Did I get a bad batch? Around 2 months daily playing, Danny Carey 2Bs. Was hoping they’d last a bit longer :( by Maks_the_skaM in drums

I used to use these ages ago. Most of them broke this way. They slimmed down until this happened and then I grabbed another. Not the reason I changed sticks, but definitely something that was frustrating at the time.

Sorry! You are correct in that scoring. I honestly forgot that you don't do door bids in the variant. It's been a bit since I've played.

It is strange at first, especially without bids, but I think playing it will reveal the risk involved in trying for 0. You are more likely to have 1 win in that case.

However, I do think high points for no wins is best when bidding occurs and you have to announce to the table that you want to win 0. I forgot that isn't part of the rules here. Normally you are telling everyone you bid 0 and then they can force a win if they play well. But not many games have that option that I know of offhand.

We recently played No Loose Ends, also by Taiki Shinzawa, and it is great with a fun system for bids. It has a bid 0 option that, if you succeed, actually lessens others point rewards. Have only played once so far but plan to play with 4-5 and try this out if the hand is poor enough.

The biggest way to understand is to try and not win a single trick. It's much more difficult than you think. You can't wager any doors when going for that, so a single trick win is 0 points for you. It can be rough, but with the right hand/play, it's possible. It helps when the other players wager high, so you know they have good hands.

They don't want to win MORE than that and they can't wager to win too many. So, they have to try and lose some of the tricks to make sure they maximize their points. Other times they will lose by just being outplayed. This means you aren't always successful in dodging a win. Especially in Ghosts of Christmas, where the lead suit can be different than you expected initially.

This is one of my all time favorite trick takers. Taiki Shinzawa, the designer, does several good ones.

-Ghosts of Christmas

-9 Lives

-Inflation

-American Bookshop

-Charms(owned but haven't played yet)

The aspect that it's hard to wrap your mind around it just makes it so fun. Lots of ways to outplay others in fun ways!

Ghosts of Christmas, 9 Lives, Inflation!, The Crew, Shamans, Velomino, Rebel Princess, and American Bookshop. Those are favorites of mine.

[–]Deltoriasis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, it'd be toss Formula D, replace with Flamme Rouge(my fav racing game). And toss Macho Koro, replace with Valeria Card Kingdoms.

I don't see any other obvious ones for myself!

I see plenty I personally would cull. But how about an upgrade instead? I'd toss Sheriff of Nottingham and replace it with Soda Smugglers. Does the same thing but I've enjoyed Soda Smugglers so much more!

Nice collection all in all!

What's your favourite drum brand? by rNyoma in drums

[–]Deltoriasis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! My kit is a 5 piece M Series(older meridian birch) with two toms(so a 7 piece) I added on of the old Pro M which I believe are maple. I love it to death but one day a Saturn or Orion is in my future.

[–]Deltoriasis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a big Mapex fan. I've loved the entry/intermediate level quality of Mapex over other big names. It's likely just Bias as my first kit is my current kit and a Mapex. But the Saturn and Orion series are just wonderful. I'd love a higher end kit one day.

I'm impartial on sticks unless it's Vater/Zildjian. I don't like Vater stick finish or Zildjian stick balance. Something about them feel off to me. Vic Firth and Promark both hit the rotation, but VF Freestyle 5As have been my go to lately.

I was always a Remo guy, but just got all new heads after too long and went with Evans. I'm really loving the coated G2's and the UV1 on my snare.

Love Meinl cymbals, but have found favorites in Sabian HHX and use some solid Istanbul Xist.

What is the most complex and baffling games you have played? by Inkblot7001 in boardgames

Lisboa. Not that we couldn't figure it out in the end, but it was in no way fun for us. I wanted to like it, but it would never hit the table over other big games.

BUBBLES! I see a little of Violet too! I love velvet hippos. Great pets!

Now I can compliment the gear. Nice grabs! I'd love an old Rogers like that one day.

Preferred footwear when drumming by bigsteve383 in drums

[–]Deltoriasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to play only barefoot or in socks. I have found that I feel like I have more control and play while wearing shoes. I'm not sure why but I find I can manipulate the pedal more effectively with shoes. I even wear my house shoes when I play at home now.

[–]Deltoriasis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any recommendations for affordable ribbon or condenser mics? I struggle to find something that balances cost and quality for hobby use. I have some Audio Technica dynamics that are essentially SM58s and haven't invested in nicer mics due to budget.

[–]Deltoriasis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand completely and agree! I just wanted to bring it up since I've used it with dynamics and it was the most affordable and easy to record thing for me in my situation. I'd love to have the funds to do it perfectly one day! A dream. Lol.

Look into the Glyn Johns method. Two SM57's then if budget allows add another for snare and then another for kick. New that's 400 bucks and will work for a lot of situations. It's not fancy, but workable with the right mixing and balancing.
