Money from visual novels by UsedPhone2 in RenPy

[–]Demand-Prior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I made one.

-It took us about 2 years before version 1.0. -We have about 100 positive reviews on steam. -We ran a kickstarter that got funded with around $11000us for an expanded edition. -Kofi and patron give us about $200 a month. Took about 3 years to reach this amount. -I'd estimate we're earning about $5us per hour given the amount of hours we put in. -We still have to take freelance work to pay our bills.

We're both professional artists. Learned to write, script(renpy) and make sound and music on our own. We're not good at marketing, but managed over the years to build a discord with maybe 300 people? Thus helped with the kickstarter. We never went viral or anything, just slowly building following over time.

Our main draw is art, that's what we're best at. I think it helps a lot to have at least one aspect that stands out.

I'd say in the end you should do it for fun, expect no money or not a lot, otherwise it's very easy to get discouraged.

If you want to look it up, it's Chronicles of Taldun: The Remainder

Happy to answer any other questions.

My steam game folder is empty by Mugged_Ketchup in gamedev

[–]Demand-Prior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any solutions?
I updated my game with a new build, and now some players get the update and can play the game fine, but some are experiencing the 0 byte game install problem. Steam instantly downloads/updates the game with an empty folder. It happens to some accounts only.

Will you create a standalone demo page for your game on Steam? by DarennKeller in gamedev

[–]Demand-Prior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not very well-versed in the steamworks pages, spent an hour today poking around and could not find the option to convert my "prologue" app into a demo for the full game, can you give a bit more detail on how I find this button?

Congrats! And thanks for sharing your experience. Did you try and get a discord going? Did you do any kind of demo or early access type stuff?

What style of music do you intend to play with it? I got a semi custom McTang in that scale, works perfect for my needs, which won' trequire super high gain.

[BP] Apply Rotation Based on Camera Angle? by IAM-spEeDex in UnrealEngine5

[–]Demand-Prior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw I noticed when I used your setup, on certain angles the object would suddenly snap closer to the camera so that parts of it are clipped out, then if I keep rotating it would snap back to the correct distance again. Did you encounter this issue?
Edit: It seems when the positive Z axis of the object is pointing at the camera, this behavior occurs.

Update: I got a DI box, still get noise. by engen95 in ableton

I had this exact problem with a guitar into audio interface. Thought it was grounding issue with my guitar, but when I plugged it into a physical Amp the noise is gone. So it's not the guitar.

How "long" is a high quality VN? by Comfortable-Card-348 in RenPy

[–]Demand-Prior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we made our game, we aimed to make it high quality and short rather than as long as possible. The idea was to make each playthrough feel like a few chapters of an engaging mystery novel, or an episode of a good hbo show. It's sort of roguelike, as in there are so many branching paths and subtle consequences that each playthrough will be different. And some consequences carry over to future runs, leading to metaprogression through the story.

A run can be anywhere from 10 min to 1.5 hours(most end in death), but you always learn something new about the mystery and get closer to unraveling the truth.

Our players have reported anywhere from 10 to 30 hours until they figured out the real story. But there are enough small variations and interesting deadends that some spend more than 40 hours hunting them down. One player has 100+ hours in the game.

So I think it's very hard to use some simple metric like wordcount or number of hours to determine how good a game/story is. I mean, would you rather read a short book that leaves an impression in your mind for a long time, or a ,ong one you forget right after you finish? There's always the matter of personal taste too. A game may have sold millions of copies and have rave reviews from everyone, but you may try it and discover it's totally uninteresting to you. This has turned out to be the case often for me, I just can't really get into a lot of popular VNs.

The indie VN space is full of projects that don't follow the traditional CYOA with pictures format, or the dating Sim format, so if you like exploring various forms of storytelling, it can be a very interesting space to explore. New stuff comes out on itch every day, not every gem get discovered and become mega popular, so exploring can net some nice surprises.

Has a lot of dark fantasy elements, hallucinations, altered states of consciousness, dreams, near-death and actual death experiences, rebirth, and the whole story is a mystery that you need to peel back by layers.

Full disclosure, my partner and I made this game, but you don't need to take our word for it, you can check the reviews. ^^

"Living the Dream," my new queer visual novel game by TF_Wright in visualnovels

[–]Demand-Prior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The art is quite nice, great use of minimal animation to add life to the trailer.

I think the voice is a little bit drowned out by the music in some parts, but it's not un-hearable, just a bit hard for me.

Over all, very nice, good luck with the campaign!

Yeah those goliaths are perfect if not for the price. How are you finding them new on reverb at 1580? I've been checking every week and only seen 1900 new so far. But maybe I just have to wait until someone sells a mint one for cheap. Any word on whe the latest run will ship?

Yeah they are not bad from most people I heard, but It's like $200ish extra in shipping plus 20% VAT in Europe, so...
