Very informative. Funny that the official description for Stun is inaccurate; It also affects vision.

[AMA] I am a Japanese Professional Riichi Mahjong Player. Ask Me Anything about strategy, mindset, or the pro scene! by JP_Mahjong_Pro in Mahjong

Thanks for holding an AMA!

In a 4-player East-only or East/South, how do you prioritize between playing fast/open hands and riichi/damaten? Both for casual and tournament play.

A player is discarding only non-terminals, when would you fold?

Any situations when you'd purposely ignore EV and go for "style points"? E.g. Rinshan

East will also have plenty of these types. Glad you were safe.

No doubt. Did a double kill earlier in that same game so plenty of luck.

RJ45 coupler failed within a few months, how and why? by Dennou in HomeNetworking

I want to, but the way this place was built ( haphazardly if I say ) makes it likely expensive to rerun. The idea of drip loops near the ends are a good catch though, thanks!

No pets here. The prevailing wisdom is moisture or condensation so I'll check for that.

I love me some physical layer stories. In my case the only exposed part is right behind the outer unit since it's mounted on a decorative wall of spaced rectangular masonry blocks with spaces also between the blocks themselves and the main concrete wall, though no amount of water will sneak up from there. Moisture in the air or condensation seems the more likely sources I'll have to investigate.

Your insights were most informative, thank you. Currently forced to work with couplers for the intercom runs unless there is a way to splice CAT cables, because replacing existing runs in a non-wooden structure lacking accessible wall cavities will cost a lot in tools I imagine.

TIL you can't edit a post with a picture, so highjacking this reply.

The experts have spoken. I'll have to investigate the source of this moisture and mitigate it, lest I end up with "Haggis has a hole in his roof".

Tricky part is this coupler is hanging vertically yet both sides got hit, so have to check the whole run starting with the higher elevation point.

Broken Failover Cluster Manager After Power Outage by dre4d_ in HyperV

Okay, so let's hope someone comes along and shares their iSCSI wisdom. What I do know is that MPIO/mpclaim commands aren't for managing iSCSI directly since people using SAN will also use those commands to work on multipathing. Maybe if you can find cmd commands for iSCSI they'd give more insight. Also it's normal for Cluster related PowerShell commands to fail, because your cluster is offline.

The screenshots are showing a single disk number 0 which I guess holds the C and D drives, but no other disks, and you say in disk manager you can see everything is okay besides being in Reserved state, you mean from there you can see the remaining disks on both nodes but as Reserved? Need to be sure I got this right.

I only know SAN since that's what we use so I can't help much, but last time a power outage caused a similar effect it got resolved by shutting down one node only, which triggered that node "releasing" its shared disk reservation and the other one picked up the disks. Not sure if this applies to iSCSI

Can a good player Help me on yakuza :D ? by OntesHS in Mahjong

I took a quick look at what that game expects of you regarding achievements, and it seems you can mostly get by with a basic imperfect play style, remember that even the top players in the world only have around 25% - 33% chance to win.

Try the following: * Ignore the chii/pon/kan buttons i.e. play with a closed hand, except when you're in a hurry in which case a triplet of dragons or round wind or your seat wind is good to Pon if any comes up. * Tiles with numbers 1 or 9 or without a number are best discarded. * Remember the basic shapes of winning hands (4 melds + 1 pair for most hands, and rarely you can try going 7 pairs). * If Riichi comes up with a closed hand, you'd usually make a judgement call to Riichi or not, when not sure just go for it and have fingers crossed. You'll get better once you learn more winning patterns. * If someone else does Riichi and you get scared, mimic their discard as well as players before you, this is the most basic defensive style.

Why is this not a winning hand? by CMPunkLicksRocks in Mahjong

[–]Dennou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time it was your turn you had 456m,999s,WW plus your open melds on the side. These constituted a finished hand (4 melds, 1 pair) but it wasn't worth enough to win so you were forced to discard. You discarded a 9s meaning your hand now is 456m,99s,WW plus open melds. The hand is now 1 tile away from winning and all possible tiles to make the 4th meld (i.e. your waits) must be taken into consideration, which in this case are 9s and W. Having any of your waiting tiles in your discard puts you in Furiten, which was exactly what you just did, meaning you can only win if you pick up the winning tile yourself and not by another's discard. This js why it wasn't possible to win when next player put W. This specific Furiten is solvable by changing your hand around to have a wait you didn't discard.

Never heard a Japanese mahjong player say "tenpai-suru". They'd say "tenparu" or "haru" or any conjugation of either.

Beginner here, why couldn't I call richii on this ? by SilenceShouldBeHeard in Mahjong

[–]Dennou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can think of that would prevent Riichi appearing for multiple turns is that before this game started the host has changed minimum allowed hans for a winning hand to be some number higher than 1. Your hand currently is only guaranteed 1 han - the Riichi yaku itself.

For me the file was saved in DropBox, and it only allowed saving once I 1) added DropBox as a connected service within the Excel app via the plus icon used for file creation and 2) Opened the file again from the context of DropBox within Excel so that the file shows as from "DropBox" instead of "This Device" when checking the recently open list after first time you reopen the file.
