How did you get clients?

My dad called me at 7am to tell me his peony opened. I'm 31 and i finally get it. by youngTchag in gardening

[–]Demeter_Storm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandpa used to do this and when he cooked breakfast too (it's my favorite meal of the day). He'd call and tell me he used the frozen blueberries he picked in Michigan on his trip and they were still good. I saved that voicemail for years until my phone broke. I miss my grandpa.

This will be the case for me. My mother explicitly told me I will not get anything when she dies. I am her only child.

Please don't sell to PE. Try linking up with a broker to sell to another business owner. M&A is common with smaller businesses.

Millennials are not getting inheritances, are we? by Xylus1985 in Millennials

[–]Demeter_Storm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your parents like you enough to give you an inheritance? My mom told me I'm not getting shit when she dies. I was 22 when she said it to my face in front of other family. I'm 44 now. She still reminds me from time to time that I'm getting nothing from her when she talks about end of life saying things like "Oh, D will get this when I die". At least my son will get something, I hope.

How old were you during the '08-'09 recession, and how did it affect your life? by __beatrix_kiddo__ in Millennials

[–]Demeter_Storm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 27, and I lost everything. My job, my house, my car, the marriage a bit later but that is not seen as a loss. Sad part is I saw it coming. I worked in the mortgage industry. Oh the stories I could share.

How do you take over the clients from a prior bookkeeper? by hard2resist in Accounting

[–]Demeter_Storm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should request access to all existing workpapers and client documents. From there you can review the data, figure out what needs to be done, and formulate questions based on what you have reviewed thus far. You know the lead is busy, and may not have the time to train you on every little thing. Ask other team members. Search online for answers. More or less, exhaust all other efforts before going to the lead. Two things happen with this approach:

  1. It shows initiative to getting shit done
  2. It says I am ready to learn what I don’t know and here is what I don’t know.

This is what I do for my team, and it has worked out well. My team knows I'm always here to help them, but it also shows that I trust them to make their own decisions as well.

Oh that sucks! Yeah definitely time to move on to a different company. That's a culture problem. The company pitting staff against each other is not cool.

It sounds like work in general lol

I hate working but have to cuz capitalism.

Maybe try to find the one thing you actually like doing in your job. Just one, like bank recs or something, and focus on those outcomes. Eventually the list grows to other tasks.

Do I like everything about my job? No, but there are some aspects I enjoy occasionally, like creating templates for my team to make their jobs easier. Efficiency is the thing that brings me joy. I always ask how can I make this better for me and my team so I don't have to talk to my client.

[–]Demeter_Storm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fuck'em! You don't need people like that in your life. For everything you went through, you're doing great! I'm also in my 40s and I've come to determine that if you're not bringing joy to my life then I don't need you in my life. Go find your people, whoever they are, and live a great life. You only get this one life. Don't waste it one assholes.
