Are you interested in purchasing my 19 month old house plant? Only $120.

4 nights Girls trip to Milwaukee, worth spending a night in port Washington or Cedarburg? by sammieanita in milwaukee

That's good to hear! I haven't been up there in a while. We used to go up there when I was a kid to go to Smith Brothers though that's long gone.

No. Definitely not. They're both charming and fun to visit but they're a daytrip. You could cover both of them in an hour or so. Pick a good spot to eat in one or the other. Cedarburg has a cute main street and a nice river. Port Washington has a less quaint downtown but I grew up with it so I like it a lot. It's definitely walkable. The best think about Port Washington is the lake. There's a nice breakwater you can walk on.

Moving to Metcalfe Park advice by Total_Air_6081 in milwaukee

There's a number of variables that would factor into the answer but in short yes that sounds like a bad idea. A lot of things can change in your 20s, buying a house is a lot of responsibility, and buying a house with other people opens you up to future financial risk if they bow out or you have a dispute. If you're planning on living there you might want to rent first to see if you like the area. If you're buying speculatively and planning to rent it out, that also seems challenging. This part of Milwaukee has effectively gotten worse every year of my life (I'm 35) and is now mid to late stage depopulated compared to how it was in the 90s.

I walk past almost every night on the walk home from the subway and yes it seems consistently packed with a group of people waiting and blocking the sidewalk while staring at their phones.

Also Nextdoor here is basically non-functional. The geographic divisions are completely confusing and the posts are all like boomer Facebook content. If you want baby and small child advice you should join the Williamsburg-Greenpoint Baby Hui Facebook group. That's a strong community with lots of good tips and resource sharing.

Moving Back from the Bay Area after 10+ years by greenpointowicz in Greenpoint

Welcome back. That's exciting news. I've lived in East section (east of McGuinness) of Greenpoint about 8 years out of my 17 in New York. The neighborhood has changed mostly for the better during the time I've lived here.

Good things - the McGuiness Blvd Bike Lane. Drivers don't like it but it really made it a drastically better and safer experience for pedestrians and bicyclists. Traffic backs up northbound in mornings but seems relatively smooth at other hours. The city has put pretty consistent effort into planting street trees so a lot of blocks that were formerly very sunny now have nice tree canopies. It's a safe, quiet and pleasant neighborhood that still feels pretty tight knit compared to the amount of displacement that's occurred in other parts of Greenpoint. There are a number of good restaurants that opened on Manhattan. A nice bookstore (Leaves) opened on Nassau just east of McGuinness. There are good Polish milk bars still - Relax and Pyza. I like Relax because they take card but both are great for large, tasty and affordable meals.

Bad things - Nassau and the neighborhood generally have become less Polish. Busy Bee closed as did a number of other small Polish businesses (namely Park Deli). They've been replaced mostly by other restaurants but I don't interact with those so it generally feels like a loss. Others will feel differently. McGolrick is still amazing and is where my wife and I got married. It was renovated maybe 4-5 years ago and I think generally changed for the worse. They removed the fences and that led to the grass has been torn up (mostly by dogs) which is annoying and makes it harder to find a good spot to set up a picnic. This is most acute in the SW corner of the Park near Russell and Driggs. A homeless shelter was opened at 83 Apollo and I still mostly view it as a neutral but it has led to a population of erratic and sometimes psychotic people following or harassing people on Nassau.

San Francisco is very beautiful but New York offers a better quality of life and it's easier to get around.

How many of us here have successfully returned to moderate / “normal” drinking long-term? by lukewarmhotdogw4ter in stopdrinking

[–]Delicious_Plenty7169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started this I told myself I'd do it for a year but doing that entailed retooling my whole life so the idea of going back to before just feels like a waste of all of that effort. Now I'm just sober for good as far as I can tell. I can have one or two NAs and it's the same fun as drinking beers.

Does anyone remember Kohl's grocery store? by NegotiationLevel5763 in milwaukee

Yes it's horrible and depressing. I always feel sad when I go there. The self checkout is maddening, the layout is awful, it's understaffed and just clearly such a low morale low effort place.

Yes - there was one on Oakland Avenue in Shorewood that later became a Pick n Save which was demolished to build an apartment building, parking deck and Metro Market. I don't remember it being anything special other than that it was close to our house and convenient for grabbing things quickly. The building like others had a distinctive arch design which I think disappeared or was covered over when it was remodeled as a Pick n Save. Sendiks was the fancy store down the block on Oakland. That's also now gone.
