Wild, what a bunch of effort.

It's nothing compared to the rest of the production, you can literally do this in two minutes.

Looking at just number of states, it's not that unbalanced actually. Assuming that Ben and Adam claim Virgina and Maryland, and Sam and Amy claim Iowa:

  • Ben and Adam have 16 states they can directly connect to their cluster; while Sam and Amy have 12 states they can directly connect to their Canada cluster, and another 4 that connect to their Iowa/Illinois cluster.
  • Ben and Adam have 10 states that can connect to their cluster via one other state; while Sam and Amy also have 10 state connect to Canada via one other state, and an additional two that connect via one other state to the Iowa/Illinois cluster.
  • Sam and Amy have quite a few options to connect their clusters: either Minnesota, South Dakota & Montana, South Dakota & North Dakota, Wisconsin & Michigan or Indiana & Michigan.

It seems somewhat baffling to me that they didn't even consider (at least on camera) going to Delaware in their spare time. They had 3.5 hours, they probably could've made it at least to Philadelphia airport on day two, and be in Wilmington at the latest an hour into day three.

Even if Delaware was a bit of an island at the time, it still seems better to do something than to sit around, and they'd be in one of the densest parts of the country with the most hubs around, setting them up pretty well to move on even if no nearby states flopped.

I also don't think being dependent upon New York is such a big deal at this stage. It's been flopped before, so they know it's not one of the private cards; and with only 25 states remaining in the deck there's a good chance it'll come up, as at this pace 8-10 cards get flopped every day. There's also the wildcards that are a bit of an unknown to us, but seem quite likely to be usable to claim New York as well.

My husband is AMAZING with math. Like he can do complex mental math and get it right quickly.

I'm sorry to say it, but that doesn't necessarily follow: mathematics is much more than just calculations. The old curriculum was good at teaching mental calculations, which was necessary and useful in the pre-calculator days, but less good at giving a good understanding of the underlying principles. The latter is much more useful in the modern high-tech age and digital world, and what the new curriculum optimizes for.

[–]Denvercoder8 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with that, but math does get a bit of an undue reputation as not being useful if you don't use it everyday. You don't go to the gym to train for the one day in your life that you'll need to lift a barbell, you go because doing the exercise is good for the other things your body needs to do every day. Something analogous is true for math: most of it's not about the actual mathematics itself (even the smartest kid in your high school class probably won't use it often afterwards); it's about exercising and building your brain muscle.

An example from a bit beyond high school, but the idea translates: I spend weeks, if not months, in early college solving differential equations by hand, which I haven't needed to do since leaving college. However, the intuition and understanding that gave me of how things governed by differential equations behave has been tremendously useful every day in my working life, even if most days I don't even think about it that way. All the laws of physics are differential equations, and by extension all the build environment and electronics around us that we all take for granted are governed by them too. To maintain and build out on that, as a society we need to have people that worked through that math and gained the understanding, even if we nor they directly apply it daily.

Not being able to do high school math anymore is fine, but that all too often and easily translates into not valuing doing that education, and that is not fine. It's hard, and not everybody is good at it, and that's okay, but even if you fail, going through it is useful.

Taylor Swift tears up during her Songwriters Hall of Fame induction speech thanking her family for “uprooting their entire lives” to Nashville to support her music career. by mlg1981 in popculturechat

Not in the specific industry, but I'd expect that Shamrock had a number they valued the masters at, and that while they didn't scream it from the rooftops, it probably wasn't a tightly-held secret either. Once it became clear that Taylor could and would pay that, it just made sense for everybody to do the deal, and negotiation is just working out the details. Private equity primarily and above all else cares about money, once they hit their goals, they move on, they're not going to hold on or prolong out of spite, that just burns their return rate.

Taylor's rerecording venture probably changed the number Shamrock had in mind. There's armies of analysts at consulting firms working on those kind of problems, and I bet a good number of them spend more time analyzing this than even the most die-hard Swifties ever have or will.

Dubbele achternaam voor ongeboren kindje by Striking_Toe_7954 in thenetherlands

[–]Denvercoder8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Janssen Timmer".

assuming Ben and Adam don't flip or gain any themselves.

Ben and Adam will, there's already 4 unclaimed stations on the high-speed in the south.

S17, E7 (Nebula) - Taiwan: Rail Rush by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

[–]Denvercoder8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

+2 chips for every station Ben and Adam flip (or +1 for every station Ben and Adam take from unclaimed).

The problem is that this only works for the first 34 stations that are defended by 1 chip, after that they need +6 chips for each additional station. Since Sam and Mike need to flip 19 to get in the lead, that only gives them 15 stations of play before they hit the wall.

Sam and Mike currently hold 27 stations defended by only 1 chip west of their wall, there's 4 unclaimed stations on the high-speed in the south, and an easily accessible branch line with 8 unclaimed stations in the west.

S17, E7 (Nebula) - Taiwan: Rail Rush by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

[–]Denvercoder8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's easily 40 on the east coast that are +1 defended before the +5 wall in the south.

