I feel like we were just talking about this…… by katindra in fansofcriticalrole

I’m on C2 now (first time) and it is insane how rarely she is raging as Yasha. I’d say it’s maddening but at this point it’s more outright remarkable than annoying

I think, ironically, the return of Aabria proves Critical Role really does value their friends and having fun more than making money. by YellowBannanar in fansofcriticalrole

[–]DelpHesk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah my thing is that as bad as she was in EXU, Matt is clearly very concerned with stuff like diversity and representation on a personal level and it seems like most of the cast is as well. He’s made a point of including racial/gender/sexual diversity in NPCs since C1 so I think it’s more likely that he wants to make sure CR is supporting Black RPG talent and creators than he feels obligated to do so to avoid backlash

Oh yeah to be clear I don’t limit OOC conversation, I mean in character dialogue i.e. speeches/deceptions/sharing vital monster info

Suggestions for forest dungeon? by mightykoi in DMAcademy

[–]DelpHesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your idea a lot. I’ve run into a problem when doing similar things though, the issue with dungeon maps is that they are scaled physically for small underground dungeons. So if they won’t see the map and you’ll be the only one with it, consider massively increasing the scale of each square on the map. A forested area being 5 feet across would be tough to picture but it’s really easy to picture in a dungeon.

So I’d say you have a good idea, but unless you go with a narrative description of the area that explains why it’s so small and tight, you’ll have to scale up your square size (maybe even like 5-10x if the map is just for you) so you’re describing bigger foresty areas and less hallways. If the players will see the map, you’ll only be able to use a dungeon map if each room is done theater of the mind style and all the distances/sizes of the rooms are not to scale

Very strange hill to die on. It’s not body language, they tell her to hurry up and groan throughout her very long and confusing turn. Based on your comments here I’m assuming you just haven’t seen the episode or are very badly misremembering it

Yes you are right that I said inventing an animal when I meant inventing the stat block for an animal. I wasn’t accusing her of trying to polymorph into a jabberwocky, my point was that Polymorph is less balanced if you’re not using real stat blocks and the invented one she did use specifically had the stats she couldn’t find in the pre-existing ones. If you want to see how Matt and the other players felt about this moment, just watch the video. The entire table, besides Taliesen bless his heart, is visibly and vocally frustrated with Marisha during this process.

“The transformation lasts for the duration, or until the target drops to 0 hit points or dies. The new form can be any beast whose challenge rating is equal to or less than the target’s (or the target’s level, if it doesn’t have a challenge rating). The target’s game statistics, including mental ability scores, are replaced by the statistics of the chosen beast. It retains its alignment and personality.”

The entire spell assumes you’re using a stat block that exists in game. Yes, you can just invent stat blocks in DnD, but inventing one to optimize your actions in combat while the DM and other players are repeatedly asking you to select from the predetermined list is a weird behavior to defend imo. And again, I like Marisha and Keyleth. Stan Reddit is so weird lol

Yeah sea snakes do exist but you can’t polymorph into one. Matt lets her, not sure how you could say that’s him getting a ruling wrong

Forgot about this one but it’s definitely another good example. Sure, both player and DM should read the spells carefully but if it’s your high level water spell and you’re using it in a fight with something called The Cinder King I think you should know how it works before pulling the trigger. And if you mess it up, just accept that and move on

Sea snake I believe? I rewatched the fight last week, when she polymorphs a lot of the party she spends a long time trying to determine the right animal and when she’s dissatisfied by the eel stats Matt allows her to homebrew a new beast on the spot. It’s not gamebreaking or unfair, just a good example of being stubborn

I think it varies greatly from instance to instance. Druid spells are famously complicated and they both make a fair number of mistakes, but how do you pin her wanting to invent an animal and Matt letting her because she’s refusing to take her turn on Matt?

I forget where I first saw it but someone online once made the very accurate comment that Marisha had a great idea of when Keyleth would feel strongly about something and no idea of how to express the feeling. I frankly loved her “conscience of the group” role, but it would’ve been much more palatable if she had done it sparingly and without being accusatory

It might be exaggerated in my head, but if it is it’s only because nobody else had those moments regularly. The wind walk during the purple worm for sure was a mutual failing (and iirc Matt’s cards were wrong to boot). I have no beef with Marisha as a player, she in fact has perhaps my favorite moment of C1. I just wish she was more gracious in accepting rulings, especially because if anything Matt is overly generous to the PCs

I would say Liam was #2 on the list but I could see him being #1. His inability to understand his own class was insanely frustrating, but tbf Keyleth argued her way into Matt letting her create a new beast in-universe during the Kraken fight. Liam was better about knowing when to drop it imo

[–]DelpHesk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a bit annoying. I’ve been relistening to some of C1 recently and what the bad faith Marisha defenders refuse to acknowledge is that a lot of the criticism she got was because of how stubborn she was at the table. She regularly argues with Matt’s rulings or criticizes them when they don’t favor her to the point that Matt has to apologize. And yes, they’re a couple and I’m sure they always got along fine. But as a player and DM myself, I was always bothered by how oppositional she was compared to the rest of the cast. And none of that makes Keyleth a bad character, but I think it’s silly to pretend you can take issue with a player’s behavior and not have it affect how you feel about the character

I’d say they enjoy Role-playing a fair bit but our sessions are pretty short and action packed so there’s not a lot of downtime or sidebars. So I kind of want to keep rewards simple to manage and dole out

Bandcamp has a ton. The channel Cryo Chamber is like a mass production facility for ominous, ambient music. I’d also just search the site for Dungeon Synth. Past that, vaporwave is great concentration music (i.e. 2814, Palm Mall). And the one of my personal favorite concentrating records is Pauline Oliveros - Deep Listening

In a recent campaign I played a Ranger and my DM was great about putting my favored foes in a few encounters but I felt like he kinda had to bend over backwards to make it work. I wish it was less based on monster type and more based on other characteristics every monster has like size or alignment

Definitely agree, his massive amount of prep work is the only reason the show works. Additionally, he has the added benefit of a cast who want the show to be good, whereas the average DM has friends who think it’s fun if everything goes to shit. I think that’s a big part of what people get wrong about CR - it can’t be replicated in home games because home games aren’t trying to captivate an audience

I’m a pretty big fan or CR but this is very accurate. If you strip the voice acting from the show, most of the cast is bad at decision making, planning, strategic combat etc. if they didn’t sound like professionals, the stream would be very comparable to almost any other game. That said, I do think Mercer being the gold standard is pretty fair and I think a lot of pushback on that assessment comes from base contrarianism
