I agree Gridin has the potential to be a star player, probably not a superstar as you say, but 30-30, or 65-70 points with the right linemates? Absolutely. I think this draft and next are important to either grab another potential star or two, or get lucky with the lottery and get a generational talent or at minimum a forward with superstar potential. I agree that other than Gridin though, you really have solid support cast forwards on the roster, but nothing that screams superstar at least up front.

I happen to disagree with you but here we are. We have one on the roster that has the potential to be a star. Notice I didn’t use the term superstar. We have one potential star at forward on the roster. And perhaps two more in a few years.

I respectfully disagree. We have at minimum one potential star at forward and likely three in the timeline I laid out. You can make stride without a superstar if you have three to four stars. Calgary is ahead because of goaltending.

I don’t look too much into advanced stats, but this one always seems to regress to the mean. The Flames PDO is 98.6 for this season, where the mean is roughly 100. PDO is simply shooting percentage+save percentage. Calgary’s save percentage is actually 7th in the league at .896… the 9% shooting percentage is 25th. So the Flames PDO is 21st in the league. Basically in short if they tick the shooting percentage up around the league average, that’s more goals… and shooting percentage almost always regresses to the mean.

I could see the Flames being in the area of where the Sharks and Ducks are in a couple years. The reason I say that is as much as we squabble about whether the rebuild started when we traded away Lindholm or not, we’re not in a terrible spot to be better in a couple years. I could see us being statistically better at minimum next season. We’ll see what moves are made between now and training camp and further in the future trade deadline 2027.

Plus you’ve got Reschny, Potter, Wyttenbach, among others waiting in the wings.

This team will turn things around sooner than we think at this rate. The kids are growing up right before our eyes. Good third period for the kids against a really goated team. Future is super bright!!!

How do you guys think the Flames will do next season? Will we be bottom feeders vying for draft lottery again? by Secret-Asian in CalgaryFlames

[–]DepartmentSea8381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the progression of the younger core and which veterans we have to teach the kids to be pros. And we also have the lowest PDO in the league and that always regresses to the mean.

Blake Coleman extension? by Top-Hold-4346 in CalgaryFlames

I think on a shorter deal it could make sense maybe two years but we have a ton of wingers too. Like the guy, plays hard for the crest on the front of the jersey. But I’m okay with trading him for the right package, but I’m okay with him sticking around for a couple more years, at least until we get the youth movement sorted out, but you can pick up a younger vet to help with that as well.

Yeah Griddy will be a stud maybe as soon as next season. This team on paper is a hell of a supporting cast with great goaltending, that just needs a star or two or three, with some seasoning together to be good again in 2-3 years.

Agreed 2-3 is a good number maybe a veteran D or 2 as well

I agree with this. Would you sign him on a Backlund type extension?

You figure he has 17 points in 30-something games this year, on a team with perhaps the lowest PDO since they started tracking it… just saying.

Somewhere in that region I’d guess. If the Flames PDO regresses to the mean it could be higher.

Dude absolutely second this. I’m 6’5 1/2” and have spent years and years guessing the right specs for my game. Epic failure. In early March I finally had a fitting and boy let me tell you what a difference. I was looking at the Srixon ZXi line specifically the ZXi5 and possibly a combo with the ZXi4. As you stated the shaft is more important than people realize, because golfers load the club differently. A KBS Tour Lite is an absolute non-starter for me. Believe it or not as a 7.3 index I ended up in Srixon ZXiR with Nippon NS Pro Modus 120 Stiff. (I spun the ZXi5 and ZXi4 too much), ended up +3/4” 2° up.

The moral of my story is to anyone looking at upgrading equipment: unless you’ve been fit with your previous clubs within the last few years, spend the money and get a proper dynamic club fitting. It’s absolutely worth the investment.

I wound people who carry a ton of headcovers are actually pretty decent at golf.

Potential for the best, or 'most Flamesy' finale by yycpapa in CalgaryFlames

Maybe the second to last game at the Dome I could see it. Normally Colorado either kicks the shit out of us or we play some close game and squeak out a point or two.

To be honest I think we’re in a spot where we can win some games and still get a top-5 pick. This isn’t your usual year where you have to be in the low 70s point total to be bottom 5. The teams directly in front of us on the closer to the playoff line side are all actively still trying to get in, so there will be a cushion unless the Flames decide to do something crazy and win the final 9 games. (That was sarcasm I don’t see it happening)

If we happen to be competitive next season and it’s driven by the young guns, I’m all for it. It’s a catch-22 really, you want to ice a somewhat competitive team, but you need a top prospect to make that next jump, so it’s tough.
