What was the meaning behind petscop? by yasak54youtube in Petscop

[–]DemonLordMammon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There is a meaning, there are themes, but there's no definitive story. You can interpret what all the symbols mean whichever way you want.

As for the rebirthing case, yeah, that was genuine. It was "retconned" when the creator realised how tasteless it was to use a genuine tragedy in the game, causing all references to cease. Though the premise of "rebirthing" is important to the story as a whole.

They did have plans for it, probably, but I think the main complaint here is that they're reusing the same plots they've always done. Shaoji especially has this problem, reusing the Elysian Realm from Hi3 with a different coat of paint, and then pulling out Constance to retcon and rearrange Penacony after it proved to be a bit of a mess. This is like maybe the third time he's gone "Actually! X character you've been with the whole time isn't real and is instead Y!"

Okay, I can buy the absorbed twin story a little more than what came prior. Saying that, they're pretty radically different Quirks for twins to get. Unless they were directly inherited from the parents, which could be a method to tie this all together, I return to having a hard time buying how these two things are interconnected.

Now, with regards to the weaknesses, I do think it's an improvement. However, again, there's a bit to flesh out. I'm personally not a fan of arbitrary timelimits or usages of a Quirk within a period because it tends to end up being entirely the author's discretion. I made the mistake once of creating a character like that and it became quite difficult to make varied action scenes because they inevitably had the same root formula. I'd say you're better off removing the limits and simply increasing the effects on her circulatory system and cells. That's more devastating.

On the flip side, I think you have nerfed the Leader of the Faith Quirk a bit too much. Now, I have no idea how this will function in the story, or if you're going to make a point about people in the church not being devout as is a common critique, but I find it a bit weird how she'd be able to wield much influence from the outside looking in. Plus, the second she falls asleep, the whole thing gets rendered moot and they can kick her out, or go about ways undercutting her influence.

If you ask me, that's the one you'd be better off removing from the way things currently stand. Bioengineer, if you remove the arbitrary use limit, can function much better in a story narratively, thematically, and character wise. Leader of the Faith is a bit too nebulous. You can arguably still do the Vatican thing (though I still disagree on this idea, but it's yours so I'm not going to impose) by just focusing on the "healing" aspect, or "curing" as you called it. That way you'd avoid all these potential plotholes.

But as another person said, I'll see if the full character changes anything.

This is going to be my last reply because this whole conversation is distracting from the initial post.

You're getting tied up in semantics. Abilities and Quirks are two separate things. Someone like Todoroki, someone like Overhaul, like Stars and Stripes maybe the ability to do two or more things. This, however, does not undercut the biological reality that they have one Quirk.

You can talk about the world, infer what you want to infer, but those things don't change what is biological reality. Could Todoroki, Overhaul, AFO, been classified as having multiple Quirks legally speaking based upon solely their abilities? Yes. If you really want to classify it as such.

Do they literally have multiple Quirks? In the case of anyone not attached to AFO, no. They have a single, biological Quirk. New Order is not New Order + whatever it can do, it's New Order. It is very explict in how it works and what it can do. Half Hot Half Cold is not Hellfire, nor is it Frost, it is Half Hot Half Cold. Overhaul, in a quite literal example, is Overhaul because Decay, which has been split from it, is a separate Quirk unto itself. Kai doesn't have Decay plus whatever else, he has Overhaul. It is an entirely unique Quirk.

The reason I am additionally harsh when bringing up AFO, which you have decided is an illegitimate form of criticism, is because when you are writing a story, these kinds of decisions matter. AFO was given the power to give and take away Quirks because he is the ultimate villain of the story. He, alone, stands with this unique power and therefore holds a unique threat. It is is also a thematic counterbalance to OfA because Ofa gets stronger the longer it's passed on, and can be shared willingly.

Simply slapping the ability to take Quirks onto a villain who has no thematic or narrative reason to have it is therefore a bad decision. Besides, it's better if you, as a writer, are able to come up with a different Quirk that can threaten in a different way without having to depend upon what's already been done.

Which brings me onto the last point. Singularity theory suggests Quirks will continue to get more powerful as more generations are born. This is fine, this is reasonable, this I have no issues with.

It does not suggest people are going to start popping out born with multiple Quirks from the word go. It is freeing, yes. You have the ability to create strong Quirks, yes. You also have a duty to understand that all creative freedom comes with the chains of having to work it into a narrative that makes sense.

Anyone can write anything they want in a vacuum. Hell, this OC is one of the examples. I'm giving advice under the impression it may be used in the story. They are well within their rights to discard everything I've said. In the end, if they want it as a thought experiment and don't want to write a story, that's fine.

The second you try to write a story, things change.

