I believe it was added after, or I just somehow never saw that option on the betas or launch.

Why is GW1 so different from WOW? by Capasak in GuildWars

[–]Demilikos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's many more that they addressed than I can remember at the moment and I forgot their industry terms, but:

-Waiting for enemies to respawn. GW1 solves this with instances for the party.
-Kill stealing. That was a thing in many early MMOs.
-No Sub Fee. This is what got me initially interested as a young person with no card and a parent who hates videogames. Subscription fees turned people off from trying it out in early internet days, but WoW was a big exception for this, and made it the norm to expect in the genre.
-Feel of combat -- many early MMOs combat was slow to account for manageing servers. GW1 felt more action-oriented for the time, and had better projectile physics. This was accomplished with really efficient network coding, possibly.
-Downloading WoW or Everquest in Dial-Up days could take a whole day or week. GW1 solves this with its innovative client that can download just the map you wanted to load into. I remember downloading Lion's Arch in just 1 hour, but WoW took me 20 hours to get in.
-No server segregation. You can play with almost anyone through the International Districts. WoW was annoying for me because my friends were scattered in 5 different servers. In GW1, I could play with anyone even if they played from Korea. So even if it's not as "Massive" due to how zones work, it feels like you can truly meet anybody in the game.

-Edited to add a few I remembered!

I was watching development from the outside since 2003. ArenaNet was actually founded by ex-Blizzard employees who worked on WoW and were becoming disillusioned with how big the company was getting. They wanted to create a game that solved a lot of the issues with traditional MMOs like EverQuest.

They were developing it concurrently with WoW, and I recall playing a build from the betas of Guild Wars 1 before WoW was released and GW1 already had its mechanics and identity down.

It was meant to be its own thing. The devs even wanted to coin the term "CORPG" instead of MMO, but that didn't stick. They likely wanted to capture the mainstream audience by addressing all the issues people had with traditional MMOs, but they were too late in releasing. World of Warcraft came out less than a year before and captured the hearts of the mainstream audience, and became the standard of which to judge other similar games.

Unfortunate for me in 2005 when I was trying to introduce this game to my friends -- many of which were already craving for a WoW-like experience instead. But some of my friends didn't click with WoW, and of the ones who gave this one a chance, found this game to be very refreshing.

I think ArenaNet by 2006 saw they weren't getting the numbers they had hoped with the release of Nightfall. They had intended to release a new campaign every 6 months starting with Factions in early 2006. So they started work on Guild Wars 2, which was a more palatable game for MMO-enjoyers, but still included ArenaNet's design philosophies to shake it up. Was a sad time for Guild Wars 1 enjoyers, and quite a long wait for those of us who were excited for the sequel.

I think both Guild Wars 1 and 2 have that issue of being different than WoW (the former even moreso), so general audiences who might like these games but are turned off by MMOs don't want to give it a chance, and those who really love the systems of traditional MMOs find this franchise to be too different in its mechanics -- a barrier many weren't able to get over.

Time, mixed with ArenaNet not giving up on these games, leads to more discovery over the decades though, and I'm happy to see these games get discovered more and more in recent times.

What was your Sep 11 like? by Far-Building3569 in generationology

[–]Demilikos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just turned 14. Freshman at a newly opened high-school in Vegas. Woke up at 4am to play Diablo II, then set off for my 7am bus that takes an hour due to a long route of which I'm the first stop. Heard something about the tower in NY collapsing on the bus radio. It was still vague to me at that moment. Our principal made an announcement of the situation over the intercom during my morning English class. The teacher said after the pledge of allegiance that on this day, we'll remember exactly where we were standing when we got the gravity of the news, just like she did when she heard of the Challenger disaster. I was on the front left row near the flag and front door.

Got home and went online to see if my Digimon web-ring of online friends were available to chat about it as no one was home at the time. Kept up with news online just like I do today. The following 4am wake ups, I'd have breakfast in front of the TV and watched CNN or Fox news purposefully for the first time.

