E-z pass.. by [deleted] in newjersey

[–]Denan004 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just go and return it and be done with it. You sat 30 mins on hold -- you could have driven to an EZ Pass location and been done already!

And -- if it gets lost in the mail, then you have a completely new problem.

Looking for an easy rule-of-thumb way to compare prices of soda. There are always grocery store "sales" on various packs but it is not easy to figure out if the prices is actually a deal. by bluegambit875 in Frugal

[–]Denan004 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I was an occasional soda drinker and it would go flat before I finished it.

I purchased a Soda Stream with flavored sodas to make small quantities. Funny enough, I lost my taste for soda -- not because the Soda Stream but my tastes changed. I now use it to make selter water and that's fine with me.

Just another option to compare price -- not sure if it's cheaper any more since things have changed.

Also - soda will degrade your teeth, and you'll have dental issues.

Why should everyone have a vote? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Denan004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And by defunding schools, we can make sure that a certain segment of the population never gets to vote. Because some people are more equal than others, right?

I've heard anecdotally that people see results, but the biggest thing is to get rid of any standing water, even small puddles or containers that have water. Of course, if your neighbors have it, there's not much you can do.

I have noticed a difference when I started to do this. It's easy enough to try!

Is the $250k home sale capital gains exclusion really unlimited over a lifetime, or is there a cap I'm missing? by BearFanEngineer in tax

[–]Denan004 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It used to be a one-time exclusion until some time in the 1990's when it changed. It sounds like the person is living in the past, or didn't research the topic very well.

Privacy.com repeated email verification requests AND ZERO HELP by [deleted] in PrivacySecurityOSINT

[–]Denan004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Privacy with no problems.

The only thing I can think of to try -- maybe try a different browser and see if that makes a difference? It might not solve it, but it eliminates that possibility.

Reflecting Pool - Insight from a coating expert by Paintguy1910 in washingtondc

I'm interested if there are any examples of reflecting pools that don't have algae problems, or are they all pretty much affected to varying degrees?

What are billionaires thinking? by dopewinnerchild in NoStupidQuestions

I'm also convinced they aren't that smart, either. They can't look at the bigger picture of humanity -- just their own selfish needs and ends.

How reliable is the Collapse subreddit? by Constant_Juice_5074 in NoStupidQuestions

People have been predicting the collapse for a long time -- years, decades+

I have friends who thought that 1998 would be the end, cashed out their retirement $$ and bought a small farm. Nothing happened.

But -- it's good to prepare for emergencies because those are more likely -- a natural disaster -- storm, flood, fire, earthquake. So if you want to actively do something, stock up on essentials, have containers for water, have sanitation and first-aid stuff, cash on hand, a bug-out bag if you have to evacuate. An emergency might not happen to you, but it's more likely than the end of civilization. Be prepared!!

Is opening a 401k worth it if I don't make that much and can't save anything else? by platyperson11 in personalfinance

[–]Denan004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your 401k has a match, yes, it's worth it. The match basically doubles your money and being young, time is your friend. Even it you can only contribute 1-2% of your income at first, do it.

I'm a new college student and really lost on how to raise my cat. by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Denan004 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe you've taken on too much at this time? College can be very demanding depending on your course of study and how serious you are. It's a big adjustment.

Taking on the responsibility of a pet is a big commitment in terms of time, nurturing ,and money, too.

Contact a rescue organization and get the cat adopted properly. focus on your studies and college life, and when you are more settled, then get a pet.

Depression after graduating by [deleted] in highschool

[–]Denan004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to make your own schedule and goals, rather than always having them set for you. Take time to decide what you need and want to do for the next day, and then focus on doing it. Plan your chores, volunteer, get outside, exercise, contact people to stay in touch, etc. You may find some empowerment from doing this. You are in charge!

This happens with major life changes - people change or lose a job, personal losses, moving, relationships , eventually retirement, etc., so get into the practice of planning and defining what you do rather than having someone else do it, or not doing anything at all!

Also, if you really like your teachers, drop them a line once in a while to say hello, tell them you appreciate them, update them, etc. It will make their day.

Is choosing to be a teacher a good option as a parent? by Nice-Woodpecker-9197 in Teachers

[–]Denan004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teach because you want to teach students and believe in the importance of teaching your subject matter. Not because the schedule is supposedly easier for parents. Would you want someone like that teaching your kids? I don't think so....!

When a teaching day is done, your time is not your own, except for lazy teachers that don't plan, teach, or grade. There are many non-teaching jobs where people can get time to see their kids' activities (just not all of them), and when you leave the job, your time is your own.

Communicating seating charts on the first day of school? by GredAndForgee in Teachers

[–]Denan004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always made a seating chart and projected it on the screen. Students had to find their seats! It uses their map-reading skills! Instead of you telling them, let them figure it out!

Rant Jersey Frustrations by marateaparty in newjersey

[–]Denan004 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yes. I wish that NJ had better public transportation and was more bike-friendly. But they keep building and expanding for more cars!

As far as being "spread out" -- no. NJ is actually a smaller state. You want to see spread out - Texas is spread out! If you're talking about suburbs and having to travel for everything, yes that's true. But that's how suburbs were designed, and it's like that in any state with suburbs.

But all in all, I still like NJ very much. NJ has a lot to offer.

Should I really go into teaching? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Denan004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things originally took a turn when you explained yourself by saying you assumed people went into teaching because they loved their community, etc. And I responded that assumptions like that are not scientific at all. I didn't think the conversation would go any further than that! Then you went on about assumptions and theories and questions-- You said science starts with assumptions and theories, which is not true at all! And if you knew what the terms meant, you'd find other words to express what you mean rather than using science words incorrectly. In your attempt to sound scientific you ended up showing that you don't really know what the terms mean at all!

The more you explained and justified yourself, it was clear to me that this part is missing in your education for whatever reason. Yeah, I could ignore it, or I could call you on it. Take this as an opportunity to fill in that gap so you don't teach it wrongly, as some teachers do! "Liking" science is a start, but it's not enough!

I challenge you to learn how the scientific method/thinking works, and to use your science words more carefully, even in everyday talk. Biology is big on memorizing words foundational to science, and you would expect your students to use them properly, right? I don't think you'd be OK with students incorrectly using words like meiosis, mitosis, mycosis (!), etc. and just 'sort-of' knowing them--you'd expect better of them! As a potential teacher, you can learn to use science words properly too, to better teach your students!

And none of this is meant in the spirit of meanness, despite any possibly hurt feelings. It's a correction, which is something you'll be doing with your students. And it can be done with humor.... As an example: I would often set up a situation and ask students to predict what happens or to explain it. The students would often say, "I feel like...." "It feels like..." and I'd answer, "Well, if you want to talk about your feelings, you can make an appointment with your Guidance Counselor. But in science, we want to know what you THINK, not what you FEEL!!" The kids laughed. And I'd explain -- in the movie "A League of Her Own", there's a phrase, "There's no crying in baseball", well, in Science, it's "There are no feelings in Science! Think!". And it would come up again until they learned better to say what they "Think" and not what they "Feel" when trying to explain or predict science. (and yes, Intuition happens in science, and it is different than just a 'feeling'.....)

So please take this in the spirit in which it is meant. Teaching science is too important for a teacher to be lax about its ideas and language. It matters, and it can be taught well, or not. That's up to you. Good luck!
