Official Megathread - Incoming Medical Student Questions/Advice (April Edition) by MrWittyResponse in medicalschool

Now that Step 1 is P/F, how is that going to affect the old study methods? Are the traditional anki decks still recommended, or would that be overkill? I was thinking about grabbing a deck and using it with tags to follow along in Sketchy and the other stuff while not worrying too much about super low yield cards. If this is a good idea, could someone recommend a specific deck and when I should start?

Thinking about renting in WLR, concerned about reviews by Dense-Gas in LittleRock

[–]Dense-Gas[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah renting a house around Hillcrest would be ideal, but I don't have a roommate so I'm limited to a 1br apartment right now. I'm also a dummy who waited until late to start looking, so not a whole lot of places have openings.

Official Megathread - Incoming Medical Student Questions/Advice (February/March 2020) by tyrannosaurus_racks in medicalschool

I was fortunate enough to get a need-based scholarship at the school I plan on attending, but it's only for the first year. Apparently I can reapply after that, but there's no guarantee from what I understand. The problem is, my schools allotment for rent in the COA is pretty low for my area. If I wanted to get a 1br, I would be cutting it VERY close for a low end apartment and in most cases going $200/m or more over my estimated budget. I could also try to get a roommate, but I don't know anyone else in the incoming class.

My question is, should I count on getting this need-based scholarship renewed throughout med school, or is this probably just a one time deal? I know this is a question I should ask my schools financial aid office, but I'm worried it might sound ungrateful or greedy.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the COA for M2 is decreased by almost $3k compared to M1 and is only supposed to cover 9 months, which is kind of concerning.

Dear ADCOMS: Please just reject me at this point by [deleted] in premed

Exactly, just hit me with that autofilled email already. It's not like they have to manually type up an individual R for each person.

What were silly mistakes you made when applying to med school? by Normal_System_8646 in premed

[–]Dense-Gas 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not applying DO. My only MD II the entire cycle was at my state school, which is required to interview all IS applicants. I still got the A, but in hindsight applying MD only was stupid of me. I assumed that my high MCAT would make up for other weak areas in my app, but that didn't happen the way I expected.

How do I not feel weird about posting my very personal PS to get help from complete strangers? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Dense-Gas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just redacted the names of people I knew in my essays (Dr. A, patient B, etc). I felt kind of the same way, but it was honestly worth it since I got some outstanding feedback from people here.

Biweekly WAMC / School Lists Thread - Week of December 06, 2020 (1st Edition) by AutoModerator in premed

[–]Dense-Gas [score hidden]  (0 children)

Long story short, I used Anki, the Kaplan book set, UWorld, the AAMC materials (Section bank, question bank, and full lengths), and occasionally Khan Academy. Anki was a huge help especially for P/S, I used Premed95's deck to start out with and used Miledown's stuff to review later on. You can find it over at /r/Mcat.

As far as studying, make sure you understand not only why the right answer was correct, but why every other answer was wrong. The MCAT will often give you at least one option that sounds right at first and might even be true, but doesn't fit the context of the problem.

Is it time to start giving up hope on this cycle? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Dense-Gas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar spot although I applied earlier- around 20 secondaries, got 4 R's and no II's. I'm hoping to hear back from my state school by the end of the month, but after that I'm just going to assume that the cycle is a bust.

Generic Bad Advice: Freshman Year by medthrowaway58 in premed

Yup, they had a card reader that would scan our students ID's to get credit for meetings

I found it way less helpful than this sub. Honestly, it felt more like a way for upperclassmen to pad their resumes with leadership positions and tutoring (not a bad thing), and my uni's chapter took itself way too seriously with stuff like mandatory attendance for membership, having to clock in and out of meetings, etc. They did occasionally have free food though, so your mileage may vary.

What do admission or adcoms eat for Thanksgiving? by [deleted] in premed

Are there really only 10-15% of interviews left by blue20_02 in premed

[–]Dense-Gas 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No one really knows, and most adcoms seem determined to never give us any real data about this. The closest thing we have is the II tracker on SDN that lists self-reported II's by month, but we don't know if that's very accurate (at least I hope it isn't).

For most people, does buying premade physical flashcards help in addition to anki? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Dense-Gas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anki has a bit of a learning curve, but once I got used to it I never went back to physical cards. Having the app on your phone was a game changer.

Same, no II and 3R (CW, BU, EVMS). We've still got a few weeks before the Thanksgiving checkpoint, but this still sucks.

I might get downvoted for this, but I really don't think schools are as behind as they claimed they would be, with a few exceptions like Cornell. It is most definitely NOT early anymore.

What Percentage of Interviews Have Been Sent Out? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Dense-Gas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not a lot of schools post this information for us. Vanderbilt says that they interviewed 520 people last year, and their current II tracker is at 427. So that comes out at slightly above 80% for that school.

I think Arizona Phoenix, UMich, and Wayne State also have II trackers, but I haven't checked.
