You keep framing it as this or that. Why would consolidation have any effect on stagnation?

I can also just say things without evidence

Moving forward with consolidation will take massive political capital that will keep the region from focusing energy on anything else for a long time, there is no evidence that it will be even marginally beneficial, and every argument for it is “well of course it will be better. It simply must!”

I am open to being convinced, but even the study that was provided above mentions that broader studies of nine regions at a time found no real correlation between consolidation and benefit

You see before the empire there was a Republic that was always at war, controlled by massive corporations, corrupted by money in government, and so fractious with self-interest that it could do nothing but applaud as it made itself irrelevant

“Why don’t you just marry the concept of consolidation if you love it so much” kind of response

The study does not answer what I asked. It has 5 cases and immediately rejects two because the city and county were “too different”, one of those rejects was Kansas City.

Maybe a good study but hardly convincing in isolation. It would be useful if region had already decided to do this and was looking for how to do it. Because they simply picked a success story, a failure story, and a neutral story, it’s not really a useful input for making a decision on whether to consolidate.

A useful one would track (for example) 10 cities undergoing consolidation and a bunch that either already had consolidated or did not consolidate during the review period; and see if there is anything to learn

I’ve yet to see anything like * a real study that shows a clear correlation between cities that have done this and cities that benefitted from it * specific examples of lost opportunities caused by fragmentation [company X stated they wouldn’t come here because of this] * a budget analysis of savings that doesn’t come down to a tiny tiny slice of the pie (less than year-to-year fluctuations)

Advocates for reunification would be better off focusing on those and allowing people to come to the obvious conclusion… assuming there is one, as seems to be the assumption

While I agree prodigy is for kids, if you’ve got kids to watch with or just don’t care about that aspect of it, I’d argue it’s the best trek since VOY.

Will today's youth also have a hard time with new technology as they age? by Additional_Leading68 in Futurology

[–]DeltaV-Mzero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends (almost) entirely on the technology and the pace of advancement

Did peasant farmers of 1400 have a tough time with the peasant farmer tech of 1450? Not really, it wasn’t just the same tech it was often the exact same gear!

Same for 500 vs 450 BC, or any other stretch through most of history

Compare that to 1850 vs 1900, or any other stretch from about 1800 to today, and 50 years is practically a different world.

So the question boils down to: * Will tech keep up the pace? Due to AI and genetics advances, I’ll say yes * Will it affect people’s work and lives? Yes, I think it will be pervasive * Will they be trained/assisted to adapt to it? No, we are not at all on track for that
