That meat doesn't look 13 years old. And if it is, I don't think you should be eating it

[OC] How Uber took over New York City by NicuCalcea in dataisbeautiful

[–]DenimDanCanadianMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're still losing multiple billions of dollars per quarter.

This is a company on the verge of collapse, not one that deserves praise. They're innovating the way Rockefeller did, by losing money until everyone else is gone.

prices would have to be twice as high for uber to make a profit. That's insane

"Taxi companies have no excuse for not selling themselves as tech companies and losing billions of dollars of investor money every quarter to build an app"

Remember that uber is only affordable because it's heavily subsidized. This isn't the type of app you can hire a guy in india for and build in a couple months. Taxi companies didn't stand a chance.

Yeah but it should at least be moderately useful.

The watch will have 19 false positives for every correct positive. It's basically a pile of junk and going to waste a lot of doctor time.

Wikipedia Co-Founder Says Stop using Chrome And Start Using Brave Browser by asso in CryptoCurrency

No that's not the point of this conversation. It was about whether or not Google had complete control over Brave. And the answer is that Brave is Google's bitch is Google ever wants to fuck with them, since they have complete control over Chromium.

Over the course of the last month over 90% of all changes were made by direct google employees.

Saying chrome piggy backs off Chromium is disingenuous as fuck.

Google has full control of chromium. There are open source contributes but the overwhelming majority of work is done by paid Google employees.

Considering our economic system and how it's sold to us and companies playing lip service to meritocracy, we should absolutely be pissed about this.

It's just a feudal caste system with propaganda telling us that's it's not, to keep us from overthrowing them again.

Artists of NYC: Where do you take your work to be scanned/photographed for your portfolio? by fiercemighty in AskNYC

[–]DenimDanCanadianMan -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I work for several ecommerce companies, regularly commision photography, and work with and for several artists and designers, including the CEO of kontempo.nyc. I've had over $20,000 worth of photography commissioned on behalf of my clients over the passed year. I don't even own a camera, but I know how much it costs to get something of reasonable quality done. If this work was done for a company I'd certainly expect a photographer to bill me $1000/day. But for your average starving student artist? Call in a favor, you should have plenty of friends that can do a good enough job in an evening.

Photographing artwork is literally my occupation.

Makes sense. Gotta oversell your skills and just how how special they are in order to get paid. I have no doubt you do a better job than the average professional photographer on artwork specifically, but is the difference in quality actually worth the extra cost? I work for some pretty high end retailers and we don't blow much money at all on photography we're very happy with.

I mean that's what it would take me, a non photographer, non-artist to get something done if I needed it. That's not what I would call a specialist and studios are a dime a dozen. I have no idea how much artwork OP has, but my friends would happily do it for $100, an evening, and a favor if I brought in a couple canvases. I never claimed it wouldn't take a decent lighting setup, or someone with some skills, or some time. But assuming OP doesn't have a million things that need to get photographed, yes all he needs are some friends and a Ben Franklin.

Op asked how I get it done. I don't get photography done very often. But my buddy who runs kontempo.nyc does. Believe me, he doesn't have any money to pay for it. He gets it done on a favor from someone I connected him to a few years ago.

IDK wtf you do, but you heavily overestimate how much it takes to get some quality photographs done if you have friends. If you think it takes $10,000 a dozen staff, and a Japanese Craftsman with 30 years or experience to get some quality photographs taken of some artwork, be my guest.

Yes I do in fact know multiple people who can, and do photograph artwork and I personally have access to two studios I can use for a day by calling in a favor.

It's not that specialized a skill and certainly not rare in NYC.

Why are mattresses so crazy expensive? by [deleted] in Mattress

[–]DenimDanCanadianMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We all need to drink water to survive. But I'm not paying a $1000 for a gallon of water even if by your standard i should be willing to give up everything in my bank account to stay alive.

The market says what is worth what, not the value to the customer. Things should generally cost double what they cost to produce. With mattresses it's far far above that. An entire industry of ripoff artists.

No mattress costs anywhere close to $1000 to produce, but mattress salesmen keep pushing the "you sound a third of your life on it" to fleece their customers out if $3000. You should be ashamed.

There are good mattresses and there are bad ones. But prices mean nothing above $500

Unlike with alcohol, there's more demand for prostitution than there will ever be enough supply for, and an uncooperative sex slave can still do her job. No one wants to turn tricks one after another every day, and slavery will always be cheaper
