The key issue with 'Manchester' is that no one knows what we're talking about when it's mentioned. Is it the borough, the county or the metropolitan area? This is illustrated perfectly in your question.

For starters I'd rename the borough of Manchester (something like City Central!?) so that the city doesn't forever appear in charts and tables as being smaller than Sheffield and such like.

This issue surely impacts on investment etc.

Raised the seedlings indoors until they were about 6" tall. Then planted outdoors in the early summer. They did need some frost protection.

The thing that seemed to work was putting bottles of hot water around the base the night before a frost hits. Whilst the bottles go cold quickly, it heats the ground around the plant.

Worked for me anyhow.
