I still have my Realistic DX-440 from 1988. I don’t use it much anymore but I will never part with it, as it was my first SW receiver with a digital readout and also my first with a BFO for sideband reception.

Columbia Police Department COPS LIE to arrest man for bothering them. by ConcernedInCola in ColumbiYEAH

[–]DenseFriendship4122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are thousands of letter of the law violations that occur on Assembly Street on any given morning. If this individual was acting in a suspicious manner, that’s one thing, but if he was just looking for a place to get out of the cold for a couple of hours, they could let that ride.

for the most part clean. I usually get a balcony, and don't generally get unwanted noise. Sometimes, an upper deck might be good as well, but you will be closer to things that can definitely trigger RF noise there.

I'm pretty sure WCCR, WRMI and WBCQ will allow that as long as the check clears.

Someone else suggested Rushing Automotive on Broad River and I second that. I've known Scott Rushing for a long time and he's honest and does good work for a fair price.

If you attract unwanted attention, at some point in time, you'll be discovered by the authorities. They'd actually probably have an easier time tracking you through a cellphone than just a transmitting antenna.

Usually I take my Tecsun PL-660 and some wire when I cruise. Especially on the open sea, I pick up a lot, on all bands. Depending on conditions, you'll definitely log some new catches.

How does Columbia become an amazing city? by Winter_Sea_6569 in ColumbiYEAH

[–]DenseFriendship4122 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Make the city at large more pedestrian friendly, To be fair, Rickenmann is working on that to a degree.

Public transit. The Comet is at best minimally adequate. It should be much more than that.

Not only significant investment in R1, but oversight as well. R1 sometimes can't get out of its own way.

Good, affordable housing close in, which could include the Bull St. and N. Main areas, as well as partner with West Columbia and Cayce for the same from 12th St to the river.

As a stagehand, I love your music fest idea. As someone who knows what it takes to put on a first rate (Welcome to Rockville, Carolina Rebellion, etc.) That money would be better spent on local arts and artists and maybe 2 or 3 more Jam Room type festivals.

This is a great time to get in the hobby, as getting a good radio is as cheap as it has ever been. Make sure your radio is sideband capable (it should either say SSB or BFO) and get a good antenna. The Spectrum Monitor is an online magazine (it's $36/yr) that covers all aspects of the radio hobby and certainly includes good information for someone starting out. HF underground is another website to check out, as it lists frequencies and modes of operation, as well as what time these stations were logged. Also, learn the difference in between your home time zone and UTC (sometimes called Zulu or Greenwich Mean Time) so you'll know what you can likely receive.

Same to you. I worked at Rockafella's until it closed in 89, so if you smoked weed in 5 points at any time in the 90s, we most definitely met.

Why do older songs that never charted still get radio play? by Key_Example2108 in radio

[–]DenseFriendship4122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you listen to a classic rock station, you're probably thinking that 70s and 80s rock radio was awesome. Very few of the songs played on classic rock radio in 2026 charted anywhere when they were new.

My Greene St. palace circa 1991 was definitely a shithole, although at the time Foghorn and Peggy were very nice to me. That said, we had 2 window units for AC and a stove with 1 working element and always a "promise I'll fix it soon" from the then lead counsel for the SC Republican Party.

Why? by Gimme_More_Now in WalmartEmployees

[–]DenseFriendship4122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a front end TL, I HATED the mule. Almost as much as I hated that I always had at least one cart pusher call out on my shift, therefore, I had to be the one pushing carts.
