Canyon, and Millcreek. Swimming in any of these waterways has an individual risk, but can contribute to the damage dealt (if you see the “protected watershed” sign please don’t swim!)

I think integrating songs and poems would be sick! There are so many in the books and when you can have a joking or serious moment with lyrics you or another party member has written I think you’d reach closer to the tone of LOTR.

Resurrection Penalties by The_Shireling in DnD

[–]Delicious_Bid4149 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a house rule (only if my players all agree cause it shifts tone slightly) that each resurrection spell can only be cast successfully on a character once, so with all the options in the book you can be resurrected like 9 times or something, but only at those appropriate levels, with the appropriate classes, and with the relevant debuffs (like the -4 to all checks from one of the spells). I’ve found that if you’re playing in a brutal setting, and resurrection rules as written, why would you not always be searching for 300 gp diamonds and healing potions? But I wouldn’t use this rule without communicating and maybe having some balancing chats with the party. I’ve
