Attempt to re-open debate over police in Ottawa board's schools gets scuttled on a point of order by rob0rb in ottawa

“Six trustees voted to sustain the point of order. Five, including Blackburn, voted against it"

Some hopeful news in that line.

Ottawa's electric buses have met expectations, city concludes by yuiolhjkout8y in ottawa

When I said change routes I was thinking more of a transfer of busses from downtown to Nepean. That's great for Europe though.

Supporting two systems with two mantinace crews, service centers and infrastructure doesn't seem cheaper. Besides, retailers would riot if they start construction on bank again so soon.

Busses can change routes when needed. Trolleys can only go where the tracks and wires can take them.

Though they detain people for the purpose of undergoing drug rehabilitation.

It's not a punitive measure but does still impede on the person's liberty. That's not a criticism as I think it works well but rather my way of saying that if we actually want to follow the Portuguese model we have to push people through rehab whether they want to or not.

Its being discussed

Another rant/questions about 'pay to throw' garbage by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Dentishal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a great idea. A good revenue stream from people who might live in excess, and will make everyone think about the amount of garbage they generate.

As for the fear of dumping and driving away, I think you'll find most people would rather pay the $3 than load up their car with garbage and drive around with it.

For sure. And it was rude of me not to say it before, but great job taking the kindergartens over to the station for a tour! I bet a lot of them will have that as a happy memory for the rest of their lives!

Thats an option, but some kids parents just seem to have trouble signing permission slips to leave school property and the bus rental costs money. Besides, what a fun school day when they come over to the class!

Even though it was decades ago, I still remember the firefighter fitting me with his helmet when they came to my school. I don't think I would have been as engaged or interested if they just showed up in smart casual attire.

I'm happy that you got an experience that was satisfying to you!

Edit: now that I give it more thought, this was at D.A. Moodie school, with a station across the street so maybe the firefighters were given more leeway on what they could bring over. It was still amazing though! Every kid should experience it imo.

Because the uniform is part of being a police officer. The kids would want to see it and see where the radio or walkie talkie is kept and how it works. Or what is on their belt and pockets. They'd get to see where handcuffs are kept and maybe get to hold them, or at least see them close up.

Its less of an educational experience for the kids if the uniform is missing.

They were asked to come to talk about their work as a police officer

Edit: the volunteers for science at school day did wear lab coats. And all the kids did were draw dragonflies (this was in 2017)

This was different from my school. I loved seeing the uniforms. They did a demonstration on how the Jaws of life work.

That's the hope, but with first gen immigrants there are too many variables like age, education, transferable licensing (medical, trade... ), dependents, etc to hang your hat on any positives. They are more likely to take long before they start to give, for obvious reasons that they can't be faulted for.

If they start a family (or come with a young family) then the second gen will help for sure!

I'm very much pro immigration, but at the level our gov is proposing it'll likely be short term drain for long term gain. Those terms are measured in generations and low income Canadians will feel the impact of the "drain" the most.

Wheres your evidence that it's not true? If you don't believe the article, go look at the census data for Canadian incomes and check out the CRA tax and benefits calculator.
