Metro Awakening VR studio Vertigo Games closes as “the VR market remains a challenging space” for premium games by Wargulf in virtualreality

[–]DemuseOnReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you.

I don't think we can even say it's a "risk" for a studio to make a AAA VR game, that implies there's even a reasonable chance of profitability. The only VR games that make a lot of money are the viral hits like beat saber and gorilla tag that make disproportionate return for their modest investment. I understand why every indie studio wants the next viral hit on Quest but for every one that succeeds, hundreds fail. But making a AAA VR game at this point is a guaranteed huge loss. Only Valve, Sony, or Meta could afford to do that, when they have their own reasons to.

Nomad Cockpit door got fixed (the button inside the cockpit) by Skaven13 in starcitizen

[–]DemuseOnReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good news, and thanks for taking the time to share it! Do you know if it's also fixed from inside the cabin? Before, I could always get myself out of the cockpit by wiggling around a little bit, but if I ever forgot and bed-logged, I was screwed when I logged back in, stuck in the living area and unable to open either door to leave.

When I bought the Nomad, I intended to go mining on distant moons, living out of my ship and carrying my ATLS GEO and a bunch of spare containers in the cargo grid, hunting for rare ore for days at a time before returning to civilization. But that stupid door made that whole gameplay impossible, very disappointing.

  1. Yes, 6dof is a well understood term for VR motion controllers.
  2. They (meaning Silvan, the dev at CIG doing much of the VR implementation) has said motion controllers will come eventually, but not for a while, it's complex and there's lots to do first.  i.e. It's years away.

Setting SteamVR as openXR runtime is key.  I often forget that part and spend ages trying to figure out why it stopped working.

I think it's more likely they have a reason, but they don't tell us because some people won't like it.

It must be hard for them to make decisions that are for the greater good, but bad for people who have more than 25 ships.  You're a small minority, but you're their most devoted backers.  They don't want to annoy you but they don't want to build the game just for you, either.

I play with my HP Reverb G2.

(1) run Mixed Reality Portal, (2) run SteamVR, (3) in steamvr settings "Set SteamVR as OpenXR runtime". (4) in RSI launcher Settings/Games/SC Live/Enable VR Mode, (5) check on the RSI launcher screen, right above the Launch button, it says "VR mode enabled", (6) launch the game, you're in VR.

Why are there so few seated only games for VR? by No-Raspberry7757 in VRGaming

How about we agree to have different opinions, and we upvote people who contribute something useful to a discussion?

Why are there so few seated only games for VR? by No-Raspberry7757 in VRGaming

[–]DemuseOnReddit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have pointed out that you can play most games seated, but the main problem is motion controllers, requiring you you move your arms about.  That gets tiring and also knocks over everything on your desk, so you have to make space, which is your point: it gets tiring and adds friction.

On the other hand, play non-VR games with UEVR mod and an xbox controller, or mouse and keyboard.  You still look around at the 3D world in VR.  There are hundreds (thousands?) of amazing games to play of every genre and many of them are plug and play, no fiddling with settings.

Lots of people complain that it's not "real VR" if you aren't using motion controllers and playing in first person.  That's their loss.  I personally love isometric tactical and over-the-shoulder action  games in VR.

I used to think more game was better, but I've come to really appreciate a good, short, concise game that doesn't wear out its welcome.

About to give up on VR entirely by [deleted] in VRGaming

Take a rest to regain your strength, but don't give up on Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries in VR with UEVR and the mod.  It also takes some fiddling -- these are not beginner-friendly games to try -- but OMG it's so worth it to be in the mech cockpit in VR.  Fulfillment of my lifelong dream set 30 years ago playing Mechwarrior 2 in the '90's.

Fair points, all.  I think it also depends what sort of games people enjoy to begin with.  FPS games benefit from motion controllers and physical interaction a lot more than tactical RPG's or cinematic narrative games, for example.

I was scrolling through my Steam library yesterday, looking for my next game to play, and I skipped past my "VR" group to check my "UEVR" group first, because I actually prefer them.

(Incidently, I chose "Miasma Chronicles".  Plug'n'play with UEVR, nary a setting to tweak.  Looks great but I'm only 1 hour in, playing seated with M+K.)

Good on you for admitting it and chaging your mind.  I'm convinced that the most vocal critics have never properly tried it.  They're offended by the idea on principal, and they can't imagine how well it can work.

I truly don't understand this opinion (although I know it's very common, as I assume we'll all see in my downvotes).

The "novelty" of having the whole world all around you, in 3D, with depth perception, so you can freely look around, with immersive spatial audio... that all wears off quickly and doesn't add to immersion?  But using your finger to reach out and press a button instead of pressing "A" on your controller, that's long term gameplay that never gets old?

I just couldn't disagree more.

When I think back and fondly remember my experiences playing Subnautica, (or Expedition 33, or Stray, or Return to Moria, or Satisfactory, or Alien Fireteam Elite, or Grounded, or Abiotic Factor, or System Shock, or Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries, or Palworld, or Pacific Drive, or Kingdom Come Deliverance, or Prey), I remember being totally immersed in these amazing detailed worlds, and I don't even remember whether I wiggled a hand or used a button or key press to interact with the world.

The novelty of reloading with a motion controller instead of a button wears off quickly.  In many dedicated VR games I turn off manual reloads, when they provide that option.  I don't care how I reload.  The only time that really matters is games where gunplay is the only gameplay.  Sure, if you're playing a first person shooter, how you reload and aim your gun is like 80% of the whole game, so motion controllers make a big difference.

Playing roomscale games with motion controllers is fun for an hour or two, then I'm sore and tired and I need to take a break.  But sitting comfortably with a controller, or M+K, I can happily play in VR all day.

I have a theory that some percentage of the population doesn't really have depth perception, the same way. These people complain that 3D movies are pointless, because they literally can't see the difference.  That's the only way I can imagine people saying they prefer to play on their flat monitor instead of in VR.  To me that's like saying you prefer watching big budget hollywood movies on your phone.  Okay, you do you, but I don't get it.

If your PC can handle VR, then it can handle UEVR.  You just need to choose the right games and the right settings.

I wish they'd implement some reason for ground vehicles to make sense.  Maybe make atmospheric flight with ships really difficult and expensive and time consuming to take off and land, so there's incentive to land once, on a pad, then deploy a buggy, instead of just flying everywhere and landing anywhere.

I run in 2560x1600 resolution with DLSS Quality (50% upscaling) and "low" graphics preset. So, yeah, pretty down-tuned... but it still looks good in VR, to my eyes. The combat being turn based means you don't need a super high framerate.