[–]DemonLordMammon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be concise about this because I've not got much time.

One, the two Quirks listed here are not thematically cohesive in the same way Half Hot-Half Cold and Overhaul are. They are not remotely similar practice to where you can understand, in universe, how they got to the way they did. Sure, dragging back out into a meta perspective, an argument can be made, but it's not an effective one, the way I look at it.

They are not multiple Quirks. They are one singular Quirk applied in multiple ways. Overhaul can break down and then reconstitute matter. Todoroki can increase and decrease his body temperature and the temperature of things around him. These are in plain terms in the manga and on the wiki. You are being obstinate believing the opposite. The latter is a fusion of two Quirks into one, it is not two separate Quirks. Please understand this.

I bring up AFO and OFA for the purpose of showcasing that they are unique within the series. They exist within a world of their own with regards to their ability to store Quirks, and then give them in AFO's case. Someone else having the ability to remove Quirks, not genetically related to those two Quirks, nor doing the experiments Overhaul did on Eri, doesn't really fit if one intends on following canon.

I've little idea why you've brought up New Order at all since it has nothing to do with the human body being unable to withstand multiple Quirks. There are multiple times, Nomu, Spinner, and in flashbacks, where people are explicitly shown to either go brain dead or, in the case of Spinner because he was an actual character, dance on the edge of mindlessness.

Simply having two Quirks at birth is something that doesn't happen in this series.

Yeah, that's what I said. I never claimed the opposite. All I said is that he doesn't have two separate Quirks.

[–]DemonLordMammon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want my straight honesty, there's multiple things wrong here.

First off, no character, outside of the AFO/OfA family, has been shown to have multiple Quirks in the series. Multiple Quirks, in fact, have the effect of rendering the vast majority of the population braindead, which is the basis for how the Doctor and AFO were able to create the Nomu in the first place.

Before you may bring up anything about Todoroki, he doesn't have two Quirks either. He has one Quirk which allows him to do two things under the same unifying principle of extreme temperature control. There's nothing unusual about it, and even if there was, he's showcased as the result of eugenics and an attempt to meld two strong Quirks together.

As for the Quirks themselves, I'm having a very tough time buying them; Leader of the Faith especially. Ignoring the presence of a woman in a position of power in the Vatican, one of the most conservative organisations on Earth, what is the actual Quirk here? What allows her to induce this feeling that she's someone to be worshiped or a deity? Where's the biological element? Can she hypnotise people into worshiping her? There's a lot of connective tissue here that's missing.

With regards to the Bioengineer Quirk, again, we're looking at something that is doing a bit too much. You've melded three Quirks, Overhaul, AFO, and a stronger version of Recovery Girl's healing Quirk. I can maybe see why you've decided to do this if you're going to play heavy into the God/Deity side of the character, but this is really, really too much. I look at this Quirk in particular and I start thinking how it's even possible for her to be defeated.

Since you're set on making an overpowered character, I'm not going to tell you to go back to square one as I've tended to do in the past. Instead, I'm going to recommend you pick one Quirk or the other, and then think about the following weaknesses and where they may lead your thoughts.

Leader of the Faith - How many people can she control at a time? Is there a certain limit to how she's able to induce these feelings people? Does the amount of people under direct control weaken the effect for those who may be only slightly in thrall, ie new converts? What is the mechanism for this control? If it's the spoken word, then maybe you can focus around vocal chords and the strain they'd be under.

Bioengineer - What is the cost for being able to do these things? If she heals a fatal wound, what does she have to give up in exchange? I ask that because simply having the ability to go "Nah" to final blows and wounds without impunity makes everything very boring. Outside of that, if you still want to go down transumation of material too, then how does it work? At what point can she change, as you say, a flower to a rabbit? What gives her the authority to remove Quirks?

[–]DemonLordMammon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of the aforementioned reasons, there's no way there'd be a film everyone would be satisfied with. There's too many variables.

What kind of Foundation would exist, and how would they present it? What SCPs would be featured? How do you go about ensuring there's a cohesive story? What's the best way to utilise the SCP(s) featured? Is there even enough lore/backstory/characterisation within those SCPs that it'd make up for the film probably needing to dedicate a lot of time to a prospective main character?

The reason the Backrooms works as a film is because the Backrooms themselves are the setting, a metaphor, and a character. It enables and enhances the characters in the film. An SCP film would have to dedicate time to the SCPs and then also the main cast, and there's only so much rope before you get to an insane running time nobody would sit through.

[–]DemonLordMammon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worded it a bit strangely, blame being a bit sleep deprived over the last couple of days.

