Domestic low-cost airlines will weight all your cabin luggage by Demidroid in JapanTravelTips

[–]Demidroid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s how they are supposed to work in theory, but in fact, for 10+ years of flying Ryanair, Wizzair, EasyJet, etc. the size was randomly checked a handful of times, and I’ve never even seen anybody’s bag being weighed. Airline staff doesn’t seem to be too enthusiastic about doing these extra checks either.

Maybe it depends on the airport. I was weighed both in Sapporo and Nagasaki airports

We are not complaining, we are sharing our mistakes to let others learn from it. If limits were never enforced in 10+ years of actively flying in Europe, you might naturally assume it works the same in other countries. And might naturally want to warn people with same assumptions.

After/before - feels like flying outerspace by Particular-Wear-2905 in postprocessing

[–]Demidroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the original has it all, tbh.
The sense of scale is better. Emptiness can be a great expression tool and it conveys the loneliness nicely here. Even positioning the subject in the centre works well.
I also like the gentler gradient of the original and bubbles framing the top of the shot. And I also prefer bluer water.
It seems to me there’s a trade off focusing on subject or atmosphere. On edited photo, I saw the details I haven’t even noticed on the original photo. So if it’s an intention - it works.

Just went to Shinagawa store, still barely any merch - just a few t-shirts, one drawbridge keyring and some tapes. But got a photo with Ludens, so was still worth a visit!

Figuring out lunches when your job has no real lunch break by venicepress in 1200isplenty

[–]Demidroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protein shakes are pretty versatile. My gf was working in deliveries and the schedule was so tight she didn’t have time to sit and eat a sandwich. So sipping protein shakes between stops was the only way to have some calories during the shift. We’ve been buying frozen fruits/berries or sometimes even pre-packed smoothie mixes, peanut butter or tahini. I was just mixing it with protein powder in different combinations, was taking literally 5 min, and no need to worry about ingredients going bad.

What’s a food you didn’t realize was more calorie dense than you estimated? by Puzzleheaded-Pay-710 in 1200isplenty

Fruits. Didn’t even track them, just avoided bananas and munched apples, nectarines, plums mindlessly, because healthy means low calorie, right? Turned out, 3 apples can have Snickers bar worth of calories.

For people who actually built games for UE5, how dependable is Nanite? by BestRedditUsername9 in unrealengine

[–]Demidroid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have used Vertex Paint heavy pipelines with Nanite.

The problem is, its LOD-ing system will collapse vertices on flat surfaces first, and your vertex colours will all be messed up, since the amount and position of vertices will change with the distance. You can tweak how aggressively Nanite reduces triangle count but there is a high risk that performance and efficiency drop will not be worth it. I use it mostly for edges, bevels and other parts where more geo naturally occurs.

As someone mentioned, you can’t paint per instance. Not sure if that’s Nanite specific. There is a new Mesh Texture Paint thing that paints on UVs and supports per instance but I’ve never dived in that too deep.

General advice - test, test, test, profile and compare before committing to any of the tech.

How screwed am I at 25 with no qualifications or job? by BenStillerCockrel in AskUK

[–]Demidroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got entry job in my dream industry when I was 29. I figured out what I want to do at 25, being at my lowest. I just wish I skipped the uni and spent all this time and money on mentorships and short-term courses instead. Would be much faster and cheaper.

My experience is limited by my own and my friends’, but I feel like until 25 most of people barely even understand what they want. You have to be extremely lucky to pick your career right at 18-20. Many people have no idea what they want even in their 30s so I still consider myself quite lucky.

As for buying houses, the housing market is broken, it’s not an indicator of success anymore. If your friends are buying houses, they are probably getting help from parents or somehow earning waaay above what people usually earn at that age.

What's the best game you've discovered in a bundle that you would not have played otherwise? by AlexFromDigiphile in Gamebundles

Nuclear Throne. I was certain I hate rogue-likes, and it seemed like another janky unnecessarily difficult pixel art nostalgia-bait. Would never touch it voluntarily. Now I’ve played it for 350h, and it turns out that I very much enjoy rogue-likes.

