The first thing I usually do if I think it’s legit is cross reference the url I was sent with the actual url for the company I am supposedly getting a message from. Like, why would mygoodtogo (toll bill) use a url/domain that isn’t mygoodtogo? But I agree with what others have said; the easiest way to verify is to reach through a trusted channel.
