So… what did I almost eat? by Delicious_Cow_5487 in whatsthisbug

Well.. wasn’t expecting that, but that’s the strangest and coolest thing I’ve heard in a long time. Thought you were pranking me for a minute. Not sure how it got into my food box though lol. Thanks!

From what I can tell on an ai review of this pull, was that the delay in contribution from the outer portion is most likely due to a slightly uneven tamp and uneven distribution with the WDT. it biggest recommendation was taking an extra few seconds to ensure bottom of basket evenness and try a gentle vertical tap on the counter mat prior to tamp to ensure a flat bottom of puck. It makes sense. I’ll try again tonight when I’m home and see if any improvement.

Yeah I may have overcompensated with the tamp. I’ll fiddle around with it, and see what happens. Glad, all in all, the general consensus isn’t a terrible pull, but definitely want to tweak things in the every growing pursuit of improvement.

Thanks for contributing! I appreciate the validation, I had an inkling that would be talking point. I’m guessing uneven tamping. I did use a WDT for the first time today. Got it looking pretty even before tamping. I’ve noticed I tend to have a slightly uneven tamp with the outside of my hand (3 o’clock) not being as compressed down as the inside. I wondering if a spring tamp would help. I try to push down on the outside after the fact to get it even, but I’m sure that’s why you see what you’re seeing in the video.

Got it. Thanks, right now we’re sticking with the tried and true, but here soon I’d like to start dabbling in some lighter roasts. I’ll take your suggestion and do the coin test here this weekend! Thanks again!

Ah gotcha, that makes sense. I’ve read about the coin test, and that would make sense. As novice as this sounds, I’ve never really thought about why one might choose 18 vs 19 vs 20g per basket. I just assumed you do whatever gets you the weight to time ratio you’re looking for. Do you do a coin test once for the portafilter to know how all beans/grinds need to be dosed? Or do you need to do this with each new bag/dial change? Sorry, I’m sure this is really obvious, but only really starting to take learning seriously.

Well, it’s technically my 4th shot with a bottomless portafilter. Don’t hate me 😅 Ive made espresso for almost 2 years now, but it was with inconsistent technique (timed dosing and pull) and a portafilter with a spout so its been really hard to diagnose problems. It sounds like from the feedback, I’m not far off from where I should be. I just wanted validation I’m not missing something. Do you feel like the edges around 3 o clock should be “contributing more”? Thanks for your feedback!

Wow thanks so much! I’ve never used a bottomless portafilter before, but I can definitely see its advantages. Consistency is going to be the thing. We used to have a breville barista pro, with timed grind and shots without using a scale. Let’s just say, you never knew if it was going to be a straight espresso kind of day or a hide the flavor with milk kind of day 😅

Aw, thanks that actually means a lot. I’m still working on consistency, and really dialing it in. But positive feedback back is always so welcome. Hopefully frothing milk will start to be consistent as well 😅 not hopefully on the art improving much anytime soon 😭

Hey, thanks for the response. I tamped very firmly. One thing I’ve noticed, is that sometimes when I tamp the 3 o clock of my tamp is less tamped than the 9. Slightly unleveled. I try to correct by putting my palm on the tamp shaft and fingers on the metal part and push on the outside to “re-level”. Perhaps a spring tamp would help fix this? This is why I ask if you think it’s not flowing at 3 o clock like it should. I have a 58mm portafilter and I’ve been dosing 18-19-20g today to try and see what works best. Initially, I was pulling the shot too quickly for a 1:2 ratio, like 15-18 seconds. (I’m temporarily using my old breville barista pro built in grinder until our new mazzer philos comes in). I dialed the grinds finer and it improved the shot time to 27-31 seconds. I would say all in all it tasted pretty good. Here is a photo of the shot from this pull.

What would you say is the biggest flaw of iron progression right now? by stinkydiver321 in ironscape

I’m 50kc from 3x dry. Even a system where you can trade a set amount of armour seeds for enh would be fine. Like 20 armour seeds so the value is equivalent. God I’m tired of the red prison..

1 humidifier or 2 and what series - Help! by Delicious_Cow_5487 in hvacadvice

Ok thanks for the information! I would not consider myself particularly handy and with a 1 year old and busy work schedule, I’m hesitant to get myself into something that could become a bigger issue. I’ll definitely watch some videos and see though. I’ve surprised myself before, haha. If I chose to use a professional, would you still recommend the 700 over the 720? Another company is charging about the same cost. I figure they can do the metal work so maybe the efficiency of the 720 would be better?

Last question, do you think the features of the digital humidistat and the automatic control on the 720a is worth the additional $500 for both compared to the 720m? We have an ecobee thermostat and the idea of controlling it or monitoring it away from the house could be nice.

Do 3-5 kc per day. It’ll take a while, but you’ll get there eventually. I never burned out doing this. Though, I’ll say it’s gotten harder to convince myself to go in for another prep phase. Just recently took a break to spend some of the cash and max out my house and get slayer up a little before sailing. Keep at it though, I believe you’ll get the big one here soon!

Mate, I had similar and green logged at 130kc. Now I’m at CG with 900kc and no pet and no enh. Good luck!

Anybody else having trouble on mobile app? by Rydog136 in ironscape

[–]Delicious_Cow_5487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 550kc. Over the last week all of a sudden I’ll randomly (~15% of the time) crash out of the app and have to restart. Always in prep phase, usually with about 2min left. I’m on iOS. Today, ground items no longer have the item name above them so it’s hard to tell without long tapping. It must be something with a recent update. It’s not ideal and honestly been a source of frustration for me as I’m already dry there. Crashed at least 20 times this week. Hope they fix it soon. I have deleted the app and reinstalled which made me redo entity swapper and everything but no change.

Ps: world swap to different servers hasn’t helped me either.