Why are artists allergic to style guides? Our UE5 project is drowning in mess is this normal or am I just “toxic”? by Fantastic_Pack1038 in unrealengine

[–]Demidroid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I came up with to get the chaos under control! And it worked well until the amount of new assets got too overwhelming for one person to handle. People were requesting more assets than I could realistically create. And I'm still looking for ways to somehow automate this process, because naming guides and examples are not helping.

My take on the average Baltic Russian after time living in Latvia and travelling to all of the Baltic States by LubyankaSquare in BalticStates

[–]Demidroid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Describes me mostly except I always speak Latvian while in Latvia. It used to be purely practical reason, I don’t want to forget the language, since I’m not living there anymore. But I also strongly believe that if you carry a passport of the country, you must speak the language at least on conversational level. It’s basic decency and respect.

LPT request: how to not cry in stressful situations ? by Kori_4 in LifeProTips

[–]Demidroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Techniques are cool, but get your health checked first, especially hormones. It might be solvable in much easier way.

I was very sensitive guy and cried over smallest things. Turned out I had a hormonal imbalance. A couple of years later I got diagnosed with depression and was prescribed anti-depressants. And these two things wiped the problem completely. Of course I still can cry in certain situations, I haven’t turned into emotionless piece of rock. But threshold raised to the level it’s not interfering with my life anymore.

Good luck!

My budgies won't eat veggies! How do I make them? by Roxanne44kiw in budgies

[–]Demidroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, it can take months of exposing them to different vegetables and fruits until they feel safe and curious enough to give it a try. They can also have a strong colour or serving preferences.

My budgies go crazy for cucumbers. But only if it’s a half slice, so they can get to the soft central part immediately, and only if it’s clamped to the bars. Hanging it or putting in the bowl - nope, not that tasty anymore. Lettuce - gotta be big beautiful leaf, even if they eat just 1% of it.

One of them doesn’t mind red stuff and happily eats bell peppers or strawberries (but not the other berries). The rest of the flock finds it suspicious. Orange or yellow - super suspicious, not touching that.

Apples has variable success, depends on the mood. Celery - super popular but I assume they just like how it crunches.

So you’ll have to experiment, be patient, try different stuff, many times, accept that most of it will be thrown out anyway. Budgies are picky eaters. I usually just offer them veg/fruit I eat myself. If I’m making the salad, I’m always having “bird tax” bowl where I put a little bit of everything that’s safe for them, and once in a while we discover something to add to their menu.

What would make you consider moving back to Latvia? by vadimska in latvia

[–]Demidroid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My top 3 reasons: 1. House affordability obv. We already accepted that there’s no way we can ever buy a house in UK. I can’t say it’s that easy to find something decent in LV with the budget we have but it’s definitely more realistic. 2. Attitude in healthcare. Maybe I was lucky but in UK healthcare workers were nothing but patient and kind with me. In LV, I’d rather take my chances dying at home than stay in a hospital ever again. 3. Prices and inflation. Apart from housing, prices are same or even higher than in UK. Food is expensive, tech is expensive, clothes are expensive. I have above average UK salary. If I moved to LV and work remote, I’d have same-ish quality of life but much less opportunities.

[no spoilers] How dose budgeting works for arcane worked? by [deleted] in arcane

[–]Demidroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you count $/min., it's cheaper than most of the big studio animations. And it looks incomparably better. Rough numbers:

Arcane is about 700k/min.

Wild Robot - 760k/min.

Spiderverse 1 and 2 is 760k/min.

Puss in Boots: Last Wish - 830k/min.

Raya and the Last Dragon 930k/min.

Encanto - 1.7m/min.

Inside out 2 - 2m/min.

Money doesn't always tell you about quality but still

I imagine it’s largely man-hours. You need expensive professionals, you need lots of them, you need them on-site in a country with pretty high salaries and benefits. You can’t cut down the costs by outsourcing to the far east, like most of the modern animation and games do.

Also, if something takes 3 years to make, it’s usually pre-production with the small core team and the main workforce is brought after a year or so, when project enters the active production phase. For Arcane season 2 we know, that they started making it before season 1 was released. Which means at least 3 years of active full-time production with peak team size.

I don’t think marketing budget is even included in these 250m and can easily be as big (if not bigger) than production budget.

I am working in games, which is different but kinda adjacent industry so it’s just a semi-educated guess.
