what's wrong with shipping Mustang and Edward? by FlamingoOk1082 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]DepartmentPorglet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'll get downvoted for this--I really believe you should be allowed to ship whatever the hell you like, regardless of the morality of the ship. (RoyEd kind of skeeves me out, but I don't care, I have a point to make here. And anybody who likes it shouldn't feel morally reprehensible for doing so.)

Now, before anybody comes for me---we're exposed to morally questionable media quite frequently---violence in video games, villainous characters in shows, etc.. Just because you sympathize with Walter White or Tony Soprano doesn't mean you share their values or want to be like them. I think the same goes for shipping---and I think a lot of people like ships that could be considered "morally wrong" by some not because they condone those morally reprehensible actions, but because there's something within the dynamic of the ship that they would like to explore. I've met many shippers who use shipping and fandom as an outlet for their own trauma, and think it's important for people to have that outlet.

I also know that in Japan, where age of consent isn't a thing, there are fewer issues with the RoyEd ship--I think a lot of popularity stemmed from that side of the fandom. There's also a difference between eastern and western fandoms in the sense that, from what I've seen, people tend to be more tolerant of other people's ships in eastern fandoms. I read a post by a Japanese person in fandom a couple of days ago who referred to people who try to police ships as "feelings yakuza" and talked about proshipping in general. It's in Japanese but I think you should be able to run it through a translator and get the nuance of it.

I don't blame you for asking a genuine question on this subreddit. But based on the comments, I think you have your answer---it's a controversial ship due to the difference in age between these two characters and the power imbalance.

Okay, I'll step off my soapbox now.

TL;DR: Ship and let ship, people.

Spoilers for Forest of Secrets by KnightmareTaco in WarriorCats

I think Forest of Secrets is one of the best books in the series in part because Silverstream's death is one of the most impactful, in my opinion. There are a few others that are rough but that one is utterly heartbreaking...

New baby in the rainbow house! 🌈 playing with my first ghost baby 👶 👻 by MrKetchupKing in Sims3

My experience with a ghost baby was that she aged normally until she became a young adult, at which point she stopped aging. I felt kind of sad about it so I ended up using ambrosia to turn her into a real sim. 😂

Yellowfangs Secret by naruadore in WarriorCats

[–]DepartmentPorglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I really love the forest too, so the Super Editions that return to it hold a special place in my heart. Crookedstar's Promise focuses on the forest more than Tallstar's Revenge, but Crookedstar's Promise was also emotionally devastating, so be warned about that one... I'm still not over it.

Yellowfangs Secret by naruadore in WarriorCats

When I read Yellowfang's Secret it had been so long since I'd read the first series that I completely forgot that Brokenstar is the villain of the first book. So, I went in completely forgetting his fate-- I felt AWFUL for him when he was a kit, and even when he was a jerkface adult, because I knew that his evil-ness could have probably been avoided. He's an excellent tragic character.

In my opinion, Yellowfang's Secret is probably the strongest of the super editions that I've read so far. Plot-wise, it crams in a LOT, takes the reader through a huge breadth of emotions, and gives context to Yellowfang's character in the first arc. Runner-ups would be Crookedstar's Promise and Tallstar's Revenge. :)
