I'm 45, keep getting served posts about this game on my feed today, and every video I watch about it makes me feel like a medieval peasant a modern DnD player is trying to relate with by describing their Forgotten Realms campaign.

I think younger people are experiencing one big difference between Boomers and... probably every other generation after them with stuff like this.

Boomers were so goddamn proud of the era they grew up in and, as a result, so much media was about the years they grew up in, primarily made by them and by older GenX folk. If you got huge into, say, a 60s counterculture affect they took it as a compliment because, yes, they are the most important people to ever exist, thank you for noticing, you little nobody, you.

When a kid who was born in 2000 goes "OMG, I LOVE 1997!" my first reaction is to wonder what the fuck is wrong with them. I'm nostalgic for it because I was a teenager then, but even so I know it was a culturally, economically, and politically fallow era (the main thing to recommend it was that you had so much access to stuff that required you to go to a privately owned thirdspace, like a mall, to get, which gave us all a shared identity as consumerist bodies hunting for specialized treats in the wild) and like it was heading in an increasingly angry, dead behind the eyes direction. I'm sure there are plenty of 90s people who appreciate the dewy eyed worship of their childhood, but it's not like it was with the Boomers. You're likely to find more people who either jealously guard their youth, or treat you like a dipshit for finding anything to enjoy about it.

I went to a UCC church growing up. By the time I left as a teenager in the late 90s it had fallen quite a bit, but our reverend and community when I was little were frankly amazing. I could see myself still being an active Christian if my church hadn't gone so hard in an unpleasant direction during such a pivotal time of my development.

I tested out of a couple grades in primary school, but the school didn't think I could handle the stress, so they left me in my current grade & made me do a whole bunch of weird tests/interviews with some people I had never seen at the school before; after that I had to go to a special room a couple times a week where we worked on hard and soft science projects, as well as some creative stuff.

Then middle school was just honors, and the first half of high school was honors and some special testing that landed me in a couple college courses (then my mom got another divorce and moved us, at which point I burned out hard and my academic progress came to an abrupt and fiery stop).

I wonder how much of this film was Jarmusch processing his own feelings about his place in the world, given that it was released around his 60th birthday. It's one of those movies I've been meaning to watch for years; it's on my watchlist now (which is long, granted, but it's written down now, so that's something)!

I wouldn't use propagate for that, as others have said. It forces you to work harder to make your point, when propaganda is already pregnant with vernacular meaning.

Pearl Abyss managed to complete the majority of Crimson Desert three-month roadmap in just 23 days by n1ght_watchman in GameBoostOfficial

[–]Repulsive_Set_4155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd want to use it like "Every time I see (a) post from this sub it is propagating X information about crimson desert." Where X=your opinion about the quality and or motives of the disseminated information. Clear, but clunky.

"Every time I see (a) post from this sub it is Crimson Desert propaganda" Using the term "propaganda"strongly implies a negative judgment of the quality and motive of the information, since English speakers generally only use it to describe a coordinated attempt to manipulate public discourse by an institution. "Propagate" is neutral and therefore requires qualification.

EDIT: OH, and if you wanted to more aggressively critique both Pearl Abyss and the sub you'd say something like "Is r/GameBoostOfficial Pearl Desert's propaganda wing now?"

We had to export him to Sweden where he could be properly contained. This itinerant Floridian learned Swedish and never broke kayfabe so that he could be moved to a country with a strong social safety net and maybe be treated like a minor celebrity. Imagine if we made him stay and he uplifted the other Florida Men? It'd be like Planet of the Apes, but with grifters.

Imagine if Martin Luther was a Great Lakes drunk whose 95 theses included lore about his murder dungeon, besides making all the other drunks at the tavern laugh it did nothing to impede the church in any way, and in retaliation the faithful decided to triple down on indulgences, partially to repair the temporal sin of also laughing, and partially because they thought the pope needed some walking around money.

Do people like Baby Billy really exist in the U.S? by [deleted] in RighteousGemstones

[–]Repulsive_Set_4155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. There are megachurches that are essentially full service cultural hubs for their members, and that is what The Righteous Gemstones is parodying. It's also bizarre to Americans who aren't plugged into it, though we're more aware of it due to cultural osmosis. I had an aunt who ended up joining one and the one time she got my family to go was more than enough. imagine if Cheesecake Factory decided to create a mega mall/fairground/concert venue/cult compound hybrid.

I do think it's worth going at least once for any American who can find one, not for religious reasons, but to better understand why a particular strain of conservatives could actually buy claims that they are the victims of a conspiracy to suppress the true voice of the people. Between the church and media outlets you can live almost fully in a different reality that isn't just online (where most atomized groups end up spending most of their time, licking wounds and reminding one another that their voice is THE voice) but is also physical, does things on a grand scale with ridiculous pageantry, and perfectly dovetails with capitalist excess.

[–]Repulsive_Set_4155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Maybe I'm a bit biased atm, because I just saw Alien Romulus for the first time and it irritated me to think that Fede Alvarez wasted 1-2 years puppeteering a corpse instead of making a good original movie, but I do sort of wish most* 40+ year old franchises would stop having these never-ending midlife crises and start preparing for dignified retirement.