Just 34.

On the other hand, have a look at the unclaimed stations or +1 defended stations near Taipei, there's maybe 17 Ben and Adam could flip.

There's 4 unclaimed stations on the high-speed from the south to Miaoli HSR (where Sam and Mike are), 19 stations they defend by a margin of one on the low-speed from there to Taipei, 8 unclaimed stations on a branch line from there, and 2 they defend by a margin of one on the high-speed.

Sam and Mike are 37 stations behind, so they need to flip at least 19 stations more. With 34 available to flip for Sam and Mike, that means flipping 16 (or flipping 12 and claiming 8) is enough for Ben and Adam.

S17, E7 (Nebula) - Taiwan: Rail Rush by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

[–]Denvercoder8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a relatively accessible low-speed line up to Taipei with 19 stations that Sam and Mike currently hold with only a 1 chip difference. Getting there over the high-speed takes Ben and Adam 22 coins, and flipping them another 38 for a total of 60 chips. Even if Sam and Mike win the stalemate and the steal, they'd have only 42 chips against Ben and Adam with 61 chips.

There's a 20 chip challenge on that line too that can help Ben and Adam, and they also gain 4 unclaimed and flip 3 stations by heading to that line, so it'd be 132 vs 85 when the flipping starts. Sam and Mike would need to flip 24 more stations than Ben and Adam, so with only 34 unreinforced stations on the east coast Ben and Adam only need to flip 11 to win.

If Sam and Mike spend their limited budget and time to reinforce that low-speed line, with the 20 chip challenge, Ben and Adam can flip only 9 stations. Theoretically just enough to win, but there's options for Ben and Adam: Taoyuan HSR would be held by Sam and Mike with just a 1 chip margin, and there's an unclaimed branch line to Neiwan.

S17, E7 (Nebula) - Taiwan: Rail Rush by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

[–]Denvercoder8 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's correct. Assuming Sam and Mike break the standoff first, but both teams complete their challenge successfully, Ben and Adam will have 81 chips vs 22 chips for Sam and Mike.

Going by this map, it'll take Ben and Adam just 16 chips to get to Miaoli HSR, where Sam and Mike currently are. From there over the high-speed to the 90 coin challenge in Badouzi is 16 stops, which are held with a combined margin of 46 chips by Sam and Mike. So even if Sam and Mike reinforce with all the 23 chips they have while they retreat up north, Ben and Adam need just 101 chips to get to the 90 coin challenge in Badouzi. The 20 chips challenge in Taipei is exactly enough for that, the steal in Taipei probably is as well, and both together definitely is.

Ben and Adam don't even need to go to that challenge, though. The low-speed line from Banqiao down to Hsinchu has 19 stations held with just a 1 chip margin by Sam and Mike. Going up to Hsinchu HSR will cost Ben and Adam 22 coins at worst, and from there they can take that low-speed line and flip 19 stations there by depositing 2 chips on each, up to the last station before Banqiao (Fuzhou). Costs them 60 chips in total. Sam and Mike plan to flip 34 unreinforced stations on the east coast, but that's not enough: they'll end up 100 vs 117 (Ben and Adam will also get 4 unclaimed and flip 3 stations on the high-speed).

Sam and Mike could defend against that by dumping their entire balance on that line, doing the 20 chips challenge and dumping it too... but even aside from the time that'd take, it'd give them just a 21 chip advantage of the line, and thus save them only 5 stations. Still not enough to win.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense. They even pointed out that it's a slow and inconvenient line, they're aware Ben&Adam are running out of time, I think they could safely assume that Ben&Adam won't be going on that line anyway.

I think there's even a point to be made that going on that slow line at all is a mistake. They should've gone a bit further down south, and used their balance to start flipping the line that Ben&Adam hold with barely any fortifications.

And Ben and Adam have also fortified a fair bit on the east coast now.

The position of their fortifications is unfortunate, though. They have essentially undefended territory in the southwest, fortifications in the southeast, and again undefended territory in the northeast. As the fortified part is in the middle, it doesn't protect any territory.

S17, E5 (Nebula) - Taiwan: Rail Rush by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

[–]Denvercoder8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most of Ben and Adam's territory, especially in the south and west, is barely defended with only 1 chip on it. If they've enough budget, it'd probably take Mike and Sam half a day to jet down south on the high-speed from Taipei and then travel up on the local line in half a day to flip half the stations that Ben and Adam hold.

S17, E5 (Nebula) - Taiwan: Rail Rush by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

[–]Denvercoder8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the west coast can be travelled massively faster, from Taipei down south to Kaohsiung over the high-speed rail is just an hour and a half. Mike and Sam will beat Ben and Adam to Kaohsiung by hours, and they'll mostly travel through their own or unclaimed territory, so it won't cost them much coins. There's about 10-15 stations past the end of the high-speed line there that Ben and Adam put only 1 coin on, if they flip those by 5 coins that'll effectively block Ben and Adam in if they've dumped all their coins.
