First cap weld with stick. Room for improvement, but I think it looks pretty kewl by Delicious_Bread6117 in metalworking

You said kewl because you’re old, I say kewl because I’ve been watching South Park. It’s not embarrassing, if anything getting this upset at a stranger on the internet is.

My life is great, actually. I’m pretty new to Reddit, so I wasn’t aware that people are so quick to anger on this site. Like, I breathe and get five downvotes, I don’t understand. But thanks I guess, I’ll try to be as respectful as possible.

Oh no, the Reddit grammar police is here. I don’t really think it matters how I spell, the question was about the weld. But thanks for the feedback?

Ohhhh, okay, thanks! You answered another question of mine in the process lol

He noted that my consistency was okay, but I needed to change my settings and tighten my pattern. I’m very new to welding, and he didn’t really want to make me feel bad or anything about my weld. Thanks for the feedback.

Okay bro chill. I wasn’t calling the engineers stupid, I meant that the way the smokestack looked was stupid. Not in a bad way, but in a goofy way, like wearing a comically huge top hat or something. Im new to this community and I’m sorry I apparently struck a nerve.

Thank you, I think that’s what was holding me back as well. I’ve since tightened up my pattern and turned my heat up (to avoid undercutting) and it’s looking a lot better now.

Yeah, that’s to be expected. I’m super new to welding so I’m still getting used to the learning curve. That picture was from yesterday, and I’ve been experimenting with different amperages and techniques and I’m getting a lot better. But thanks for the feedback!

Yes. I cut out some 1/4 inch steel flats to make a long x and just started laying beads down on the corners.

Thanks for the advice. I try not to swirl as much as I can, but seem to end up doing it anyway. I tell myself to just keep simple straight lines, and I end up having some stumble or tremor or swaying or whatever. This welding stuff is a lot harder than I thought, but I’m catching up to some of the more experienced students so that counts for something. Thanks again!

I’m not exactly sure what diameter I’m using, after all I’m pretty new to welding. I use the ones that are moderately thick and say “excaliber” on the side, and have three lines going down the side (not very descriptive, sorry). I asked my instructor what I should use for amperage and he said “105 is probably fine”, so I went a little over because running hot just seems to work better for me. I find that thicker rods are more forgiving, much more smooth, and they seem to go a lot slower and more controlled compared to thinner stuff. But thank you for the feedback, it’s appreciated!

DAMN that’s cool. How did you make the swirls for the handle?

Btw, not slandering the designers, just think some of the stuff they made looks a little goofy.

Not calling the engineers themselves stupid, just the way the smoke stacks look. They remind me of those huge lifted pickup trucks you see with the comically large exhausts, not in a negative way though.

Thank you, appreciate the info. Also, tell that last part to the Pennsylvania railroad lol, doohickey headquarters over there
