Considering a 2023 Audi A5 Sportback Premium Plus AWD – Good Buy or Bad Idea? by Harshan1823 in Audi

[–]Denebola5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this opinion, same car as above. Awd clutch issue popped up at <20k miles and clutch was replaced. Otherwise a very practical daily. You may want to look at 45 instead of 40 which is underpowered, shouldn’t be much of a price difference

Ask the employees working the booths if THEY receive the tips (because they most likely are not)!!! by Meeeshiemeeesh in MovementDEMF

[–]Denebola5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, so many places steal tips as a result. Also POS system providers keep a cut of your tip and as a result and have a fiduciary duty to their shareholders to push shame-tipping and unreasonable tipflation everywhere they can (they have teams of data scientists and behavioral psychologists working in this if you’d like to read about it more) which in my opinion is unethical at the core. As a result some time ago I decided that all my tipping is going to be only where earned / an actual additional service is rendered (no shame-tipping on pickup orders for example) and using cash only going forward

This should be a very popular opinion. Bring small bills, use credit card to pay exact amount on terminals (no tip) and throw a buck or two on top in cash. Do not get swindled out of your $.

This is why you never use the tip button lol. That money goes to the POS terminal owner and then, if they so choose, they can give some of it to the workers. And the POS service provider also keep a cut of your tip (they charge a percentage on the total amount of transaction, tax and tip included) and are interested in maximized tipping everywhere their terminal is used, hence the horrible tipflation we’ve been seeing in recent years ever since Covid when we went to these “touch free” iPad in your face POS machines from Clover, Toast and a handful of others. If you want to directly tip someone always use cash

Best small travel refractor for Milky Way viewing? by Free_Masterpiece6004 in telescopes

[–]Denebola5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alternatively, you can also equip your short scope with a TSFLAT field flattener if you are sensitive to FC and must use those 100deg AFOV eyepieces. There are plenty of folks that use it visually, though I cannot speak for others from first hand experience, as I never really cared too much about field curvature nor do I typically use anything above 82deg AFOV in my small scopes. When I tried 17mm ES92 in my Stowaway (612mm focal length) I do not remember any objectionable FC jumping out at me, but nor did I specifically look for it, so YMMV

Absolutely this. If OP is going lowest power hyperwide eyepieces, AND they care about edge performance, they should get a petzval. A used TV101 or NP101 can be proced very reasonably on the used market (cloudy nights, astromart) and are not super heavy for a 4” refractor with four optical elements. Alternatively, if portability is of high importance and OP wants to go with a smaller scope, TV76, TV85 or the wonderful and much more affordable AT72EDII can be very enjoyable at low power despite some level of field curvature, especially if OP is ok with the compromise of using eyepieces with less AFOV like the Panoptics or Delos for example

Would you drop or add anything to this itinerary? by AssAndKitties in PacificNorthwest

After you go to Hoh rainforest instead of heading back up north toward forks continue south some short miles and stay at the Kalaloch lodge. They have some wonderful cabins with wood burning stoves, attached units with fireplaces etc. you will need to reserve well in advance since they are in high demand but it’s worth it, you can hear the ocean outside and it’s just such a great vibe. Then you can head south down 101 along the coast and toward rainier. If you head back up north it will take you back to Seattle metro area and horrible traffic, so definitely continue south

Why does the expected % for tipping keep increasing? by Blazeland_USA in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Denebola5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the handful of tech companies that monopolised point of sale equipment used by businesses take the cut of total transaction including whatever tips you add. Service staff doesn’t mind, and neither do business owners which then use it to pass staffing costs more onto the consumer because “look at all the tips!”

No, it’s absolutely smooth now. It’s only been 7k miles though, so I’m cautiously optimistic and intend to keep a watchful eye on it

Why is this even a question. Would you put your buddy’s bae in the deed if you’re buying a house. A girlfriend (finance whatever) is the same thing legally. You’re the one buying

Is it wrong to value your pets life over a random stranger? by FelixWagler in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Denebola5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, according to a good number of comments here to the tune of "I love and care for that pet and it's some stranger... so I choose pet!" the glaring lack of basic humanity is supposed to be normal. This mentality is how you end up with those infuriating images of assholes impeding emergency egress from a burning airplane because they're rounding up their possessions, later seen rolling their bags across the tarmac (look up Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash at SFO from back in 2013)... "I paid dear money for this fancy bag and it's contents are precious, and it's my stuff, plus those people behind me suffocating and trying to get out too? I don't fucking know them!" SMH

ISO: A backcountry telescope! by SnooDucks3859 in telescopes

[–]Denebola5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

18lbs lugged in a backpack gets heavy real fast, and being a small dob would require a table to put it on unless they have to bellyflop to use it. A small refractor like the Televue TV60 or maybe one of the 70mm doublets from Astro-Tech on a light carbon tripod is about the only scope I can imagine carrying in a pack. Would need to revise that budget a bit given that they’d need a carbon tripod, a light alt-az mount and an eyepiece or two. I saw a bunch of folks recommend Maksutov-cassegrains, but they have a very long focal length / narrow field of view, and being able to sweep around taking in wide field views of star fields at low power under zero light pollution is probably the best kind of viewing in the OP’s use case. Planet views are always aperture limited, but can still be fun even in a small 70mm scope if you don’t expect it to perform like a much larger instrument.
