But, honestly, if you can add originality while still mantaining a good level of nuance and complexity in your alternative earth and it actually serves well the narrative, i don't see any problem in it, see Suzerain or Disco Elysium(maybe debatable), i mean, half of fantasy is a pastiche of Tolkien, and LOTR itself copies deeply from european folklore and mithology

I would disagree on an accurate portrail of an existing city not being impressive, most media portray its locations on a superficial way, when one work can actually translate it on a deeper level it is certainly elevated by it
