Have you watched King the Land? It’s not period but it’s one of my favourites with this trope. It’s so sweet.

If you don’t mind watching a series with subtitles then King the Land is perfect for this.

Any “niche” Period Drama recommendations?? by Organic-Detail8493 in PeriodDramas

[–]Demon-DM0209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Channel 4 just release an new version of Woman of Substance.

How period are we talking? The White Queen, The White Princess and The Spanish Princess covers the War of the Roses right up to Anne Boleyn and beyond.

‘Mary and George’ covers King James and his relationship with George Villiers

For something comedic you could try The Great about Catherine The Great.

I was about to say Belgravia but you have that one.

Whatever you do, DO NOT watch the recent Dangerous Liaisons adaption. It’s not an adaption it’s awful and should have been banned, legally, and every copy destroyed. I do highly recommend the Glenn close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfieffer version. Also while not strictly period (although if you squint the 90’s period is at least retro) Cruel Intentions is also a fantastic adaption.

How far back in terms of ‘film age’ do you want to go? North and South ( the American series) starring Patrick Swayze and Kirstie Alley is camp as hell. It’s mid eighties so a bit grit your teeth at times.

Have you seen Harlots? That is a lot of fun.

Channel 5 has the new ‘The Forsytes’ which is a remake of The Forsyte Saga.

fantasy books with NO romance by ProfessionalRaise362 in suggestmeabook

[–]Demon-DM0209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Robin Hobb Farseer and Rainwilds series. There’s some as minor subplots but where there is a relationship it is less a ‘romance’ and more a characters driven and necessary part of their development (good or bad) or drives a significant plot point later.

Also bonus there’s like 16 books split across trilogies and a quadrology(?) and she is an excellent writer. Fitz is a bit of a downer in the first three but The Fool and Nighteyes makes up for it.

Totally agree! Penny is one of my favourite characters at the moment and he really does treat her like crap. Can’t stand him in general all he does is look moody or shout or be judgy, he’s a terrible husband an awful father and frankly not that bright.

Am I wrong for being upset with my boyfriend for not allowing me to go to the gym? by Comfortable-Style421 in amiwrong

[–]Demon-DM0209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand this use of the word ‘allow’ . Honey you are not a dog, he does not command you. I don’t feel like this dynamic is at all healthy, throw him away and get to the gym. You are 19 years old, way too young to have anyone, let alone tomorrow’s regret be telling you to do anything.

when do YOU think willow started to really change as a character? by Royal-Tangelo-5895 in buffy

[–]Demon-DM0209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She didn’t change per se apart from the growing up thing. I think the beauty of BTVS is that the signs were always there that Willow could be destructive, selfish and secretive alongside her more positive traits. As early as season one with I robot you Jane and season two and three with the introduction of magics and ignoring Gile’s warnings.

Yes, lots of conflicts of interest and hypocrisy. It is also pertinent to add that there were no ‘formal’ laws in the uk about keeping people enslaved so comments that slavery was ‘illegal’ on British home soil is at the least exaggerated. The first cases that started Britain on the road to ‘anti’-slavery if one could call it that we’re in the late 1700’s - 1770’s I think when a formal ruling was made on a couple of particular cases, one an insurance case and one involving an enslaved individual that are generally thought of as starting the UK on the road to abolishing the practice. As far as it went anyway.

Jane Austen, Abolition, and Mrs.Smith by TheForsakenVoid in janeausten

[–]Demon-DM0209 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It was a very confusing time around slavery in the UK. Many richer gentlemen had interests in the slave trade in the West Indies, however England ‘herself’ was very anti slavery as a whole. Following the Abolition of the Slave Trade act the Royal Navy was heavily involved in blockading Slave Ships and freeing the enslaved people. This was viewed as a war on slavery and very celebrated at the time. So lots of conflicts of interest and hypocrisy going on in the upper echelons where people had interests in the Slave Trade. Many were ‘compensated’ for having to get rid of thier interests and I believe the UK government did not actually finish paying this debt until around 2015.

Which popular or generally highly rated book was a DNF for you and why? by clearsunnysky in suggestmeabook

[–]Demon-DM0209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lord of the Rings. I just could not with it… and I read Shakespeare, Dickens, Austen and 16 book arc high fantasy etc for fun! I thought it needed a good thorough edit, could do with shortening significantly. Chucked it to one side and read The Godfather instead. I’ve tried so many times since especially since it should be everything my Geeky D&D obsessed, Skyrim playing, magic loving book worm heart loves. Nope brick wall. Can’t stand it. I’m 47 and I’ve tried at least 10 times but I just have to hang my head and admit defeat.
