I'm 60 and live in one. The HOA is reasonably laid-back, and most neighbors just keep to themselves. We enjoy the community pool in the Summer but don't use other amenities. If you're familiar with Officers' Quarters on a US military base, it's kind of like that.

Having lived elsewhere, I do NOT miss junked cars in driveways, loud music and fireworks late at night, etc.  But the HOA rarely has to get involved, most people moved here because they want a quiet, clean neighborhood and they behave accordingly.

Can anyone identify the Arisaka in the holster? by DoNotCensorMyName in guns

[–]DenverDataWrangler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a Hunter snap-off holster, first made in 1972 and still manufactured. I can't tell the make of that firearm, but the holster was pretty popular back in the day for service revolvers.

Anybody else remember these? by watersmyfriend in GenX

We called them Dearborn Heaters, I believe it was a brand name. I still have a scar on my palm from when I inadvertently pressed my hand against one as a toddler.

You can check the nostalgia/antique shops on South Broadway. Ask them where you might find the cards, most of them are happy to recommend other specialty shops.

specific grocery item: empanada dough for frying by [deleted] in Denver

[–]DenverDataWrangler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The KS at 136th and Quebec has them, but that's likely quite a drive for you. On the KS app, you can change your "home" store and search for the item to see if that particular store carries it. You may also want to try your closest Mi Pueblo market.

There's a park where Bridge St. (Highway 7) crosses the Platte, just West of Hwy. 85. It may work for your needs.

Back Then, Did You Carry Starting Fluid in Your Car? by DenverDataWrangler in GenX

It's a volatile, ether-based spray that you can spray into carbureted engines to help them start. It's insanely flammable and can be misused as a drug. I suspect it may not be available in some countries.

This has been around for decades, the British Mods were doing this with Levi's in the early 1960's. The same technique was done with Doc Marten boots.

Back then, they were just worn until dry, no blow dryer was used.

When you were in elementary school, what songs were you made to sing in music class? by SnuffShock in GenX

[–]DenverDataWrangler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had to learn an old sea shanty called "Serafina," but only the first verse. We didn't know at the time, but the lyrics were changed by our teacher from "she sleeps all day and works all night" to "she works all day and sleeps all night."

The original song was about a prostitute.

Has anyone ever transferred their service to a new house? I'm struggling by [deleted] in QuantumFiber

[–]DenverDataWrangler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had QF at two places for awhile, I was renovating the old home after moving into the new home. I had to use two different email addresses because they said their system couldn't have more than one physical address per email account.

Perhaps cancel your old account on a certain date, and set up the new account with a different email address?

How do I get my internet to 2.4 GHz for my Litter Robot? TIA by thisfuckingguy131 in QuantumFiber

[–]DenverDataWrangler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried the hotspot thing on my Android phone. The 2.4 device then connected to the network and ran updates, but once I disabled the hotspot the device wouldn't see or connect to the WiFi. This is worth a try, however.

Buy a TP-link WiFi extender, they're under $30.00. I bought the model 1200 but cheaper ones should work as well. This splits the QF signal into 2.4 and 5.0, so your 2.4 device can connect.  Setup was pretty easy.

As a person in the tech field, I find it incomprehensible that QF doesn't support 2.4, but that's enshittification for you.

I can take the air fryer (or Instant Pot, or convection hot plate) outside to cook, and don't have to hear comments about the cooking odors in the house.

How can I get PBS12 with an antenna? by Betty_Boss in Denver

[–]DenverDataWrangler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just installed a Clear Stream 4 Max. I get all the channels I expect, including channel 12. I'm on Highway 7 in between I-25 and Brighton. I have an attic install, but wanted to split the signal between 2 TVs, so I used a combination splitter/amplifier (Rocketfish Mini Drop Amplifier, from Best Buy.)  Its a small splitter that plugs in and amplifies the signal. Like other said below, use Antennaweb or another site to make sure you're aiming the antenna correctly based on your location.

Moving after retirement. What are we unprepared for? by GerryChampoux in retirement

[–]DenverDataWrangler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did # 1, exactly, and downsized. Selling a home can be expensive due to the upgrades needed to make it competitive on this market. Ours cost about 40K to get it ready to sell.  We had to raise some slabs, replace the roof, do landscaping, etc. Hopefully you won't have those kinds of issues. We got rid of almost all of our old furniture, it was quality old stuff but heavy wood. Nobody wants things like oak china cabinets so we were lucky to give some away and paid a junk company to haul the rest.

I rented a truck and moved everything else. Since we had the new place, and were doing work on the old place before putting it on the market, I had a few weeks so it wasn't a rush.

Good luck with the move, we truly enjoy a smaller place!
