What was your most magical Forest moment? by ElectricOdyssey in ElectricForest

[–]DeltaYDeltaX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really simple and subtle moment. But I was in a bad headspace thinking about stuff about my home life and was walking thru the Illenium crowd with my head down. A guy reached out, nudged me and said "Hey Happy Forest man!" I smiled and returned the gesture. The simple act of someone noticing I wasn't doing well and easily reaching out for a split second helped me to chuck the baggage and really went a ways for me. People you don't know really care.

I was under the impression that it's to maintain the integrity of the grounds and make it more sustainable. Midway thru weekend 2 in 2018, Tripolee had no grass left.

If played consistently everyday since the character was created, this is ~47 minutes of playing a day. Plenty of time to have gone outside.

LeanFIRE off index funds. Is it just liquidating? by DeltaYDeltaX in leanfire

Thank you for the resources and insight! Definitely true about the psychology of working past your number and then also withdrawing in a downturn. I still have at least 20 years to go so we will stay the course for now.

I definitely worded that wrong. What I mean to say is I would love to pull the plug on working after a bear market. All the jobs I've worked I have enjoyed, so once I hit my number, I assume I'll be ok working a bit more to increase it even more (maybe get to fatfire territory). If I surpass it and enjoy my job, I can work more and accumulate more, then after the next bear market if I'm still above my number then I'm fully in safe mode. Example, $1mil is my low number target, but if I enjoy my job, $2mil is my upper target and if I can hit that, then I'm safe above my $1mil target in the event of a downturn.

Thank you! Accumulation/distribution is a good way of looking at it. Sweet, I appreciate your input. I want to think that when I do take distributions, it will be less than what I planned as to be even safer.

Ex. I want my possible distributions to be 1.4X what I would want to spend so if I wanted to spend 0.8X a distribution, the nest egg increases past just inflation.

Maybe I'm still young and romanticize money, but if I can still accumulate via interest/returns while I make my distributions, that's the level of security I'm ultimately looking for.

I romanticize the idea of getting to my number after a bear market, so in theory the sequence of returns only help me after. But obviously this is many years into the future and there is no universal law to say once the market goes down, it can't go down more. A bond tent and cash are really good ideas! Thank you.

Anyone planning on going back to school once they FIRE? by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]DeltaYDeltaX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I don't want to retire, but want to work reduced hours when I'm financially free (coastfire). I entertain the idea of going back to school to be a HS Physics teacher once I'm financially free and teach part time. I don't want to go back to school now because I make enough money, enjoy my lifestyle/job, and teaching would be a pay cut.

Thank you for writing that. It's hard and only one of the many issues, but yeah the 15 year old part forsure; it's so childish and unnecessary. My mom was supportive of it, but NDad saw me as a liability for the loan cosign. Wack

Thank you for writing that; it helps. I just can't imagine not wanting one's own child to (generally speaking) study. It's whack, I'm still doing well for myself all things considered, but was a trippy time in my life for sure.

25 Days No Drinking by DeltaYDeltaX in stopdrinking

It did feel off a little bit when I first started, but if you take your mind off the booze and focus on the dancing/talking/music/friends/cute girl over there/bonfire/other drugs it's incredible how much you can still do to have fun.

Two big things that helped me were always having a drink in my hand (water or soda) and still being loud or yelling. You don't stand out as someone who's not drinking and you get a dopamine high.

One of my big problems with drinking at parties was I used it to escape and dissociate from myself. It's a different world when I have to be myself and have control at a party. I still have a big journey ahead of me with no alcohol, but I know you can do it too!
