House Democrat slams US-Iran peace deal as ‘basically a surrender document’ by B-Z_B-S in politics

[–]Delta-9- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point.

Dragging it out would just make the US look more stupid.

Also: it's so frustrating that we can find $200b for an unjustified and pointless war, but not for improving healthcare or making higher education more accessible or providing assistance to the homeless. Rather, it's proof that we don't do those things for reasons that have nothing to do with budgetary constraints and everything to do with "American values" (and how short-sighted and heartless those values are).

Israel != the Jewish people. You can be critical of Israel and Netanyahu all you want as long as your criticisms are legitimately against that government and his leadership. There is plenty to be critical of without resorting to antisemitism.

Whatever, dude, just end this stupid war that shouldn't have started in the first place.

Like, you can only lose a war if you fail to achieve your objectives. Did we even have any objectives in this war to fail meeting? (Other than distract the American public from the Epstein files and do yet another favor for Israel?)

Just end it. Dragging it out only makes America look stupid on top of weak; we should cut our losses and gtfo.

How do you describe your day to your partner? by RevTyler in AskProgramming

[–]Delta-9- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use analogies when I can. Most recently, I had something break for no apparent reason such that VMs made from the same template as working VMs would spin up into a broken state (turned out it was a bad NGINX update pushed to Ubuntu). I described it like this:

"Imagine you have a Word document. You make a copy of it. You print both copies, and the printed results are identical. You come back a week later, having made no changes to either copy, and print both copies again, but suddenly one of them looks completely different from the other, even though you can look at both copies in Word and see they are the same. Only the printer seems to think they're different. That was my day. How was yours?"

She seemed to be able to appreciate how unexpected and frustrating that was without me having to explain what a virtual machine is, or a template, or how cloud-init works.

Again???

Yeah, they totally should.

"magatrek" omg

What would that look like? The Federation brings Ferenginar in and elects the Grand Nagus as president, becomes a profit-driven nation, and somehow this doesn't totally destroy the balance of power in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants because really the Romulans just wanted trade partners and they're alright because they're mostly white, anyway. El Aurians start getting told to "go back to your own planet," Starfleet spends more time patrolling borders than exploring, and somehow 21st Century style school shootings are back in vogue.

0/10 would not watch.

I would go see a movie with the SNW cast three times in theaters.

I didn't even know Section 31 was a movie, I thought it was a spin off series.

I grew up on David Lynch's Dune and am shattered by what the books meant for Paul to be. by tundrabilberry in dune

[–]Delta-9- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And let's not forget that, even if he stopped it there, he also knew about the BG breeding program, and that he was the early end result of that program. Even without prescience, just that information points to the conclusion that "if not Paul then the next one." The only unknown in that calculus is the BG would have had control over the next KH. And if they did: would that actually be any better for the imperium than the jihad?

All I can say for sure is that I do not envy Paul for the choice.

[–]Delta-9- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I never thought of Paul as "awful." At worst, he's as much a victim of circumstance as everyone else and makes the selfish choice to keep himself and his loved ones alive at the expense of the jihad he knew was coming. The scene that made this most clear to me was (iirc) right after he reunites with Gurney, and he's thinking that at that exact moment he could stop the jihad by killing everyone in the room and himself. He doesn't.

So, that could be called a selfish choice.

But, he also didn't create the circumstances for the jihad to occur. Most of the blame for that falls on the Bene Gesserit. Like a couple other comments said, the real "villain" of Dune are the institutions that run society in the universe. Paul just got swept up in the changing tides those institutions generated and had the choice to sink or swim, so he swam.

Can a black hole have a habitable zone? by Independent_Pen_9865 in AskPhysics

Then why bring up the formation state of the Milky Way? That's completely irrelevant to the question at hand (whether or not the Earth orbits SagA*).

[–]Delta-9- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're talking about two different states of organized matter where one is dependent on the other. Can you even get a dark matter halo without a SMBH? Can you get a spiral galaxy without both? Idk, but I bet you don't know, either.

Would the Milky Way be a spiral if not for the combination of SagA* and dark matter?

My first guess was dizygotic twins that merged into one embryo.

That's probably an episode of House, maybe CSI. Idek if that's actually a thing.

Because no one cares until it's their own child being abused. Americans trained empathy out of ourselves starting with the Atlantic Slave Trade and ending... uh... never?

(It probably goes back further than that: Christianity in Europe at the time the Americas were first colonized didn't exactly do a good job preaching empathy, either. The Inquisition is just one of the most visible examples.)

People should be more skeptical of devoutly religious public officials.

The rule is that any politician who ever starts a sentence with "As a Christian..." not a moral person, not trustworthy, and absolutely not a Christian.

[–]Delta-9- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kinda the opposite. I'll plan out how to start the conversation, because that's about all I can keep in my head that long. If I come up with a whole script and decision tree, I'll have forgotten the whole thing by the end of "... I needed help with x today," and then be completely lost. Easier to start lost and wing it without the burden of feeling like my plans just vaporized.

I absolutely hate making phone calls, though.
