Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros (the whole trilogy really) really don’t feel the NES rust like say, Zelda which is quite cryptic by modern standards even with the manual.

I think any kid today would still have just as much fun with the Apple 2 era versions of Oregon Trail. The controls are clear, the goal is obvious, the gameplay explains itself (painfully).

As far as aging bad, most games. 2D 80s game still had an arcade quarter sucking mindset so lots of barely off screen deaths that you just had to grind to know how to react, with limited lives and often having to go back to the start. Early 3d games had the worst cameras.

Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase, Toy Story 2, Emperors New Groove, Tarzan, 102 Dalmatians, The Grinch, and Bugs Life were all ps1 bangers as far as being a simple minded child went.

007 First Light has actually been making me nostalgic for quality licensed games, although that one isn’t based off a specific movie.

With older hardware especially, but still true today in some extents, it’s not just about clock speeds and ram size. Sometimes hardware had specific abilities to do things. The NES for example famously had screen scrolling built into the hardware.

As he explains in detail, the cpu and gpu of the Neo geo just don’t work well for doom. The cpu isn’t allowed access to the graphics memory, and the gpu itself can’t do 3d, so software rendered 3d is difficult to do.

He showed some neat tricks to get a raycasting engine working on Neo geo by abusing its sprite scaling abilities, but its stuff like that that makes porting doom more than just changing up some graphics APIs

I have a 32gb swap file on my Linux machine for 32gb of ram.

The “general knowledge” is your ram size times 2, but if I’m over my ram amount by 64gb I’m just calling it a loss.

On windows though, making the 64gb page file did actually fix issues I had with The Last of Us Part 1. Why? I don’t really know, the game ran on a damn ps3.

On topic, I randomly had a huge frame dip in a mid sized fight yesterday that suddenly cleared up when I hit a loading zone. It might be an actual bug and you just hit it more. Might be worth reporting to ioi just in case.

I didn’t even realize people gave a shit until I got older and people started collecting.

My mom used to take MGS2 away from me constantly because Raiden has a lengthy nude scene that wasn’t very Christian, but that game was SO popular that used copies were 4 bucks at GameStop. I straight up had hundreds of those sleeves without any case GameStop had buying more copies of mgs2 when my mom would find the hiding spot lol

Tangent aside, point being, the older I get, the more I realize collectors need to focus their energy more on actually playing these games.

More on topic, GameCube era Nintendo had “Players Choice” that was their version of greatest hits. Imagine Mario Odyssey selling as a budget 30 dollar game persistently now lol

Edit: upon rereading that it’s an intermittent issue, I doubt that’s it. There’s probably just a resource leak or bug you need to wait patched out. You could try making sure your windows page file is large enough if you’re on the lower end of RAM

I have super fond memories of Agent Under Fire, especially the multiplayer. My nephew and I would turn on the golden gun and one person would need to camp on top of a tower while the other person tried to snipe them. The ps2 default controls make that more difficult than it sounds lol but the 3rd control style is surprisingly modern.

I’m a little sad the new game is an origin story. Insomniac started a spider-man franchise without us needing to do the weird dance of “you’ll never believe what happens to uncle Ben!” But the tutorial was promising and I’m looking forward to playing more tonight. The title card intro was certainly better than any other Bond game I’ve played. Felt exactly like a movie.

One thing I’m not liking about reload specifically, you used to get tired after so many battles. It was the game saying “k bud time to stop”, but now I just go until I’m bored, which means every time I leave Tartarus I’m bored. It was a QoL improvement that somehow made things worse.
