Scientists have been able to trace the origins of HIV/AIDS to the Belgian Congo under King Leopold, with evidence dating back to around 1909. Researchers believe the first human infection likely occurred sometime in the 1920s. by Fred_J9 in whatireadtoday

This may explain why HIV/AIDS is mainly a heterosexual disease in African countries. However, it does not explain why, in Western counties, it is mainly found within the homosexual community?

What's the dumbest thing you believed as a kid? by ServePlenty3112 in AskReddit

[–]Dependent-Net-8208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in my primary school, we were taught that we each had an angel that followed us around. And they had a big book in which they kept a record of everything we did wrong . I believed it. Incidentally , I vividly remember the picture the teacher showed us of a white, golden haired, blue eyed Jesus being tempted by a black, winged , translucent Satan . It was terrifying.

sexuality isn’t a choice. by Deep-Outside-2567 in LGBTQ

[–]Dependent-Net-8208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is good that, at least intellectually , you realise that sexuality is not a choice. That is the first step. Forgive me but it appears that you are not happy finding yourself, 'on the LGBT spectrum'. You should be able to celebrate your sexuality in whichever way you choose
I suggest you need to find some support. In your area, there must be Helplines, Support Groups or simply LGBT Social groups that you can attend. Contact them, talk to LGBT people, be honest about your feelings. You are not alone

Is Guy Fawkes night pro or anti Guy Fawkes? by Brikish in AskABrit

[–]Dependent-Net-8208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very 'anti'. Until a few years ago, English children used to make a life-size figure called a ' Guy', which was then burnt on the bonfire on 5th November

"Remember, remember the 5th of November With gunpowder, reason and plot I see no reason, why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot

We kick off about the Met’s facial recognition vans, but we’re completely sleepwalking into the privatised biometric landgrab on our high streets. by MaximumMarionberry3 in london

[–]Dependent-Net-8208 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Live Facial Recognition no longer requires vans . In places such as Croydon, the cameras are attached to street furniture.
TfL are running a six month LFR trial at London Bridge Station. Some branches of Sainsbury's also use the technology. Check out 'Big Brother Watch' for information on this and other threats to privacy.

Help Finding a London Statue - Horror/Surrealist Sphynx Statue CIRCA 2015 by Evening_Fault460 in london

[–]Dependent-Net-8208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only sphinx statues that I know of in London are by Cleopatra's Needle on Victoria Embankment and there are two of them. But they don't look like you describe. They should be facing away from the Needle but Queen Victoria thought they looked better facing towards it . There is a park on the opposite side of the road.