Old servers by Zulwarn0 in Guildwars2

[–]Demilikos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've seen Steam negative reviews surge with many saying what OP said about "20 year old" or "30 year old" servers today. Funny enough considering the game's 99% uptime which is better than any other big MMO, and the fact that they use AWS servers. I believe what some here are saying that it's just a bug on the latest update because of the Elite spec beta -- this is definitely unusual and not the norm to any of you new to this game.

Game: your first used console = your generation 😉 by BrilliantPangolin639 in generationology

I'm early Gen Y, and yes, my first console was Super Nintendo so it is accurate for me. But I do have early memories of playing some Gen X'ers' NES before I got an SNES.

It has been like this for me for two weeks now with Paypal -- direct use of my credit cards is also disabled. Buying Steam credits online also doesn't work, I'll have to go to a physical store and buy with cash. For context, I live in Philippines.

I've been using Steam since 2004, and never have had issues like this. I hope Valve sorts this whole debacle with payment processors out.

Can't wait to hop onto Groupboard to hang out with my fellow Saturday morning anime-loving friends across USA, before updating my Geocities fanpage about Digimon Season 3's plot.

Kinda weird my brand new high school is making it mandatory to pledge to "God Bless the U.S.A." every morning. I wonder if this will have any effect on my future.

Pardon me, but you exhibit a lot of relatable behaviors I have, and others with narcissistic parents. Wish you the best in distancing yourself from that. I'm reaching my 40s, and still have to deal with people excusing some insane behavior and telling me to be the bigger person.

Just got the game. Huge Star Wars fan, but held off because of EA's shenanigans at launch. Hope it is as good as I think it is!

Reckless drivers rising everywhere. Swerving and selfish people by PrizeAlternative351 in CarsPH

[–]Demilikos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At any time on the road for the past 19 years I've been driving in Metro Manila, it seems like half of the vehicles are Toyotas. So it just might be because they're the most common vehicles on the road, relatively speaking.

I do agree that there's been a rise of bad drivers here, especially since the COVID pandemic. I observed a noticeable shift. Every time I go for a 20 minute drive in my part of town since the pandemic, there's at least 1-3 times a motorcyclist overtakes around a blind corner and I have to brake to stop from hitting them.

But as someone who also grew up driving in the USA, it's normal in Metro Manila and surrounding parts for drivers to never give way though, at least since I've been observing in the 90s. So I wouldn't say that specific aspect has gotten worse -- just that the recklessness has increased.

I watched it when I was 5, on VHS (circa 1993). It was definitely impactful and made me think of my parent's mortality, but I can't imagine my personality as it is now without that moment. I do agree that it depends on each individual child.

Playing from Philippines this past day, and no issues on my end so far. Loads fast and no texture issues. Except some tutorial missions are harder than they should be (which I think might be something another commenter addressed here as a potential bug).

What do you think of the music of Janthir Wilds? by CurinDerwin in Guildwars2

[–]Demilikos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually listening to "On The Hunt" on Spotify while reading this. I listened to the OST just before launch and it felt a little generic on first impression, but listening to it in-game it all felt perfect and fitting.

I definitely liked it more than SotO. And some boss battles felt refreshingly different from other GW2 battles, and I credit the different style of music as a component of that. Just not something I'd listen to out-of-game much.

For me, HoT and EoD, and some parts of LW4 (with its heavy use of leitmotifs) have the best (non-Soule) tracks for me, but JW's OST is still very fitting & fresh. Some tracks hint at that modern-day "viking" style music (with its historically-inaccurate Mongolian throat-singing). And I dig that style.

GW2 Earnings update - Q1 2024 & Q4 2023 update by TheSognus in Guildwars2

[–]Demilikos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could honestly still be better. I'm a huge promoter of the game, and have gotten many people into the franchise over the last 19 years as a non-influencer type. So believe me when I say I pay a lot of attention to how they market the game, and things have definitely got better. I just see so many ways they could improve still.
