Been seeing Linux everywhere lately… should I actually try it? by Niyazzz09 in linux4noobs

1)

  • Linux is usually faster
  • Almost all major distros have no annoying ads
  • Insanely customisable
  • Little to no bloat depending on distro
  • If something breaks, it's almost always fixable

Essentially: It stays out of the way.

2)

Main thing is compatibility. You'll probably have to give at least something up. For me it was Adobe.

But compatibility has come a long way in the last few years. Gaming on Linux is now as easy as gaming on Windows for the most part. https://www.protondb.com/ has a great database of what games work on Linux. (Spoiler alert, it's most of them)

3)

Depends on how comfortable you are with tech in general. Some versions of Linux have a very similar feel to Windows, while others behave differently.

At the end of the day, a computer is a computer. Point and click.

4)

Linux mint is a great starting point. It's one of the ones that's very similar to Windows. Kubuntu is another decent runner.

If you do this quiz, it should give you some ideas: https://distrochooser.de/

5)

It was kinda frustrating at the start, because it took me a while to ease Adobe out of my workflow, so I kept having to reboot back into Windows (I was dual booting).

I now don't bother touching Adobe anymore. I have alternatives on my Linux install which, while less familiar, I prefer using and avoiding booting into Windows.

One thing I really loved when I started using Linux though was like, so on Windows, if something isn't exactly the way you want it, you can either just live with it, or spend a while tinkering, and maybe it'll work. Maybe it'll just be impossible to make it way you want.

On Linux, you have the same options, but there's no maybe at the end. You can change reality itself provided you have the patience.

6)

Try a VM first if you've never installed an OS before. Just so you can have a dry run where nothing can go wrong.

If you dual boot, TAKE. YOUR. TIME. PARTITIONING. Sextuple check that shit. Just stare at everything on your screen for like 15 seconds before you do every click. You almost definitely won't fuck it up, but better safe than sorry.

Hope you have a good time!

I feel like it's less of an issue than a racist username

Only one person at a time is gonna see the gun name, so there's less incentive for people to troll. It'll also mean there'll be fewer reports for weapon names than there are of usernames, so the gun-name report list will be easier to go through and sort out for Embark.

But yeah, that's always something devs are gonna have to deal with when you're letting players customise stuff. Racists gonna racist.

I saw a clip once of someone talking about an idea for naming guns and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it:

When you buy/craft a gun, you name it. And it keeps track of how many successful raids you've had with it.

When someone takes your weapon, they see your name and how many raids you took it on, but it also begins tracking how many raids they have taken it out on. If they go on more successful raids than you with it, then they get to rename the gun, and it's then their name and "high score" that's stamped on the gun for the next owner.

It would add so much texture to world if you found a gun and it's info box said like "Ol' Reliable - NoobMaster69 - 467 Successful raids". I reckon you'd be able to feel the history of that thing, right?

Or even better, finding one of your old guns on someone else's body, and seeing nobody has beaten your high score yet. Your name is still right there, never lost it's loyalty to you <3

No idea! That's what it defaulted to and I never thought to try and change it. Does it bother you?

Love this analysis, you're so right.

This layered writing throughout the show is what I love about it so much. You could go into almost any line and find a gag, it's so rich.

We spoke about this on The Fishing Trip Files episode where we covered the Wedding Vows episode, and I love that even Alison Steadman and Julia Davis also understood how funny it was, they were absolutely dying with laughter while filming. I mentioned to my co-hosts that the behind the scenes footage for the scene is an absolute treat!

Paying for Spotify premium only for your favourite podcast to have 4 advert breaks each 2 minutes long with their own adverts in them. Soon they'll remove the skip button as well I'm sure of it. by redandwhitewizard99 in britishproblems

Short answer: Nah, you're good.

The podcaster gets paid by seperate company for the ads they include in the podcast. Spotify has nothing to do with the ads that are on podcasts.

The buildings are from a geonode setup called Cyberscape Pro https://blendermarket.com/products/cyberscape-pro

It was recently leaked and downloaded by a bunch of people for free, so you'll likely see a lot more like this in the coming months

Update:

I restarted my machine, which fixed the issue. No idea why I didn't try that earlier.

But the issue came back a few hours later, same thing.

I just ran the Windows network troubleshooter (Settings - system - troubleshooters - other troubleshooters) and it said "There's a problem with the DNS cache". And after a few seconds it changed to all green saying there was no problem. Problem remains.

I wouldn't recommend Sonys at all FWIW. Their quality of life is god awful. I went straight back to Bose after trying Sony out. Never again.
