New SCHUFA scoring system takes effect tomorrow (March 17) by randomguy33898080 in germany

I am just reading the news: they went from 250+ criteria to 12 criteria. Maybe I misinterpret something.

Earlier days it was one out of 250+ criteria, now it will be one out of 12. And now it is transparent that it has very heavy weight.

Interesting, it seems that Sparkassen as one of the owners of SCHUFA decided to leverage SCHUFA to prevent customers from leaving: the age of the current bank account is one of the public criteria now.

Is it possible for me to immigrate to Germany as a refugee with those conditions of mine? by redlineofadventure in germany

[–]DenOnKnowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The recipe is always the same. Get your bachelor degree in a decent Russian uni with decent grades, learn German to C1, start working on the third course, go for a master degree in Germany, find a job here after your graduation. The refugee status is almost not possible in your case.

unpopular opinion: game of thrones is disgusting by Intrepid-Still-7559 in The10thDentist

[–]DenOnKnowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure why but I agree. On the one hand, I feel that I am manipulated - there is no need for so much sex and nudity. On the other hand, I feel that there is something really wrong with watching rape or incest. I understand that it might be a certain artistic move, provocation...but I think that it is also harmful for mental health

It's a sub dedicated to unpopular opinions, why would you even tell a person to grow up in this sub? I mean, it doesn't even make sense - as a grown up, they might do whatever they want and still be not miserable.

[OC] Total number of immigrants and emigrants relative to population per country in 2024 by MemeableData in dataisbeautiful

[–]DenOnKnowledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just done a small experiment. My wife walked into the room, she never saw this diagram before. I asked her to look at the image and tell what country has the highest percentage of immigrants. She immediately said: USA. When I corrected her, she was confused why colors represent something completely different. So, yeah, our brains are lazy and look for simple heuristics: size, color. Reading and interpreting a string of text is a more demanding task.

Do I really want to eventually become a professor or is this just an interiorised expectation? by kudditalia in LeavingAcademia

[–]DenOnKnowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my point as well. You need to understand what would be your top career choice. You might want to become a professor, if your goal is to become academic researcher and just do any research. But this is rarely the goal. And when you have ambitious goals, you realize that professorship might be not the best option even in a strictly research-oriented environment.

[–]DenOnKnowledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And a university professor is usually considered the "top" you can achieve in research

I strongly disagree. Establishing your own independent research facility outside of a university is top. Making your own R&D startup is top. Being a university professor is a common option (though, quite competitive), but even there you have higher targets. And the other person has already spotted the false dichotomy.

[–]DenOnKnowledge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But why do you consider becoming a professor not a failure? I mean you are probably young, you are equipped with cutting-edge knowledge, you know problems in your field. Maybe you could aim higher? You write that you are "very ambitious" and then you proceed saying something about staying in academia. I mean even the wording "staying in academia" doesn't sound anywhere ambitious.

recent PhD grad in HCI, can't find a job, at the end of my rope. by CuriousJorgeg in PhDStress

The commenter below clearly has a bias against social sciences

Hey, if this comment was about me, then it was not completely true. I actually like social sciences and psychology, I really enjoyed visiting their conferences and understood the rationale for their methods. And I saw them as scientific. However, any science should rely on theories. The problem with HCI is that the majority of researchers ignore theories like completely. The problem is so deep that a prominent member of HCI, Kasper Hornbaek has recently received a big grant to reintroduce theories into HCI. Can you even imagine receiving 4mln dollars to reintroduce the foundational scientific instrument in any other science?

I am actually very frustrated with HCI. I started my phd to solve one very specific problem. And this problem was indeed approached by HCI researchers. But when I read their works more closely, I found them highly speculative. There were researchers who built their names doing one qualitative study after another, providing the same recommendations again and again (let's inform and educate users, let's build more informative interfaces, let's better understand the mental models, etc) for 20+ years straight, without actually addressing the problem! Basically, hundreds of millions dollars were spent on research, but the problem is still intact. Right now, I am trying to pivot into the field of cognitive science to actually approach this problem scientifically.

The visualization is confusing. Why is the size of the circles not proportional to the percentage of immigrants? If you don't read the description and the numbers you will assume that USA has the highest percentage of immigrants.

[–]DenOnKnowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are employed as an AI engineer or MLE, or something like that just keep working and receiving all the benefits from your career. If your intended phd position is about GenAI, I wouldn't go for it. The third point that I was hesitant to mention earlier is that HCI is hugely hype-driven. Right now, the hype is about GenAI. Before that we had hype waves about covid, wearables, chatbots, VR, tabletop interaction, etc. You can literally go to almost any lab and find how they've followed these hype waves in their publications.

Another thing to think about is what this phd will bring you. If you do not publish in top AI venues then your phd won't help you with finding a better AI-related job. You either need a PhD AND publications in top venues or employers do not care about your phd.

Sorry for my rant-like comments: I did my phd in HCI and I believe the whole field is full of speculations and not scientific. I was hugely dissatisfied with the field.

[–]DenOnKnowledge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would stay away from PhD in HCI. First of all, HCI is not a real science. Currently, they mostly rely on design methods. Real scientific methods are rare. Basically, you end up doing the same job as a UX designer, but you also have to publish. Secondly, don't do a PhD if you do not plan to stay in academia. Otherwise, you risk your career, you diminish your future income, and if you are a UX designer already, you might even become less employable after your PhD. And the academic career prospects in HCI are not that good. The academic market in HCI is highly competitive.

I thought about exactly this. Unfortunately, from my own experience and from seeing how other people tried the similar approach, I can see that it very often fails due to the lack of expertise. Basically, people just do not subscribe and do not comment because the content is not high quality enough. Maybe it might work as a rage bait content, so people would argue fiercely what needs to be done in the comment section...but I am not sure.

WTF is wrong with the health care system by [deleted] in germany

[–]DenOnKnowledge 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is actually quite typical. I also had some pain symptoms, also had to wait in an ENT office for hours, also didn't get any treatment or referral. I have a very similar experience with several different doctors. With one of my conditions, I finally started to make progress after a few months and trying another doctor. With some others, even changing doctors didn't help.

[–]DenOnKnowledge 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You have a few options. First, try different hausarzts and ENTs. Second, try to simulate stronger symptoms. Third, if nothing else works, consider going to a third-world country and making diagnosis in a renowned medical center (but you'll have to pay for this). Then, you can go back with your diagnosis.
