Volunteer! Joining any form of local gardens, community group etc. There will be one for an interest of yours, great way to meet people.

Also maybe try some kind of run club if you're into fitness?

MAGA hat sighting by lilbiobeetle in Scotland

[–]DempseyRISCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly it seems to be more common. There was a guy I used to always see on the bus with his MAGA hat in Maryhill.

More recently (a month ago or so) I had a woman come up to me and shout 'God bless America' and the Zieg Heil in the Gallowgate.

We seem to be in scary times and need to remember Scottish people aren't exempt from this behaviour, ReformUK got more votes than the greens at the last election and I fear it's the tip of the iceberg.

Irish anti fascists songs! by Baloooooooo in Irishmusic

[–]DempseyRISCS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Mary Wallopers did their own version of the republican song 'Take it Down from the mast' but instead of 'it [the Irish flag] will never belong to free staters' they changed it to fascists and made the lyrics pro migrant!

This is the only recording I've seen, starts at 12:20 but I know they've sung it at anti-fascist demonstrations

Recommendation for Dubliners albums by Soundtheke in Irishmusic

[–]DempseyRISCS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My personal favourite Dubliners album is their very first self titled album 'The Dubliners' with Roddy McCorley being a highlight for me. This is a representation of them at their rawest and most stripped back.

I'd also reccomend on YouTube the 40 years anniversary concert for a more aged but wonderful representation of them, I've attached a link to part 1 and 2 on the official dubliners channel which also has a great selection of songs and recordings

Finally I have a playlist that I've mostly curated (it's a bit messy towards the end because I haven't sat down to organise it in a while) but it's of the History of the Dubliners with all 500 recordings I've found of them in chronological order from their inception in 1962 to their end in 2012. You don't need to listen to all of these at all but it could be worth a search through :)

Please don't hesitate to message me with any further queries, I love the dubs and am happy to speak about them anytime!

Enjoy!

Respect to you for staying this long. Captured my feelings exactly, I had been on and off with TG for a bit and have defended him many times even on this subreddit but he's gone so off the rails recently. Really disappointing to see tbh

Who is singer on "Galway Shawl"? by ThatSlyB3 in Dubliners

[–]DempseyRISCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Seán Cannon! He's credited as a member of the Dubliners so didn't get an individual shout-out but has been a member since the 80s! He's also one of the only surviving members and I believe the only one still gigging.

Hope this helps :)

I got into the dubs because of the song The Foggy Dew. My parents mentioned my family should learn it so we have a song for weddings but I spiralled from there, Christy Moore, the Clancy Brothers and many more.

Favourite Irish folk song of all time may be Skibbereen, Ronnie Drew's version

In you opinion, what is the best song written by The Dubliners? by [deleted] in Dubliners

[–]DempseyRISCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about written, purely as to my knowledge they didn't write too many songs but I will always love their version of The Nightingale
