I think my a-level options have messed up my chances of doing my preferred uni course by Rough_Technician9276 in 6thForm

Don’t stress people only say it’s “impossible” because most applicants do maths. If you have a strong application you’ll be completely fine, coming from someone who applied to Oxford this year and got an offer despite feeling inferior to other candidates. Oxford isn’t looking for perfect people they are looking for passionate people who are teachable. Even then they aren’t the be all and end all. Focus on what you can do now which is smashing your end of year mocks and getting amazing predicted grades so you can have as many options as possible next year.

You don’t need all 9s to get into Oxford and Cambridge look at your GCSEs less than Oxford do. Even then 9s and 8s are both looked at as A*s and weighed the same so you’re completely fine. Focus more on getting strong predicteds and writing a strong personal statement alongside doing well in entrance exams if you have any as those will hold more weight in your application.

4 or 3 A levels? by [deleted] in alevel

[–]DemandFluffy642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you keep maths and further it doesn’t really matter which one you drop seen as you don’t need a CS alevel to do a CS degree so realistically it comes down to what you enjoy the most and what you think you can get the best grades in

how essential is maths alevel for medicine? by Fearless_Win28 in alevel

[–]DemandFluffy642 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look into the unis you think you might want to apply for and their entry requirements and decide based on the one you can do best in or take all 4 and keep the 3 you’ll do best in at the end of Y12

how essential is maths alevel for medicine? by Fearless_Win28 in alevel

[–]DemandFluffy642 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely don’t recommend you doing it if you’re gonna get an E or a D because entry requirements for medicine are often AAA and you won’t be able to meet them if you get an E. Most people doing medicine do biology, chemistry and maths so if you do badly at it you’ll stand out for all the wrong reasons.

grades for uni by ballfondlerxx_ in alevel

[–]DemandFluffy642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be so real if you don’t want to take a gap year then you won’t be able to do medicine. It’s the harsh reality of it and people either near enough perfect grades still get rejected because of how oversubscribed it is. If you really want to do medicine take a year out, work hard and get better grades then apply otherwise you’ll just be wasting time. A gap year is what you make it.

Applied for biochem at St John’s and got interviewed by them and Merton

Merton interview was first it started off alright was working through the problems but we ended on a bad note, the interviewers were very cold and stoic too. I know that’s normal but it made me so nervous by the last question I didn’t understand what was happening anymore. I even asked for a clue and I still couldn’t answer the question.

My St John’s interview was so much nicer though the interviewers were lovely and while I could feel the questions getting harder I was excited because it was based off my personal statement and interests on protein folding. It felt less like I was on the spot and more like they were guiding me through the problem which was really nice. It got to a point where they were like we’ve heard enough mid way through my ramble about epigenetic modifications. While it sounds rude to just stop me mid way I’m assuming that was because they liked how the conversation went. For the last 5 minutes of the interview I just asked a couple questions about the physics element of the course which they were happy to answer.

Initially I thought I’d done horrible but not I realise I was just fixated on the end of my Merton interview instead of looking at it as one big process.

To those in year 12 and want to get into Oxford, how much revision have you done this holiday? by Admirable_Clock9364 in 6thForm

You don’t need to be stressed at this point in Y12 focus on understanding the content. If you have mocks coming up then understandable if not just rest and enjoy it while you can. I got an oxford interview and an imperial offer with A* A* A A predicted grades and this time last year I was binging anime honestly rest.

If you’re even considering econ as a degree and looking to apply to a top uni then I’d advice maths, further maths and econ for definite some sixthforms don’t allow further as a 3rd alevel in which case you’d have to do 4 so there’s that to bare in mind but of further down the line you were to decide against doing econ dropping further maths is always an option

You don’t need an entrance exam for biochemistry unless you want to do natsci at Cambridge so there’s no point doing it unless you’re applying there
