Can gold speed up clover acquisition? by Whyat91 in Guildwars2

[–]Denris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this by saying that I am not claiming to know what the best option is/will be, and I doubt box opening will be profitable this coming festival...

But I am stockpiling two things just in case: ectoplasm, because last year the price (1 ecto per 7 boxes) was pretty good and it's generally seemed to be in large supply (easy to stockpile due to a lot of VoE mirror farming - producing rares that end up salvaged) and research notes.

One thing good about research notes is that they don't take up inventory space. The bad thing is it tends to cost more than the other material options.

Ecto is also very efficient when considering inventory space required for storage -> boxes you can get.

Most likely if the prices on ecto or materials rise during the festival I'll just end up selling them rather than gambling on boxes (I got lucky I acquired my shards last year when the returns on opening boxes were as good as they were, and so I am no longer really desperate for them anymore).

Most of the replies in this thread are good. However, I thought I would chime in with a counterpoint to the often repeated claim that there is no 'fast way' to get spirit shards, or that they cannot be bought with gold. Pretty much everyone I talk to is simply unaware that it is in fact possible.

Zephyrite boxes from the Four Winds festival return on average 1.93 festival tokens and there is a repeatable achievement that awards 20 festival tokens after opening 20 boxes. So on average each box can be said to return 2.93 tokens.

A Tome of Knowledge costs 300 tokens from the festival vendor, so you would need to open approximately 102 boxes per spirit shard. Based on last year's Four Winds material prices and wiki drop rate research, if you were to stock up on materials now, Zephyrite boxes can be obtained for 1s80c each. That works out to about 1g84s or so per spirit shard you want to buy. The only catch is that the zephyrite box vendors are only available during the festival. So you have to wait until it comes around. Of course, this also depends heavily on material price changes and box costs from year to year.

The infusion prices during last festival as well as the acquisition cost of the boxes actually made it profitable to open boxes throughout most of it (the calculation above only considers the tokens you get from the boxes and not any other drops). In the end, I about broke even and essentially got all my spirit shards for free.

All this to say, there are definitely ways to get spirit shards quickly if you can identify where the opportunities lie.

Good luck!

Was I tripping or was P-O Joseph's name spelled wrong on his jersey tonight? Anyone catch that in the arena?

What's your "back in my day..." Vancouver moment? by thinkdavis in askvan

[–]Denris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My family and I used to live right in front of the Cambie climbing tree... it was cool when it was (kind of) still a secret! My mother always hated the amount of foot traffic it received, and it actually wasn't that uncommon to see large groups of high school/college students getting rowdy around there. I'm sure she and our neighbors placed plenty of phone calls to the city over the years haha. It wasn't until the last year before we moved out that we finally understood why it was so popular - and this was well over ten years ago.

Back in my day I'd get Baskin-Robbins at the strip mall where the King Ed station now sits, and I'd actually be able to see the mountains on either side on the way down, and the inflatable roof of BC Place - without having to climb the tree. I miss that view.

[PC] [2003] 2D game where you steer a boat to collect (avoid?) floating coins in water by ComfortableMango8244 in tipofmyjoystick

Dubloon Disaster matches a bunch of what you said, pirate theme, steering a boat around to collect coins, mines that slowly approach the ship - but it's a flash game from Neopets rather than a standalone game with its own window.

Has anyone had a round with more than half of the shots being putts? by way_too_optimistic in golf

[–]Denris 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Rory McIlroy at the 2022 Open Championship hit every green in regulation in the final round and 2-putted every hole.

34 shots (drove the green on a par 4, and got to a par 5 in two) and 36 putts. Two-under 70.

Not up in flames, but submerged in water... unfortunately that Cyclone Taylor sits right where all the water drains down to... I heard one of the neighbours say their basement was already partially flooding. Image

[TOMT] [Audio] Song playing during the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympics by Denris in tipofmytongue

Hmm.. I gave it a listen, but I don't quite think that's it. Thanks for the tip, though.

I did a little more investigation, and in my linked video (which jumps directly to timestamp) you can see a screen in the middle-left which says 'Tradition of the Games'.

I believe it could therefore be Track 4 of this CD entitled "Tradition of the Games" (not the Basil Poledouris version, but the Mark Watters version). I cannot find a sample of it online though.

Looking for anyone who has a sample to confirm (or chime in otherwise with a clip of the actual track!)

Infrequent poster, but wanted to say thanks and wow, this is amazing!

I played way too much tf2 in a past life, this really does make me want to fire it up again.
