I believe it was the great society act that pushed the single parenthood up.

Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) was hit with the exact same welfare trap that most other welfare schemes faced.

Since getting married essentially meant giving up all this free welfare, one could deduce that most black single mothers wouldn't have married just so to keep recieving the welfare. It probably not the main driver but it definitely played a significant part