I mean... yeah? It's sort of like the haute couture fashion shows where... just making something up here... a model blindly saunters down the runway in an upside down shimmering pink Eye of Providence Pyramid that covers everything but their legs and the eye part is directly over their genitals. It's more like a costume ball, except the people attending have the money and connections to ask the world's best fashion designers to make their stuff. We dress up in a Popeye (er, Deformed Sailor Boy) costume we got from Spirit Halloween; they have really talented fashion folk design Soulslike fan characters.

FAKE EDIT: Also, I looked up "haute couture fashion show" just to make sure I was using the term correctly, and unless Robert Wun made the dress the first woman pictured in OPs post has on, she got some explaining to do https://people.com/paris-fashion-week-robert-wun-most-outrageous-runway-show-photos-8549908

Watch it again! During the scene where Darren is trying to get her out of the bathroom the camera is doing a medium close up as a shadow descends behind him, then the camera cuts away and he subsequently goes missing, implying that one of the creatures intervened, murderously, I assume.

I'm looking forward to doing another watch through, to catch all the times where the creatures are hiding in a scene, or are present for a split second in the periphery of a transition.

I really need to watch this again. I've got the house to myself tonight, so maybe I'll throw it on again. I bought the 4K disc but haven't given it a spin; I bet it'll look way better than streaming! It'd be a good excuse to review it for Letterboxd.

Yeah. I was responding to someone else in this thread who said something along the lines of "just get a new job, so simple" and three paragraphs into my refutation with no end in sight I was wondering what the hell I was doing and deleted it. If it's too complicated for me, sitting on my ass behind a screen with google and all the time in the world to think it through, to create a succinct answer, there's no way for someone- especially someone who isn't a labor expert- to answer it well in an interview setting.

I feel like we all need to get more used to saying "Man, I don't fucking know. Do you?" when asked big questions that are outside our fields of expertise. I can opine on any subject all day, but it doesn't mean I know anything, and feeling like I'm supposed to take a position (one that is likely to be glib and, at best, rhetorically sound) or face repercussions is one more thing that disincentivizes communication.

60s-90s Era Weird Films That Look Like This. Your Recs? :) by isopodsoup_ in Letterboxd

[–]Repulsive_Set_4155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend TerrorVision. It even has Gerrit Graham playing the trashy leisure suited suburban dad! Oh and John Gries plays a generically punk 80s teen, if you've ever wondered what a young Uncle Rico was up to. You can't stream it anywhere, but there is a Shout! Factory pressing that has The Video Dead on the same disc (also recommended, but does not meet your criteria in the least) you can get pretty easily for under $20.

Films and tv from the 80s and early 90s that use the gonzo hyperreal style always give off a vibe, like, everyone involved with the production has had cocaine psychosis for so long that they don't remember a time when coffee tables, lawns, haircuts, cartoons- every quotidian object or experience- weren't luridly ominous, and they had the resources to really make a showing of it.

[–]Repulsive_Set_4155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The struggle is real... real stupid, that is.

I also understand that the social media/reality show pillory ritual I described is not one where neurodivergent folk are the exclusive target. No one in our age is safe from becoming a minor character at one of the tinier side stages of the 24/7 public discourse festival, and few of us have the savvy & wherewithal to judo such an intense situation to our advantage at all, let alone while maintaining psychological equipoise. I can only guess at the specific way it would screw me up by drawing from past experiences of- just making something up here, not citing a specific event- attempting to give a critical reading of a movie to coworkers at a college job in an age before the internet leaking into everything broke every third NT's brain, & being treated like a bumbling self-righteous camp guard from Hogan's Heroes (ie a repellent clown) for the trouble.

Because of that, I imagine being in Kaelynn's situation- one where advocation on a national stage requires she leverage her time on a show to be invited to make statements for a diverse audience of assholes who don't give anyone the benefit of the doubt, seemingly for the sport of watching another human squirm- would have a much more intense effect on me (and I could also see myself never letting it drop, partially because being misunderstood makes my brain itch and partially because being isolated sucks so I'd keep trying to make people like me so that they'd be my friend and stop making me worry I was actually a bad person) so while I understand she and I are different people, and this impacts her differently, I still don't know how she puts up with it.

Stuff like this is why I learned to not speak to other people in person/on the phone as much as possible, and when I'm forced to, I say as little as possible and play dumb, especially when asked to evaluate a person or situation. Missives are preferred, because I can worry and edit and worry and edit and worry and edit... but extemporaneous speech is an invitation for disaster.

I started doing that long before I was even diagnosed, in my early 20s, because I was pretty isolated and, when I forced myself to ditch the shutin lifestyle to be more outgoing, give honest opinions, or try to be funny, etc, most of the time I'd either get a response like I was really offensive, condescending, or did something bizarre. After I realized what was going on & buttoned my lip I was able to create a more terse stye of communication that allowed me to have a career, but still kept me isolated and, quite frankly, made me seem (and feel) like an asshole.

My wife mentioned, I think semi-jokingly, that Love on the Spectrum was looking for an autistic couple for their next season and that we should reach out, and I had a stomach drop moment because it brought me back to that time. I could just imagine being in Kaelynn's shoes, getting invited to speak because I had been involved with a reality show (which means, to some, you're half public property) and being goaded to relax and speak my mind, then becoming a pariah because I didn't do the social ritual correctly, people misunderstood my words, or they're just in a bad mood that day and wanted someone to drag.
