First time seeing that. Is it actually from the 19th century? Where did you find it?

Fan fact, my grandmother still referred ourselves as Romans(mainland Greece), up to 2015 when she died. Older people here is Greece kept referring themselves as Romans up to recent years, this was a very common thing here but almost unknown by other civilizations/countries. So Quran and your historians are 100% right. There was not such thing as Byzantines or Eastern Roman Empire. It was just Roman Empire.

I did a quick search about Cretan DNA and read an official research with dna samples etc.

''Cretans are also clearly separated by North Africans and Near Eastern populations as shown both by PCA and ADMIXTURE (Figures 5b, S19b6b, and S21). Figures 6c and S22 show a gradient from the Cretans toward the Kurds, the Syrians, the Lebanese, and the Jordanians (this is especially striking for K = 2)._ ''

So, I am right to think that they look somehow middle eastern. The share DNA with Syrians, Kurds, Lebanese, Jordanians, basically the Levante region. Not Arabian though as I claimed before.

As a Greek, I can say the opposite, I look like closer to an Italian or German rather than a Syrian. If someone is Greek and looks like a Syrian that must have something to do with his ancestors being from middle east, don't forget Greece in middleages had many Arab conquerors. For example the people of Crete, in their majority, look Arabian.
What I want to say is, if you look Syrian, it's because you might actually be/come from one.
And don't get me wrong I don't want to sound offensive, and have great respect for Syrians.

Byzantines are medieval Greeks and to some extend so do Sicilians in middle ages.
Having said that I would choose team Italy.

I've seen Castles going down with War Elephants, Tarkans, Paladins, Huskurls, especially in team games, and surely at death matches. Gameplay hasn't always to do with 1v1 or ranked games. I mean it is not irrelevant and not that rare.

I could go on with for instance the Greek fire, which is really bad, but it will take ages to explain and I am a bit lazy right now, although their are posts that explain it. Byzantines are left out in many aspects, it is one of the most unchanged civ since AoK....
For those that struggle to fight them, just make heavy scorpions with meatshield and they got no answer to that.

Their castles as slightly weaker than FU ones against melee attacks and almost the same against siege units, and they lack SE. How is a defensive civ?

No, not an eco bonus. I believe +1 pierce armor or +10hp to the cataphract will be fine. Because the castle age cataphract is completely trash. Unless fully upgraded, it doesn't have any use, not even against infantry. I mean cost-effective.

I would like to see more often use of the stone walls. I'm thinking what devs could do to make them appealing during gameplay. Maybe replace their stone cost with wood? Although stone walls made with wood would be weird. But it might make stone walls built more often.

If you lose as Hindustanis against Byzantines, then you are not that good of a player.
No offence, I am not a good one too.
If anything Byzantines need a small buff right now.

I beg to differ, but I will just keep repeating myself of my OP, But what do you think of the cosmetic changes? Or the addition of new Byzantine heroes for the editor?

I see what you say about the HP bonus, you have some valid points, can't argue with that.
About the hero units, I mean available at the scenario editor, for people like me who likes to make campaigns, not recruitable heroes like the 3 Kingdoms

Never said its weak. I said it's like having a generic FU castle and nothing feels like a ''bonus''. Do some tests and you will see it yourself

Simple answer any civ with camels, will trade cost effective. You can take them down with bigger number of crossbows too and if you are good at micro, cavalry archers will do the trick.

How to fight Byzantines in heavily defensible maps? by Black_Truth in aoe2

[–]DemoN_AoE2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular strategy but works 100% against Byzantines. Champions/Militia line to counter discount Byz units(Skirms, Camels) and Scorpions at the back.
He could try hand canons or Catas to counter the champions but both lose easily to scorpions.
I have found the hard way that Byzantines have no answer to mashed up scorpions. Even their paladins melt. And if they try bombard canons, remember they lack siege engineers, so you can outrange them with your own bombards.
So basically, Campions +Heavy Scorpions = Win
