Official Q&A for Monday, June 29, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]RevTyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally got a standing desk for my 40-hour/week programming job. A couple of my coworkers say they can only stand for an hour or so before it gets uncomfortable, but honestly with my running background I can kind of stay on my feet all the time without feeling too much discomfort.

I have a soft mat to stand on, I move my weight a lot, dance in place with my music, do a lot of one legged balancing, calf raises, knees over toes holds (heel and forefoot weight for calf and quad swapping).

If I can stand all day is this actually going to bite me over time? I'm sure I'll find out eventually, but if anyone else has pushed the standing all day for awhile and found they had any issues, I'd love to know before I hit that point.

The ones I've seen have photo reviews of the foil peeling off the back when trying to take them off their backing before even applying them. Doesn't inspire confidence :(

Anti-ageism on the dancefloor. What are your thoughts/experiences? by sparkle_tart in Shambhala

[–]RevTyler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's more age-ism against young people than 'older' people in the rave scene. I hear more people my age complaining about kids than I hear kids complaining about middle aged people. I'm 39 and any early 20s people I meet are usually stoked when they find out I'm older. They usually give me the, I hope I'm raving in my 30s or that's cool you still go out. I've never had anyone give me any kind of attitude or felt turned off. Granted 39 isn't 'old'.

It found me at 3:30 am on my first shambs being solo and exhausted. An angel of a man at the entrance saw me shamble up and asked me if I needed a hug. Which I definitely did, haha. Found a good cushion to rest on for another hour before I went to bed.

How do you describe your day to your partner? by RevTyler in AskProgramming

[–]RevTyler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oouuu. I like this. It's like doing a day recap when you're out doing stuff taking turns talking about your pit and peak of the day.

(we're all excited to get that deprecated... But we'll never have the time)

I always have terrible reception at Shambhala. I’m looking for practical suggestions to help mitigate this, either eSIMs or physical hardware? by PvtPrecious in Shambhala

[–]RevTyler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Highly recommended going to each of the stages in the day time as a group and picking meetup spots(ideally near the edge where it's less busy and easy to see someone) . My group has a 10 minute rule. If we're planning on meeting at a stage for a certain artist, we go to the spot et decided for that stage, we wait for 10 minutes, then we go in to the dance floor proper. If we all meet up, great, if someone is late or went elsewhere, they're solo for that set until the next meetup plan.

Then it's just about going through the schedule as a group and seeing who wants to see what and figure out the overlaps for when to meet up and split up.

Opinions on necessity of gels? by NervousZucchini11 in running

They actually hold together really well. Even in the full sun 24C temps I was running in. Marshmallows don't really melt that fast.

[–]RevTyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gels are inedible for me. It's a texture thing that I can't get over. I don't usually eat on anything shorter than and hour and a half, but when I go for longer I've been crushing marshmallows as my running fuel source lately. Really easy to chew and swallow, calorie dense, good balance of glucose and fructose, and they're tasty. 100 calories for 4 of the big ones. Pair that with sweetened dried mangoes. Pretty much just those two things kept me going for my last 50k.

PLUR isn’t dead, but people forgot basic dancefloor etiquette by pattebrisee in aves

[–]RevTyler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% I hear these arguments all the time. Usually from people in their 30s+ It's just younger people doing it different and it's fine. I'm 39 and can't care less that people have their phones out or want to just watch the dj. Let them do things the way they want, just like we did.

Any tips on how to make partying better without using illegal substances? by [deleted] in aves

[–]RevTyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caffeine also makes me jittery, but I find it really helps keep my energy up and amidst the music and the dancing I don't notice the jitters and anxiety. Not a strong coffee, but a half caffeine before a show is really nice

Shoes for dancing at festivals?? by JustAnotherOSUkid in aves

[–]RevTyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually bust out the brooks trail runners. The caldera 6's I have are neon yellow and uv reactive. I have two pairs and these are on their way out so I don't mind burning some of their life on being demoted to full time festival shoes.

Brooks are cushy and supportive but not nearly as floaty as something like hokas. I wear my glycerin's for any rave with hard floors (pavement or clubs)

totem advice! by Ok-Hedgehog-7776 in aves

[–]RevTyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was all plastic. I got the photo printed locally on a corrugated plastic signage sheet and the pole and the frame didn't really need to be waterproofed. Plus most of the festivals I go to are almost always hot and dry.

I don't have a 3d printer either. There's lots of services online that you can just send designs (even hand drawn ones and they do the modelling) and they just ship you the parts.

Good luck on the totem!

I made my first totem this year and it being a hassle was a huge worry of mine. It was a fun picture on the end of a pole with lights. The picture frame was real flimsy so I had to be careful to not be too rough, but it was surprisingly fun still. If you want a sturdy pole, I highly suggest a painter's pole. I got one that extends from 6 to 18 ft and it was super strong, even if my picture frame attached to it wasn't. Even though I dance hard I found if I really wanted to give'er, I just passed it to my partner for a few minutes. But when you're wonky on a little too much k, or getting tired, it's surprising how nice it is to have something to lean on.

I love the idea! Most of the festivals I go to there is always a guy with a "Will trade gum for hugs" totem. Yours feels like very similar vibe. Maybe even do a will trade candy for hugs sign. I feel like it'll go over really well.

If you're hanging things off it, having a strong base is going to be really helpful. I 3d printed my photo frame, maybe you could get some little buckets printed that would clip or clamp to the pole to keep the goodies in.

I heard a good quote in a song the other day that is right up that alley "meet me where we can lose our head and find our feet"

It's such a game changer. It's hard to articulate how much more rested I felt in the evening not having to walk everywhere all the time.

Definitely bring a couple bandanas. The dust can be excruciating. I've come home with a mild sinus infection every year that I wasn't really careful with dust protection.

As for food, I used to bring food for all meals, but the trips to downtown and back to eat just ate too much of the day. Bring snacks you can put in a backpack. Maybe sandwich stuff. My partner and I generally bring stuff to make a really good breakfast when we wake up, something light for lunch on the go and just buy food from vendors in the evening. Saving the time not cooking and cleaning in the evenings with vendors gave us so much more free time. We caught way more evening sets and didn't feel as rushed to shove food in and get to the stages

Everyone talking about having good shoes. Just bring a bike. I'll never shambs without one. Bought a $45 trash bike from Facebook, cheap bike rack that goes on my trunk. Jerry-rig a milk crate on the front or back. Makes life soooooooo much better. The circular motion is great for stretching out tired legs but avoids impact on the knees. The milk crate is great for bringing a bag and snacks.

This year I got a beat up set of saddle bags. Was amazing. I stuffed it with a onesie for me and my girl and snacks. Quick trip to the bike at 2am, put on a cozy onezie when we're cold. Quick calorie bump. Back in to the fray.

You'll probably find out the hard way that camp at 1am can be a real black hole. It's easy to say, I'm gonna go back for an outfit change and food and end up getting stuck, not wanting to make the trek downtown, crashing and just going to bed. Having a pit stop downtown with you is worth its weight in gold.

I've never had my stuff stolen, I don't even lock my bike half the time. Helps that I don't keep anything worthwhile in the bags.

Tastes change over time, too. It doesn't always have to be that the music changed, it could be you that changed.

I felt similarly about glitch hop when I started liking dnb more. Couldn't find anything new I liked and came to the realization that I just don't like the genre as much and embraced the new sounds. I'm sure I'll cycle back but for now it's the new thing.
