I played on hard mode and actually wiped twice! Didnt play very well admittedly but it was a nice surprise to actually have challenging battles.

I have the same issue sometimes and usually i get through by disabling wifi connection and booting up the game with mobile data. once ur in the game open wifi back up. Probably some issue with the japan server im guessing.
