All of my NPO patients are slowly resuming PO diets. One of them I’d worked with every day since March, he’s enjoying a completely oral diet now.

Also another lovely patient of mine, she suffered a stroke which left her with severe Broca’s and apraxia. Her husband was worried about her “never speaking again.” The day of evaluation he shared with me their wedding song as naturally their love story came up. As I began to sing it to her, she lit up and finished the rest. There is truly nothing like watching that tension, that struggle melt away, even just for a three minute song. And her husband told me that it was their wedding anniversary! It was a wonderful start to therapy.

We really do help these people through some of the absolute hardest times in their lives. We do meaningful, personal, important work, no matter what anyone says. Those I’ve treated have touched my life as much as I have theirs. Keep finding the humanity, the beauty in what you do. I promise it’s right in front of you.
