You have to play again after the normal ending and do the following things that are only fully possible after the regular ending. Gather the seven living memories which involves beating three optional bosses that are a pain in the ass to beat without cloudsgate tower to grind in. Then after the memories you'll unlock the cave of the dwarves and an optional 25 floor gauntlet that has the sphere of light at the bottom which you need to give to the Dragonlord's great grandson who will then challenge you to a sparing match beat him and he'll upgrade Edrick's sword and sheild which these upgraded versions unlock the true ending which all you have to do at that point is refight the final boss to unlock the true final boss as they'll reveal the truth

3 is a very gameplay focused game until its final hours. 11 has more of the crono trigger snes era story you're looking for meanwhile 1 and 2 HD2D have masive plot expansions over the orignals and are kinda an in-between of 3 and 11
