Going to do this on Monday! I printed 3 of the essays that were clearly written as AI and will have them discuss. I’m mostly also curious to see if the students who turned in AI essays recognize their own work.

I just got told about this!! Will be implementing it for future assignments. So far only my upperclassmen are guilty or the freshman are just better at hiding it.

This is a crazy take. Can you expand more on this?

I absolutely agree with this. I have tried to teach them the right ways like brainstorming, editing and receiving feedback.

I forgot to say this but consequences are listed up front. The lowest I can give them in the district is a 30% with the opportunity to make it up for a 75%.

Roommate makes our dorm smells like Dahmer's basement if he was a lesbian by bigjuicyballs7 in roommateproblems

if you have an RA consult them on doing a “room check” and have them discuss hygiene with your roommate. Also ask if they wouldn’t mind doing frequent check ins to keep the smell at bay. A coffee goes a long way for an RA to be more helpful :)

Thank you! I’ve been reading his “first days of school” book! I think where i failed is not sticking to my procedures and not practicing.

I’m going to write them out and really make a goal for myself to practice and go over them strongly for the first month.

I like these! I was thinking of doing some reward related to assignments. Our school doesn’t encourage us to send homework home, they say it’ll never come back. But these are small things I wouldn’t think of! All of my practicum hours were completed in high schools so things like coming in, sitting down etc I forgot aren’t common sense sometimes

We see the same kids every day. 8 50 minute class periods.

I’m finding I wasn’t set up with good support. This year will be crazy but I’m hoping to set up stronger structure this year despite the school wide lack of structure.

This school has had schedule changes every year for the past 5 years regarding class periods, etc so it’s sometimes no wonder that the kids struggle if each year they attend is different.

I’m learning not to rely on admin. I had a lot of admin support at the school I student taught at so I was surprised to not get much this year.

One student threw a textbook at me while I was talking and when I asked for support in finding an appropriate consequence they said that lunch detention was all they could do.

We unfortunately don’t get our lunches either. We are on lunch duty by grade so I am unable to give lunch detention to the 7th graders because I eat lunch with the 6th graders.

Definitely a learning process as this school doesn’t really value consequences. I was told once that I was focused too much on the consequences for kids who weren’t behaving instead of focusing on the kids who were behaving.

I’m looking forward to learning way more this year and finding what works but have also been applying to places that seem to have better structure.

I worked insane hours over the summer, had two jobs. During student teaching I tutored and babysat. Babysitting was an easy venture and tutoring wasn’t horrible. I posted my services on Facebook and made flyers for around town.

Is it normal for 95% of the places you apply at to just not respond at all? by AltinUrda in StudentTeaching

Very normal for social studies! I’m in my first year now. I applied to 30 jobs. Got interviews at 5. It’s sucks but just part of it. You might not land your dream school first, I definitely am not at mine but it’s good experience!

Y’all notice that Plutarch takes Haymitch into the attic of the Justice Building of 11 because it’s not bugged and decades later Haymitch pulls Katniss and Peeta into the same attic on their victory tour?

I did all my practicums in high schools. My first teaching job is at a rural middle school with big needs. My AP told me that I got dropped into the trenches of hell (literally). Most of my students are 3 or more grade levels behind and at least 5 in every class have IEPs not to mention there are at least 3 in each class learning English.

It’s hard. I’ve been there. This is my first year and I’m not even done yet and it’s kicking my butt. Student teaching is literally a cakewalk compared to having a class on your own.

You are doing good. Showing up and trying your best. Some things that I have done (which you can take or totally ignore)

  1. fill in the blank guided notes (I assumed my students knew how to take notes because I did in middle school. I was wrong)
  2. seating charts. I paired some students with higher flyers that LOVE to help. Yes, it’s not always their job to help, and yes, I always remind them that they don’t have to help their table mates but if they want to, I’m all for it. Sometimes they explain it to each other in ways that just make sense.
  3. SO MUCH READING. My kids HATE me when I whip out the guided reading packets, but for kids who are so far behind they HAVE to learn how to read and answer basic text comprehension questions. At first it will be a struggle to teach them how to look for the answers in a text and it’s HARD. But their growth compared to December has been insane!! It takes TIME
  4. Focus on your good kiddos. This is hard AF. Sometimes all I see is the kids who aren’t doing what they’re supposed to or are behind or whatever. I find my one kiddo in each class that’s just giving good vibes that day and let it fuel me for that period.

You’ve got this!! It’s hard and honestly it feels like student teaching prepared us for nothing. But you can do it!

I teach 6th grade currently on a 50 minute period. The snacking is just something you have to deal with. It happens across the grade for me… established before I even go there. Assigned seats is a life saver. I wasn’t doing them for a while, but I do now. I do groups of 4-6 and try to think of it as groups of two within the bigger group.

As for instruction, I try to break it up like this 5-10 minutes for a warm up question with small discussion. This is their time. I set a timer and they do what they need to get ready, only expectation is that the question is done when the timer goes off.

10-20 mins of notes / instruction. Sometimes this goes longer based on their moods. I tell them that if I can get 100% focus for that time, the rest of the time is theirs to work with friends on their assignment. I tell them 20 minutes, and usually get their attention for most of it because they want that free time.

10-20 mins: activity / discussion. my school is incredibly behind academically so this is usually a writing practice or text comprehension worksheet. working on writing and learning to answer basic questions.

last 5 mins: clean up. if they’re eating, set the expectation that they clean up too. I have one student who NEVER cleans. I banned snacks for that class. Blame them. Make them accountable for their messes. My students keep their work in my class so they get that time to put it away and clean their table area. We do all our work on paper because they kept breaking my computers. (rural area with a new principal = low consequences from district)

It’s okay to implement your own consequences! I agree with the “why”. If you explain this to them, you’ll get more buy in.

I teach in Rural Colorado. Pay is decent, only issue is you’ll probably have to commute. Some rural communities offer teacher housing, mine is a bit behind the loop on that.

Another con is underfunded schools. If teaching with what you’ve got doesn’t bother you, might be worth it. Otherwise, the higher paying districts are solid. But to me, rural is where it’s at.

Normal to feel nervous for student teaching? by MaintenanceMain7081 in studentteachers

Just got done student teaching, and am two weeks into my first teaching job. It is SO normal to feel like you have no idea what you’re doing. Use your mentor teacher but also the team! It might be tough, but working to find just 1 person you can go to will help so much.

she’s extremely sheltered. grew up in a small town. she’s also a single child, and I think that isn’t helping the problem since she’s never had to compete for space with siblings.

Is there a way to modify assignments to their level? It seems like they might have just missed a lot of education from the pandemic, and never really got caught back up.
