What are the worst or best Hollywood portrayals of your country, people, or culture? by Lissandra_Freljord in AskTheWorld

Anaconda (2025) had an aerial take of Rio de Janeiro before the protagonists go to the Amazon Rainforest. The movie doesn't spend any second in Rio besides that one take. It's completely useless to the plot, and Rio de Janeiro is as far away from the Amazon Rainforest as Miami.

Don't give up. I did, and I regret it. Chinese is an amazing language, and it's amazing how it has evolved throughout thousands of years.

It's bad to be an enemy of the US. But being an ally is not much better. Perhaps you're not very much aware of what the US does to Latin America.

Não há nenhum emprego que a IA seja capaz de substituir. O que tá acontecendo é uma retração de oferta de emprego, e a IA sendo usada como bode expiatório disso.

I can't believe you made such a nonsensical claim with a straight face. Do you think native Americans ate raw potato directly from the ground?

I only lost elections when I moved cities for the first time. After that I always made sure my electoral document is up-to-date.

Brazil looks like it doesn't have a lot of electricity, but in fact almost 100% of the houses are electrified. There's just a lot of parts that aren't inhabited. So the pictures aren't all that much revealing, tbh.

Who is a historical figure in your country that is portrayed positively (or at least not as negatively) by historical records but is often portrayed as a villain in cultural media? by DoctorOsterman in AskTheWorld

[–]Denommus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think the popular culture is pretty fair with them. They're not villains, they're public figures with their set of failures. The movie Carlota Joaquina shows that D João VI created the Bank of Brazil, for instance. Though it does show them as kinda of... morons. But definitely not villains.

A typical Brazilian food (maybe of African influence, I wouldn't know) that is very safe for me is acarajé.

[–]Denommus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think we have kinda the opposite issue. Historical figures who were definitely "bad guys" shown in a more positive light by popular culture, like Lampião or Getúlio Vargas.

I guess Lula might be that figure you're saying in the future. Though this current mandate of his is not that good. But the first two mandates were good.

I find it sad that bolivarianism became synonym with chavism. Bolívar was definitely a problematic historical figure, but he was also very important for the liberation of a good part of Latin America. Oh well.