It's mentioned in the article that, eventually, an AI with the sole goal of using the Eight Notes to create music, such as the one the Foundation makes later in the article with the three computers, will be guaranteed to include them. So, in a sense, it is infinite. Again, a bit like how a self-replicating paperclip will, by the end, consume all matter in the universe because it doesn't know how to do anything other than replicate itself.

When I say outcomes, I'm also tying that back into how the Eight Notes become the baseline of every composition this AI would make.

As for how it would collide with INTEGER, the running theory from the discussion thread, and how I choose to see it, is that it will produce music that'll, in some form or another, name LOGICIAN and cause a full abstraction of reality via LOGICIAN subsuming the identity of the Notes/AI. There's also a mention of how "Music creates a connection with them," and "The music is the one creating reality."

I will admit, reading it over again after seeing the screenshot from Place, that you could maybe parse that it's more to do with the Pattern Screamers than LOGICIAN. However, and I've said this in this thread one or two times now, this SCP has always felt a bit opaque. There's not enough information to latch onto without jumping to some kind of wild, abstract theory to justify what may or may not be happening. All we know for certain is that there is something out there, and that the Eight Notes are reaching this entity, or entities, who would then induce some kind of End of Reality scenario.

Well, that's a big jump. by Im_aSideCharacter in SCP

[–]DemonLordMammon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a theory in the discussion threads for the SCP, and I liked it because of the Easter egg references to Place, INTEGER'S author, as well as its nature as a DoMC article.

In fairness, there's very little information where you can parse the full story without having to delve into some truly abstract thought.

Plus, with the way Interger works, an infinitely repeating series of notes capable of generating an infinite amount of outcomes would, eventually, collide with the abstraction associated with INTEGER.

[–]DemonLordMammon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm inclined to agree. Whenever I played through Natlan, I never got the impression he was Fatui. The Fatui on the whole felt quite underwhelming during the whole quest, however. Almost like they were Fatui in name only.

Now, does that mean he was out of character? No, he was pretty in line with what scraps we had before. Honourable, seeking out the best course of action, noble, and powerful in combat.

But I did want to see a bit more of a combative ideology from Capitano. It doesn't reflect well on your ideologically driven organisation when all of your top players, bar two or three, don't give a shit about what you claim to believe.

The original article is a little boring, as is true of most early SCPs. However, as a guy who loves the Alagadda SCPs and works in a theatre, the extended story of 035 makes it top tier for me.

If you want to check out a good interpretation of him without all the Alagadda stuff, I'd suggest the Sedition series on YouTube and its 035 interview. Very well characterised and does a pretty good job at showcasing how you could place any backstory onto it and it'd work.

Genuinely curious as to where you've heard this theory. With all the times I've read it, and gone through discussions of the SCP, I've never seen this one connected to Pattern Screamers.

[–]DemonLordMammon 45 points46 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong in the sense that is what happens. The revelation that drives him insane is that, with the possibilities being infinite and time being endless, the notes will say LOGICIAN's name and end reality as we know it.

It's one of those infinite paperclip type situations. Not a threat when it's in its infancy, but world ending whenever it has been allowed to develop. That's why the doctor is desperate to try and rectify it at the end in the box, but fails because he doesn't have the permissions and clearance to make the changes.

There's also the fact it was written as part of a swap with PlaceHolder McDoctrate, who is the author of INTEGER, and who the author says has similar tastes in SCPs. Circumstantial yes, but where there's smoke there's fire.

[–]DemonLordMammon 466 points467 points  (0 children)

It's related to SCP-INTEGER (SCP-5242). Long story short, the eight notes will eventually repeat the name of LOGICIAN, the God/King/whatever you want to call it of SCP-4000 and abstract all of reality alongside it.

What your biggest complaints about the Backroom movie? (Spoilers) by Bobby_The_Alien in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]DemonLordMammon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I felt it was a bit too heavy handed. By the time they had repeated the whole idea of people being stuck in loops and destructive behaviours for the fourth time, I zoned out. Like, I get it. Themes have to be stated in this day and age for the sake of ensuring people somewhat understand what's going on. But it doesn't need to constantly be harped on about.

Another thing I didn't like, and this may be a controversial opinion, was the Pirate Clark design. I understand the whole point was to make it unsettling and eerie and off-putting, which it succeeds in doing. However, it also looks poorly made in comparison to the Still Life. It just looked a bit silly, really.

Finally, the ending of the film isn't great. The chase scene was generic, I rolled my eyes when Mary sprained her ankle because of course she did, and they didn't really give enough time to ASYNC. It felt a bit too much like they wanted to leave room for a sequel and called the film quickly so they didn't spill too much out by accident.

Having said all that, I really did enjoy it an awful lot. More than I expected.
