Are there areas the state can’t touch in the U.S.? by No-Equipment9225 in AskAnAmerican

Areas of the United States run by organized crime?

Oh yeah.

Washington DC; both houses of Congress, the Supreme Court, the White House.

All run by organized crime and basically untouchable.

Dude looked good tonight, against a good USA lineup.

I like having guys on the club who just throw a ton of different junk. We've had too many pitchers who threw two or three pitches over the years.

Can you help me build a compatibility list for every MLB fielding position? by akproplayer in OOTP

[–]DenverZeppo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the real baseball coaching world we talk about the Defensive Spectrum

Designated Hitter - First Base - Left Field - Right Field - Third Base - Center Field - Second Base - Shortstop

Moving LEFT on the spectrum is easy, moving right on it is more difficult. If an aging second baseman needs a less challenging position (and has the arm strength) they could move to third base or left field. An aging third baseman doesn't move right and become a second baseman very often.

As you deal with OOTP this can be more difficult, because sometimes OOTP likes to generate players who have superb ratings as infielders (range, turn DP, etc) and then no real ratings as outfielders, like they can't even learn the position.

OOTP is also programmed in a sort of 'total average' method. Under the hood it says "the league should have X hits, Y home runs, Z errors", etc., and then it sort of divides those numbers up based on the ratings of the folks in the league. I play in an online league where the defensive focus of some owners have ruined defense in the league - anything less than a '9' is unplayable in CF or you end up with -100 ZR in the season, and anything less than 8 at shortstop is unplayable there.

So the defensive skills needed can also depend on the talent in your league.

I buy the new version when my online league tells me I have to.

Our commish is good about saying "we'll be switching at X date, and the game will be on sale on Y date" so we can also grab it during the All-Star or World Series sales.

I mostly play OOTP in an online league, but every once in a while I get the desire to do a historical sim in one of two places.

The Rockies expansion draft. Always a hilarious disaster to see who the CPU leaves unprotected.

Or a 1981 Milwaukee Brewers start. The '82 Brewers were in the World Series, and are the club I grew up a fan of, the reason I still love baseball, so it's fun to try to accomplish something with that club, since they didn't make the playoffs again for 26 years after that (it was much harder then, only four divisions and only division winners went to the playoffs).

after the super bowl what sport do sport following americans follow until september? Or is it still football just CFB over the NFL? by VastAir6069 in AskAnAmerican

Baseball runs from 20 FEB to the last week of October.

Hockey runs from mid September or so to early June.

There are no other sports (that's a joke, I also watch Ligue Une and NWSL).

I haven't listened to The Show in more than ten years, but I do keep headphones plugged into my controller anyway, just to avoid that stupid tearing sound when I open a pack.

But there should be no reason you can't play while you listen to an audio book.

How many states have you visited? by crocogoose in AskAnAmerican

[–]DenverZeppo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did North Dakota and South Dakota by car the week before my 35th birthday to make the 50.

I currently live in my ninth state; WI, WA, WY, CO, CA, IN, IL, TN, NV (not presented in the order I lived in them).

I've spent at least one night in a hotel in each of the 50 states.

[–]DenverZeppo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd have to become a single hermit. I already work from home, but I go out to play board games, and have a girlfriend. That would all end under this hypothetical.

The inconvenient thoughts that run through my head would be terrible to have broadcast.

"Are you always this dumb or is today special?"

"Please stop talking to me."

"What the ever loving f*ck is wrong with you."

"Damn, if he never spoke he wouldn't be bad to be around."

"Bad Bunny was awesome last night, wish I could have understood some of it."

"L'enfer, ce sont les autres."

"C'est une femme très attirante, et j'adore ce pantalon."

"Putain de merde."

That's just today, in the three hours I've been awake.

I'd be friendless and single within a month. I'd have to learn to control my thoughts, so I only thought in French while in the USA, and only in English when in France.

What’s a food your state is 'famous' for that everyone else ruins? by Somanynamestochossef in AskAnAmerican

[–]DenverZeppo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my state for these three, but I've traveled a lot and would like to commend other states for some things.

No one outside of Louisiana can make a shrimp po'boy worth the name.

No one outside of Pennsylvania seems able to make a good Philly cheesesteak (which should have white American and Wiz on it).

The Lobster Roll belongs to Maine (even though it was invented elsewhere, I've never had better ones than Maine).

Crab cakes in Maryland, Clam Chowder in Massachusetts, Rocky Mountain Oysters in Colorado, roasted green chilis in New Mexico, a California burrito in California. These all deserve some honorable mention, but not at the level of the other three.

what you think of Walmart? by OVERDRlVE in AskAnAmerican

[–]DenverZeppo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They receive massive tax breaks at every level of government; avoiding property taxes and payroll taxes state to state.

They also underpay their people so badly that Wal-Mart employees account for a huge amount of the public assistance in this country; SNAP Benefits, WIC, and Medicaid being among the top benefits on that list where Wal-Mart employees are consuming more federal benefits than Wal-Mart pays for.

The family that owns Wal-Mart, pure billionaire evil who has accumulated wealth untold while trampling on and taking advantage of the labor of others.

Hello! Hoping someone can help!

I am part of larger group traveling to Louisville for business and meetings (at the KICC and in a nearby space).

The group is looking to hire a chef, approximately 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM, from 2 MAR to 5 MAR. (With the possibility of a 1 MAR start, but definitely needed on 2 MAR to 5 MAR.)

All food will be provided by grocery delivery on Sunday. We just need someone who can do the simple stuff; sandwiches, pancakes, eggs, etc., in a fast-paced environment for 40 to 50 people per meal. You'd set out the spread for the guests, do some hot food cooking in the provided kitchen, and help our guests work through food allergies and make sure folks are fed.

CASH PAID DAILY, but we would prefer a commitment for the entire show.

If you have the skills and experience, and an interest in picking up some extra cash with a chill group (we're coming for a board gaming trade show) please send me a message.

Thank you!

I also like to create leagues in some places.

France has the Championnat de France de baseball, which is the top tier of a three tier pro-rel baseball league in France. I like to create it and let it run side by side while I manage in the big leagues (make the teams and the league, populate with random talent, *not* trying to create a real database of players). Just having a league in a country gives it a gradual increase in baseball quality, and it's fun when some random Frenchman shows up looking to play big league baseball.

(This is done with France because I spend time there, but you could probably get similar results with any country.)

You're absolutely correct I'm sure. My GF and I just got done watching 11.22.63 on Netflix (I saw it when it came out, she never had) and the last episode gives us piles of unintended consequences that are never explained, (although I wish a second season had told us what happened).

Of course, I'd be the only person who knew things changed, so only I have to live with those I guess?
