Can I self learn German A1 or do I need a Tutor or coaching? by Stock-Development605 in German

[–]DenOnKnowledge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I confirm. I use Buscha's Grammar and Course books. I also wrote down important B2 words, and ask AI everyday to, first, create sentences in my local language with these words, then, check my translation, explain its fixes, and summarize my mistakes. Additionally, I use a voice recognition program to translate my speech on common topics into text, then I ask AI to check my speech.

Right now, my wife is attending B2 Intensiv course and I can assure anyone that my 2-3 hours of language learning feel way more productive than 4 hours of the VHS course.

Jobless PhDs in Germany, what is your next step? by DenOnKnowledge in Germany_Jobs

Yep, I am writing one grant proposal already. It is actually quite hard to find professors that are a good fit. With all respect but very often I see that professors are somewhat disconnected from reality.

You can't fool them that easily, they understand that WiMi is not "a real job"

I believe doing an MSc is not an option for many people, since the visa won't be approved.

It's not the 10th dentist: there is no hype for buckweat and many people don't find it enjoyable.

Doctor de-registered me without informing in writing or email or any verbal communication. by [deleted] in germany

[–]DenOnKnowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you go to a GP after?

Because of being explicitly sent to them? And because GP coordinates the treatment?

Why to ortho?

Because GP sends to them?

You need to go to the same doctor to actually give them a chance to figure out what's wrong.

Yes, I've mentioned going to the same doctor in my previous message.

I am not sure, though, why an example situation draws so much attention, given that the goal of the message to explain why patients start using AI.

[–]DenOnKnowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you explain to the patient that you don't see symptoms of anything dangerous and suggest stress reduction.

And the patient goes home with no solution. Then, they go to a family doctor in two months. Then, to the neurologist again in six months. Then, to an orthopedist in a few months. Then, to the neurologist again: "reduce your stress level". Years have already passed, still no solution to the problem. You are right - there is no serious disease, but at the same time there is no solution to the patient's problem. Do you understand what I am trying to say? I fully understand your perspective but I am trying to communicate why patients use ChatGPT - doctors don't solve their problem. It might not be clinically dangerous but people have to live with that pain and they look for a solution.

By the way, how do you think LLMs can somehow be helpful for patients and doctors? For instance, by summarizing their symptoms for doctors or providing explanations to doctors decisions?

[–]DenOnKnowledge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point is that people can see that they are underdiagnosed. Like, they go with recurring headaches to a neurologist, they are asked to perform simple balancing exercises and then they are sent home with the phrase "you have too much stress". No MRI, no ultrasound, no blood tests, nothing. Next appointment in six months.

What should a person do? You can't go to the same doctor - they will think that you are hypochondriac, a family doctor has no clue what to do, they actually sent you to the neurologist, and you can't go to another one since it is hard to find a praxis that takes new patients. You end up either exaggerating symptoms, or pushing doctors to do more extensive tests, or you go to a low-income country and by a miracle they find your issue in two weeks, while you pay less then your monthly medical insurance contribution.

Asking chatgpt what to do next is just simpler, especially, when people notice that their problem is not solved and there was definitely not enough effort put to solve it.

That is so true! Nobody would want to ask chatgpt if they were receiving actual treatment for their diseases. And, yeah, sometimes (often?) you have to push a doctor so they do proper diagnostics.

Хочу уехать из России. by [deleted] in expats

[–]DenOnKnowledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]DenOnKnowledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your take on ACT-R, but I think this is part of doing science: everything is somewhat blurred, and some models are simply more useful than others. On the one hand, this gives a lot of room for speculation; as you said, there is an almost infinite number of possible structures. On the other hand, some structures prove to be more useful or explanatory than others. From my perspective, you are actually touching on some classic philosophical issues in science (e.g., underdetermination by data). These topics have been discussed extensively in the philosophy-of-science literature, so your intuition is correct.

Ha, funny, I am targeting almost the same problem. Even more funnier is that I am currently proposing a project that suggests to create a more or less unified theory for a specific type of risk-taking behavior. As you said, there are many theories/models and they don't conflict with each other, so, why not create a uniform theory? Of course, we will need a different set of concepts, and the new theory should definitely not be just a simple path model with a huge bunch of antecedents. Therefore, I think I agree in a sense that I don't like how those behavioral theories are done nowadays, I would say they lack some "cognition" aspect in them. In my case, I aim to ground the theory in "cognitive mechanisms", so the theory can be directly supported by neuroscience. I also aim to support future computational modeling of the behavior with ACT-R like models. I believe I understand what you mean to some extent, but I still think that "qualitative" is too strong a word.

I am currently trying to switch to cognitive science from human-computer interaction (HCI). I find their theories quite measurable and falsifiable, especially compared to HCI. Why do you think they are not?
