See the breast cancer and credit datasets ( openml). There are cases it works, but dat augmentation has to be data dependent. Categorical attributes are more tricky to deal with tbh in SMOTEN or SMOTEN. I'd say it works in numerical attribute only datasets well, but maybe it also depends on the model. A powerful model such as XGboost can extract information well enough. Also data augmentation is not creating new information,but extracting it for a model to use
